The iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch Gaming Thread 3

Anyone know why the shop in Deathsmiles is acting so crazy?

When I go into the shop it pops up a message saying "Requesting product information....." and it just sits there until I tap it. Then when I view a category, all the silver and gold items cannot be purchased, they just say "Getting item info...".

What's all that about then?

Loving the game apart from this little niggle.

Edit: Niggle solved, I just needed to complete more of the game. Odd presentation though, it looks like it's trying to connect online.

In app purchase:

HD Mode - $3.99 ????????????
Master Chief Mode - $0.99
I think that's a really cool way of doing things. Grabbed the 'base' version, will probably upgrade to HD mode if it controls well.

The game is free. Those optional extras provide a revenue stream so that, hopefully, the creators will see a penny or two for their efforts.
But...... Is the game not in iPad resolution without that purchase or something?

I'm assuming because I'm not with my iPad, but my assumption is that the free game has the standard 1994 graphics and the HD in-app purchase is for the higher res textures of the XBLA version (or something similar).

http://www.macrumors.com/2011/07/06/bungies-classic-marathon-game-now-available-on-ipad/
The iPad version of the game started off as a personal project by iOS developer Daniel Blezek but was later officially sanctioned by Bungie. The iPad version of the game is free to download, but an in game store offers two in-app purchase options. The first is called "HD Mode" for $3.99 and features new high resolution textures to replace the walls, floors and liquids. The second is Master Chief Mode for $0.99 which offers the ability to start on any level, infinite ammo, all weapons, instant recharge, invulnerability and instant save.

I think they're taking the approach of "Hey guys, here's something awesome for free, but if you wanna throw us a few bucks...."

Holy crap! I had no idea Deathsmiles was coming to the system!
Bought it as it showed up.

Now if only my iPod would arrive before the weekend. :)

Anybody wanna provide me a little banner to use from now on for the GAF's iOS Weekly Challenges?
PM it to me, otherwise I'm going with bland text :P

Prepping up, next challenge will start at 1AM (GMT) this Monday till 23:59 (GMT) of next Sunday

Also looking for someone who wants to chip in with a little gift for the winner or for the raffle (between all participants). I repeat: a LITTLE gift, meaning even a $0.99 game you'd love for others to try is ok, we're doing it for fun not for the prize, you can give away whatever you feel like to.

There are loads of people on GAF that have released apps, aren't there? If you hunt 'em down you could probably put together a little bundle of games as a prize each week.

It'll be a cool prize, and some nice free advertising for the devs, too, when the winner comes back and posts about the games in this thread

Aralon is on sale from $9.99 to $4.99 today. It's a 3D Western RPG that some people were recommending a few days ago in this thread. It's an iOS Universal app.

OfferedApp is different, you have to sign up there and complete an offer to get it free.

Yeah, looks like a scam, to me.

99 cents is cheaper than the tons of spam and possible identity theft that can come from this.

That would be pretty cool, but I don't want to "hunt them down" or put them in a position they don't want to be in.
If anyone of "them" devs (not naming names) wants to approach me and support the GAF's iOS Weekly Challenge (and, as you say, do a little good for the GAF community and, who knows, maybe even seeing a little bit of advertising in return) that'd be AWESOME. Otherwise... Last time I offered a little prize, if anybody wants to be Santa Claus this time then it's fine by me :) again, we're not expecting people to gift Real Racing Hd 2 or something, a little neat game you love will be more than fine and much appreciated!
Otherwise I'll offer the prizes myself, no problem. ^_^
Just remebers that gifting (not giveaway codes tho) is a Regional thing, so (iiirc) in my case you need to make an italian account to claim my prizes.

I can put up a strange Charging Targe for TF2 as a prize
LoL Prize

i really enjoy the Cave games but the low resolution kinda kills it for me. I have an iPod Touch 4G and an iPad 2, so either way, I'm playing a blurry mess.

Setting the screen to the smallest size and then hitting 2x on the iPad helps a little bit...

Why aren't the "story" games Universal yet?
Because they wouldn't look any better if they were? Try the demo, zoom out the main area until it's no longer blurry. There you go, instant ipad game.

It doesn't seem like that big a deal to make all games iPad/Retina ready. Just start with iPad sized resolution and scale down for all the other devices.

There are certainly enough Retina and iPad devices out there to warrant the extra work, as it would make their app more attractive to tens of millions of potential customers.

Re: iPhone 4 optimizations.

1. Increased assets tend to bump applications over download-over-3G limit. This is a psychological barrier for a lot of devs. This is also a reason for why some devs tend not to do universal apps.
2. While Apple does do a lot of the work for you as long as you provide the correct format for your art assets, there are other optimizations that need to take place dependent upon the type of app (framerate and memory being the most strictly bound).
3. iPhone 4/Retina screen penetration is not far enough along. If Apple allowed iPhone/iPod apps to scale well to iPad, I think you'd see a lot more adoption. As it stands, you have to develop with three targets in mind: legacy iPhone, retina iPhone and iPad. While, Apple does a great job of facilitating this, there are still improvements that could be made. If they could somehow fudge the retina assets to scale to iPad resolution, that would be awesome.

Edit: Unfortunately, you cannot just start with iPad resolution assets and scale down. If you want to take advantage of the frameworks that automatically handle legacy and retina displays, this leaves you to have a completely separate set of iPad assets as the resolution is different. This is assuming that the dev even has a use case that makes sense on iPad.

Technically yes, but I've yet to see a difference between FullForce + RetinaPad vs just FullForce. I think FullForce overrides it.

Also, DEATHSMILES IS LIVE!!!!! Buy buy buy! I already got it, and it's remarkable.

Oh Cave, the things you do to me.

Any Advance Wars-like games available for the iPad? I adored those games on the GBA and the controls would be perfect on a touch screen.

Man, now I'm imagining Advance Wars ported over to the iOS. Impossible, but it would be amazing.

I've never played Advance Wars (the artsyle always turned me off), but Battle for Wesnoth is very, very good. War of Eustrath has also been tossed about around here as being decent/good, but I've never played it. I had some fun with Rogue Planet as well, but never finished it.

I'd have bought Hot Springs Story for a dollar a week ago, but now it's all about Pocket Academy so no sale
What? They're different games. I actually like Hot Springs better.

Cloud saving too, via email address & PIN. Handy for switching between phone/pad.

Great Little War Game lacks the art-style charm and polish of Advance Wars, but the mechanics are very similar and it's fun to play.

Transformers G1 Awakening works as well, but the campaign is short.

Yeah I appreciate that, but they're similar things and Pocket Academy appeals to me more. I'm not in any rush to play either, though, so the sale doesn't grab me.

Grand Prix Story would appeal even more than that if it was out.

Jailbreak it, retina pad. Blickow.

I feel like this gets asked at least once per page. Come on Intelligent Systems, look at all the people eager to pay for a clone of your game.
