The Last Guardian PS4 vs PS4 Pro Graphics Comparison + Frame-Rate Test

you're happy to play something at a really horrible frame rate, as long as the image quality is good? that's really strange.

i'm glad it's a stable 30fps at 1080p. anything below 30fps and games become a shit show.

25fps is horrible these days? Guess what, it's fine for me. It's fine for most of the people.

If the game drops below 10fps, that is a shit show and unplayable, like some of the bosses in SotC. Anything above 15 is playable.

Awesome, I paid for my PS4 years ago and now I feel like I have to upgrade my consoles after only three years just to get acceptable performance on new titles.

Well, if we have time, I'm sure the original GAF thread still exists. Might be worth checking out.

I do remember it being slammed for performance but, at the same time, it was 2005. Things were pretty different and the game was attempting visual effects that were beyond what one would expect on PS2. It was cutting edge for the platform but they went too far.
I don't know if I want to. ;) In SOTC, there were many times where you were just running around or climbing/traversing basic things (not even colossi) where it dropped to 20fps, similar to what we're seeing in TLG. Those scenes are not cutting edge. Anyway, perhaps history, in the case of Team ICO, simply repeats itself. I'm just happy that we at last have it instead of what we all feared many times over the years: cancellation.

This is really disappointing to me, as an OG PS4 owner. You have to wait for better hardware to play these games? I mean this is originally a PS3 game, and it looks like it. Now you're telling me I have to buy a better PS4 to have a decent experience with it?

That's a shame, I was looking forward to checking this game out. I'll get it eventually but I have enough to play now, hopefully they can put out a performance patch. Kinda doubt it though given its develpoment history, and considering how SotC and Ico were, I think fans of the games won't mind the framerate that much

Wow that framerate is just shit on base PS4. I can only assume the perfect 30fps reveal trailer from 2015 was just as bullshit as the PS3 footage we got in 2009. I really can't even. A virtual PS3 remaster can't hold 30fps. It can't even hold 30fps on the Pro.

That's a really disappointing result. I had the idea of playing this with pristine supersampled image quality on an eventual Pro purchase. Now that's literally impossible.

It really doesn't look like a PS3 game. It really doesn't!

Don't be so dramatic. It's not a PS3 remaster. There's nothing on PS3 that approaches how this game looks.

Also that video in 2015 had hitching.

Any jif image quality comparison?? can't watch the video right now. pls

Graphical diferences between base ps4 and pro 1080?

Oof, looks rough but definitely manageable on the base model looking back at SotC on PS2 and how that ran.

The game probably was never finished on PS3 before development was shifted over, but one has to wonder even with downgrades in mind just how it would have ran on PS3 compared to what we got.

Grats to the PS4 Pro folks tho, the game looks absolutely gorgeous and I hope it's every bit as good as it looks.

As a Pro owner with a 1080p display I am very happy to play it with a locked framerate. Thank god I'm not forced to downsampling. Which I love, but not with a inferior framerate.

But that should be a toggle in the game menu. Why is Sony so afraid of letting people chose what they want in the game in this regard?

I always loved that they let us chose dubs and subtitles independently in the menu. Something many developer fail to deliver until today. Do that for graphical setting aswell. People are not stupid.

I definitely think they fucked up hard by not offering an Image Quality or Framerate choice for 1080p owners. 4K owners get that choice, why screw over 1080p owners for no reason?

I agree that this and the Last of Us patch set a bad precedent for Pro. I really am fairly concerned supersampling is going to be removed as a Pro feature for 1080p owners, which was the whole reason I got a Pro in the first place.

Was Dishonored 2's lack of 1080p Supersampling ever fixed? Or are we at 3 titles now where 1080p owners get the short end of the stick?

Nope, 1080p and a near flawless 30fps......thank goodness.

Is this really something to be thankful for? On the friggin Pro?

Dem textures in the DF video showed otherwise. :P I'm exaggerating...a bit...cuz it kinda is.

The 2015 trailer ran at a really smooth framerate compared to this. I'd be interested in seeing how that same sequence runs on base PS4, and hell on the Pro at 1900p too. Certainly looks more graphically complex than the scenes shown in the DF vid.

Posting on a new page.

Was this game originally a cross-developed PS2 to PS3 game, then released for PS4?
No. Entirely designed for PS3 (originally).

In a way, it's akin to ICO which started on PS1 before going to PS2.

No PS2 roots in The Last Guardian (well, maybe buried way in there but I can't imagine it at this point).

No and the game doesn't exactly run well in any mode either.

Do you think this game will get patched down the line or is it what it is?

OG PS4 performance is horrible and with PS4 Pro we once again face a scenario where the resolution the developers chose is just too high. I don't get it.

Guess I'll wait for the PS5 remaster or hope for resolution adjustment patch on Pro. Reviews are kinda intriguing despite not being interested in the game when it was revealed.

The framerate concerns had me scrambling to cancel my pre-order but it ultimately failed because Amazon shipped my copy already. Good to see the framerate is alright in 1080p mod on the PS4 Pro.

Can't watch it right now, is this like Hyrule Warriors, which was marketed as being a 3DS game but in reality you needed a n3DS to have fun with it?

Or is base PS4 still fun but with occasional stutter?

Graphical diferences between base ps4 and pro 1080?

Visually identical on PS4 or PS4 Pro at 1080, just solid 30FPS on PS4 Pro at 1080 instead of dips.

PS4 Pro in 4K mode is sharper for sure at around 1900P, performance does not stay at 30FPS but is more solid than base PS4 even in "4k" mode.

Can you play in "4k mode" downsampled in a HDTV? or doesn't give you the option?

OK then, so you want bad performance with clean image quality. Weird.

Different points of view, I understand.

I buyed PRO for supersampling. Only for this. I was in love with this console after playing Infamous, Uncharted 4, Last of us, Watch Dogs 2, Deus Ex, Ratchet in my 1080p TV.

If this is the new trend, if Sony is going to remove this feature on future titles and won't give choices to their users... this is a serious issue to me.

Now, I understand that this game is not a good example of a game with a stunning image or to be played with a higher resolution but... give choices.
Options, choices, modes to select. Power to the user.

Saw 22fps on a standard PS4 and 4K on PS4P is blurry compared to 1080p.
10 years in the making and they release it in such a state?
Not trying shit on the game, but it's weird that games are released like that and sometimes even worse yet consumers are fine with it all.

Cancelled my pre-order.
For once i'm glad the UK release date was later otherwise mine would have shipped by now.
Sony can get screwed if they think i'm buying a ps4 pro just to enjoy this game at a stable frame rate.
I'd rather have a smooth 720p option for ps4.
I'll wait until a patch to fix this mess.

Do you think this game will get patched down the line or is it what it is?
Doubt it. What else could they do at this point? I mean, really.

That's not true. Dishonored ran great on 4k TV.
Not for me. It has weird micro-stuttering issues that drive me insane. I could not keep playing at all. Was super disappointed. I tried everything to solve it (rebooting, different resolutions, different displays...just in case). It looks like bad frame pacing but doesn't even show up on our graph. I don't get it but it looks terrible to my eyes in motion. :( Be thankful you didn't notice.

Maybe it's over-generalizing, but it seems like when a dev includes supersampling and performance suffers, the pitchforks come out and players demand native 1080p.

When 1080p is the only option, the pitchforks come out and players demand supersampling, even if it would mean degraded performance.

I get it... it's about choice, but it's almost like even if you had both choices, some of you wouldn't be happy. Not for this game, anyway.

Hey is the Digital Foundry Patreon video working OK? I'm trying to download the video but it keeps erroring and saying Server Problem?

GTAV & TLOU? The thing holding a lot of PS3 games back was resolution. I think both of these games look significantly better than The Last Guardian. I guess GTAV is somewhat cheating as they made more improvements than just resolution. Hell I think GTAV looks better than a lot of current gen games.

Edit: Crysis 3 is another example.

Well if you noticed issues with Dishonored 2 I don't know how you can play ANY game on the console. Very few games run better than Dishonored 2 on pro.

Oh, I posted 26 times in that thread and my posts are horrible. Jesus. I was in pure fanboy mode at that time. 11 years ago.

I actually played the game first on a 13" CRT TV using s-video in a tiny Tokyo apartment. It was one of the worst ways to play the game but I still loved it.

Haha that thread is great.

Me from 11 years ago said:
The framerate.

OH GOD THE FRAMERATE.

What a goddamn disgrace, fucking disgusting even to be honest with you people. It feels like I'm playing a pre-alpha copy. Even when you're in a relatively simple area the bitch of a game feels like running at minus 15fps(and this is no exaggeration). Just horrible. This game must've been an unplayable mess at E3...the visual beauty of the game is nearly ruined because of this. If I had known it was this bad I would've prefered to wait a few more months for a smooth game, because this shit is just awful. God, what the fuck Ueda, what the fuck.

It really was impossible to brush over that game's awful technical state.

Well if you noticed issues with Dishonored 2 I don't know how you can play ANY game on the console. Very few games run better than Dishonored.
Well, the problem with Dishonored is specific to that game - it's not something I see most other games (except those with frame pacing issues).

Haha that thread is great.

It really was impossible to brush over that game's awful technical state.
...and then I tried to claim you were biased against the game and unfair. I was so so wrong. X_X

How the fuck is a 9 year game that got developed on upgraded hardware than what they were previously aiming for and not a stunner technically perform so shitty

Like

....

What

How do game development?

the engine is old and archaic its been in the works since ~2006 and porting it to ps4 was likely a very difficult process.

I Imagine the performance is down to legacy engine issues that arent easily fixable.

As a Pro owner with a 1080p TV, do I change my video settings on the console to 1080p or can I leave it at Automatic?

you can leave it at automatic. 1080p will be the highest setting your panel supports so the PS4, and game will just run at that.

To me it's a choice between 4k mode and 30 fps... I'll probably go with 4k mode. Performance can't bother me that much in this type of game. Can it?

Choice is good.
But a Playstation Pro should be able to do a little more than 1080p, at 30fps.
This is the whole point of the damn system.

...Yes I'm reading that shit now, lol.

You should be ashamed of your words and deeds.

Also I noticed a huge list of western names under technical advisory or whatever in the Credits. Do you think they had the western tech teams come in and try and triage this?

Not sure why they didn't opt for 900p on base PS4.

On the face of it I think this could be the right solution.

Shadow of the Colossus frame rate issues had zero impact on my enjoyment of the game, or it's playability. Perfectly willing to give The Last Guardian a pass on it.

Yep, but pixelcounters gonna count pixels. I don't care, SotC remains one of THE best games of all time and I have only ever played it on PS2.
