The Last Remnant Review Thread

I feel like I gave it a pretty strong first chance; I beat the game with every character.

Though I think I'd probably have a slightly better impression of it if I went back now, simply because I originally went into the game with certain expectations of a strong story based on other Squaresoft games of the time.

How exactly did you manage to beat the game with all seven characters if you hated it? I can't imagine investing that much time into a game I hated.

I was 15 when Saga Frontier came out and could only afford to buy a couple games each year. After finishing it, I remember thinking that beating it with all the characters was a big waste of time, but since I knew I wasn't getting another game for months I just had to hold out hope that the game would get better.

is the game still you can choose either the "Japenese-designed" character or the "American-designed" character and see two different scenarios? As was originally discussed?

Also, blood eh? havent seen that before in a jrpf

Anyone knows if there is going to be dual-audio?

After IU dubs, I'm not really expecting much from this one, so Japanese audio would be very welcomed.

If it has I'd seriously consider the 360 version. (On PC it should be quite easy to change)

But I doubt it since S-E has never done it before.

I more or less agree, although I thought that figuring out the systems was half the fun.

I think the most frustrating point of Unlimited SaGa was that you could easily play through most characters quests in 8-10 hours, but it was highly unlikely that you would be able to beat the final boss at that point. In fact it would probably take you around 25-30 hours to get all the necessary equipment and techs needed to win the fight. You were also unable to leave the final dungeons, so if you overwrote your save you were screwed.

The SaGa games have a lot of deep and creative game mechanics mired in genuinely shitty design choices. You bring up one of the most grievous, which is getting stuck in the last dungeons. Without fail, the SaGa last dungeons are past points-of-no-return, and you're allowed to save in them. The last bosses in the games tend to be so difficult that nearly half the time spent playing is 'I can fight the last boss, but I need to get stronger to stand a chance.'

Then there's the lack of story or guidance, which sometimes goes a bit too far, but I generally like. Most people despise them for it, though.

US takes about 5-6 hours to reach the last boss, if that, but it is very hard to beat any of them in less than 10 hours or so. Fifteen is normal, I'd say.

I know, and they suck because of that.

At least Mystwalker gave some use to those 4 DVDs including Japanese audio on LO.

WOW after inifinite undiscovery i was afraid S-E was headed toward cranking out b-games over and over again but this famitsu score is shocking! This may be a must buy now

Don't know if this has been pointed out already, but it's back up to $56.99 at Amazon.

Pre-order Price Guarantee

Amazon.co.uk's price for not-yet-released items sometimes changes between the time the item is listed for sale and the time it is released and dispatched. Whenever you pre-order a book, CD, video, DVD, software, or video game, the price you pay will be the lowest price offered by Amazon.co.uk between the time you placed your order and up to and including the release date. A pre-order price guarantee message will appear on your Order Summary during the checkout process. If you use 1-Click ordering, pre-order price guarantee protection will be automatically applied.

Doesn't that apply for Amazon.com as well? You get charged the lowest price since you pre-ordered it?

Yes. If you pre-ordered before they raised the price (even if it was when the game was originally 59.99) you will get the 39.96 price.

Ah cool. I made my pre-order at the £34.99 price, and was worried they would change the price back to £45 within this week and get charged full price.

that said, um... i didn't even think of what was game of the show.... i was so crushed by the AVERAGE! ;)

um yeah... erm... the Space Invaders Ext for XBLA was the best game at TGS! ;)
actually, watching people play that homebrew broomstick game - THAT was gots!
It took me a while to get your meaning, truth be told. TGS 08 was my first so, well, you know how your first is. But even with how mediocre it may have been, TLR was GotS 5 times over and a pumpkin pie from your mom.

I can see this game being the type that has great music but lack in the gameplay department. this game might develop its own little cult following/defense force.

iono i think it might be reversed, since i thought the music from the trailers wasn't that memorable and the story and characters could get annoying, especially that high pitched frog thing that follows you. i'll bet people may really get addicted to the combat

They were blinded by the Tri-Ace.
Kawazu can do no wrong.
You can hate them all you want, but spewing BS that isn't true? Come on, that's a new low. tri-Ace had nothing to do with Rogue Galaxy. That's all Level 5.

I was disappointed with I.U. The game felt very flat IMO and I didn't like the character designs. More so I enjoy the mature look in Last Remnant and the combat looks more appealing to me; the IU combat felt too mushy.

I really hope this game delivers, I'll be watching this thread for more reviews.

Oh shit, you're right. Sorry!
Was there a tri-Ace game released around the same time as Rogue Galaxy and that's what I am confusing it?
I do hate both Level 5 and tri-Ace, though. That might be it.

i dunno man, i'm just gonna have to disagree on this one.

Also, EGM didn't review this this month.... ? Any reason?

Probably too busy. They didn't even review a high-profile title like Resistance 2.

Looks like a game fun to play with totally boring and uninspired design/story to me. So I don't know, I must ask myself what I want most in a game, but I don't wanna choose :lol

I'd like reviews to stop being OMG'd by games lacking in either department, though.

Now down to £32.87 if you'd waited on other sites. I need to put some cash in the bank so I can get this, methinks. Gamestation will probably be charging the usual £40 in-store. But I want it on day one :(

Wow that's a great site, thanks. I'm going to use it more often.

I'll wait until next week around tuesday or so to see if it has hit £30 somewhere else, I can always cancel Amazon's before they ship it. And I'm not too bothered on getting it they 1, since I'm working during the weekend and won't have time to play anyway.

I do hate both Level 5 and tri-Ace, though. That might be it.

Radiata Stories - Jan 2005 ---> Rogue Galaxy - Dec 2005 (oh, look, just like WKC <.<) ----> Valkyrie Profile: Silmeria - June 2006.

Make your pick

There was nothing wrong with Infinite Undiscovery. Besides, not only was it a Tri-Ace title, but it was also relatively good quality taken for what it was. Undiscovery's main problem was the voice acting. It broke willful suspension of disbelief it was so bad. I found myself appreciating the game more when I muted the sound and just read the sub-titles. The base game is on par with anything Tri-Ace has provided in the past, and they are definitely an A-Game team.

You weren't a fan of the Shadow Hearts games, were you?

Not exactly the same thing. In games like Shadow Hearts or Lost Odyssey, the timed button presses were predictable and turn-based so you could get into a combat rhythm. In this game, they are random. That means you need to be paying attention the whole time.
