The least satisfying guns in first person shooters

Every gun from every Call of Duty game.

Nuh-uh

"It is so OP but" completely destroyed any notion of balance the Halo franchise had.

It is rare to pick it up though, so there's that. For the most part, Halo is pretty balanced; the best player will always win. The Binary Rifle only has 4 shots I believe with 2 shots before reload, so it isn't that OP when you consider a Rocket Launcher with 4 shots has massive splash damage.

Also, the assault rifle in Halo 4 is actually really strong. If they made it a cross map killing weapon like in CoD, the game would be broken. I'd like some skill in my Halo.

Damn near every gun in CoD4 and beyond. The weapons in the WWII games actually sounded decent and had some kick to them.

The Plasma Pistol from Halo. Sure, you could charge it up, but it felt so underwhelming.

Haha yeah until you're facing down a tank and he's all like "Wait what the fuck why did I stop moving SHIT IS THAT A PLASMA GRENADE FFFFFF"

then it goes from 'unsatisfying' to 'I just killed a tank with this baller ass gun'

Well which Halo game are you referring to? It felt great in the original, and decently powerful, but in Halo 2 and 3 it was so weak. Reach and Halo 4 powered it up a bit to fall in the middle.

Halo 2 forever changed the series from a primarily up close and personal game into a game of long distance rifles, and pistols forever since lost their original power.

While not remotely the worst gun in an FPS the SMG in Half-Life 2 sticks out because in retrospect I realise it single-handedly dragged down my opinion of all the game's weapons on my first playthrough, of the "traditional" guns the Shotgun, Magnum, Crossbow and Combine AR are all satisfying in their own ways, but the SMG is really weak and the standard ammo provision seems to railroad you into using it all the time.

I gained a lot more appreciation for HL2's gunplay after I went out of my way to avoid using the SMG, and it helps that the pseudo-adaptive ammo system means that the game actually mostly supports that style of play.

Standard pistol (ammo) on Rage, takes dozens of shots to put someone down on nightmare, might as well not be there.

Assault Rifle in the original Halo felt like it was shooting bubbles.

It was pretty weak but the combination of high rate of fire, muzzle flash, and SFX made it VERY damn satisfying. So much so that I opted to use it instead of the others weapons the majority of time.
Pretty sad how much they F'ed it up in later games...

That's not the pistol's fault actually.

I'd Software had the genius idea of making the weapons LESS accurate on higher difficulties. Like the shotgun (with it's godly sound design) is almost completely useless.
Seriously a dumb fucking decision and why I've never played the game on anything higher than normal.

Interesting, didn't know that. Finally finished it recently on nightmare but my god, those 10 hours felt like 100.

The sniper rifle in Unreal Tournament.

Ripper and arguably Bio Rifle were the only weak guns in that one. Enforcer was saved by Akimbo, and every other gun just had so much 'oomph' to it.

I'll go with the majority of the BL2 weapons too, especially Bandit. The legendary Bandit weapons blow, even when they should ostensibly be pretty freaking awesome. Filling a room with a Madhous clip on a Gaige with Close Enough should be all kinds of amazing, but instead of it's a depressing huge waste of ammo.

Everything from every Killzone, everything from every IW CoD(sorry, guns don't sound or act like that, yes I used to go shooting with my dad), everything from pre-Reach Halo, and almost everything on the Source engine.

Garrys mod has some real gems though.

Is there some kind of most-satisfying guns thread I've missed? Because I really do want to talk about what makes for a good FPS gun.

Half-Life 2 had shit guns.

Ugh, yes. Half-Life 2 had some of the worst guns for any critically acclaimed shooter I've ever seen.

A mixed bag, I would say.
The pistol was terrible. The smg mediocre.
Shotgun, crossbow and magnum were good.

Bioshock. Now *that* is a game with shit guns.

They do lots of damage.

The crossbow sticks people into walls. The shotgun sounds good when reloading, the magnum when firing. "Do lots of damage" does not, I think, a good gun make.

The Shotgun in the new Tomb Raider.

Weakest piece of shit, Shotgun I've ever used. Motherfuckers tanking rounds to the chest like nothing happened.

About half the weapons from Halo 3. And that probably had to do with the shitty feedback from it and alot of the secondary guns weren't really balanced.

Whatever they did to the dual wield skorpion from mw1? I think in bops? I get the sequence messed up but basically as the skorps went, so did the whole franchise... red tiger skorps meant at least something... hopefully not that you were a camper either

Every single Halo ever apart from Halo 4. It's always been a sore point in the series. I hate how they always sounded like pea shooters. Halo 4 added bass to them and gave them a bit more if a kick.

I generally don't touch FPSes, but I played a lot of GoldenEye and Perfect Dark back in the day, and I distinctly remember GoldenEye's Klobb being an incredibly underwhelming, unsatisfying gun.

All the guns in COD Black Ops Declassified are the absolute worst. No contest. Anyone who has ever played it, knows. And I really mean all the guns in the game are the worst, because they all feel the same. They feel like nothing. The sounds, the weight, the damage ... are these really guns? I can't tell.

I was thinking about this a while ago and nothing is worse than the smg in HL2 for me. Still love the game though.

Like how in the hell was Mass Effect overlooked in this thread

How in the hell

Probably because Mass Effect is an action rpg and not a first person shooter.

The more I think about it, I think most FPS games on the source engine have a pretty unsatisfying feel to a lot of their weapons, yet I still love the games.

The starting Assault Rifle in Unreal Tournament 2003/2004.

They replaced the awesome Enforcer pistols in UT99, and they were AWFUL. Horribly inaccurate and super weak. The only good thing about them were the grenades. You'd want to either immediately switch to the Shield Gun or pick up a better weapon.

I don't remember what I was originally going to post in this thread because I just realized how much I hate this stupid gun. At least they brought back the enforcer in UT3.
