The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass new video

Calidor said:
of course, the touchscreen while applied to games like Ouendan, Kirby CC, etc is perfect. But on Zelda it just doesn't work.. like Amirox said you are not even controlling Link, just draggim him.
So there is a second guy somewhere in the video playing the game with a gamepad and the guy with the stylus is just pretending?

I better take my exit from this thread now...

Listen, I respect your opinion... and others. But I love Zelda how it is, not with ridiculous butterfly fairy dragging touchscreen controls. Sorry if you can't understand or appreciate that, sorry if you expect me to live on the fumes of faith. My faith hasn't brought me very far with any developer ever, so I'll just continue on being critical and enjoying the pleasant surprises that come along with it. Videogames aren't serious business, but nonetheless there are certain things I don't like and certain things I do.

Anyway, I hate for this to be a big ol' thread of negativity, but we're commenting on a video and I believe I responded how I feel. There are plenty of other DS games I am anticipating, without having to resort to unfun touch screen controls.

Note also that I have never used the word 'gimmick' in this thread.

So, what, do you write the word 'win' during the final battle to beat the game? I didn't know you use the stylus for everything, including movement. Is this completely no-button gameplay? Will this be my first Zelda I miss out on?

The game really does look nice, with the obvious exception of the control method. But I'll definitely give it a try, since there's apparently no other way to play it.

^ Skinnyrattler, it's true. Stylus use or nothing.

I like how you KNOW the controls aren't doing anything better even without playing the game or knowing about all of the control input methods and applications. It's a really open minded mentality. My bad.

I'm not saying one can't be skeptical, I even said that addng traditional controls as an option won't hurt, but I think a lot of people, like yourself (no amir0x even) are just blowing it out of proportion. Given nintendo's track record with the franchise, one would think you'd have a little more faith in them. Instead of going with the knee-jerk reaction route.

If it's different then it's bad for the franchise!
Instead of pushing the D-Pad to walk, I drag a butterfly and he follows. Instead of tapping a button to attack, I tap the enemy. Instead of holding down the B button to twirl attack, I draw a circle. Etc, etc, etc. I know you think I'm hating, but really, what am I missing? All of that is just different methods of performing the same shit.

And it's not about different being bad, it's about me not wanting different because it sounds lame. It's different for different's sake. It doesn't matter how good Nintendo is if it's forced. And that's how I feel. And considering Zelda is not only my favorite Nintendo franchise, but one of my favorites in general, I think this stinks. I just want Zelda the way I like it.

Heh. Touche.

And just for the record, I myself am not too afraid of the Wii version. Was just mentioning it before the haters did. :)

While you portrait the touchscreen to have a larger degree of indirection, you are forgetting that your analog stick isn't exactly link himself either. If you picture the touchscreen as a very, very flat analogue stick, this should become clear. The concept is the same with the exception that the touchscreen can also handle "go here" type of inputs. Zelda DOES NOT use this. The touchscreen functions as an analogue stick, basically, with link remaining in the center.

I'm gonna try a different approach to this mess now.

I loved what I saw apart from the dungeon graphics and am looking forward to a fresh zelda game for once. While minish cap was awesome, it did feel a little stale at times so I very much appreciate the change. I especially like how fast you can traverse the world which fixes what I disliked about OoT.

Actually, it would be better if it controlled like Diablo, and you clicked to the destination instead of dragging Link there.

i think a shiny 'small key' counts as phat lewt, Dragona

That ain't phat lewt. It's a ****ing key.

But seriously. This is ****ing DIABLO now. Remember what they said about that? OH YEAH:

CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK

Why couldn't the artstyles/stories be reversed between this and TP? Then I'd have a Zelda game to properly look forward to. Sigh.

Oh, I see and respect that XD

I just don't think there is cause for the alarm and negativity here. I mean the impressions were generally positive, you'd expect some people to calm down with the hyperbole, and at least wait to try it out before deciding that it's bad for them.

It might sound or look awkward, but is that reason to think Nintendo is screwing up the franchise or the game?

I'm expecting more people to have faith because Zelda games have always excelled in the controls department. I think that's reason enough to give this the benefit of a doubt.

Wait, you CAN'T do that?

Jesus **** Nintendo.

Wouldn't it be awesome if the final surprise, Dragona, was that once you beat TP you unlock the ability to play it cel-shaded Wind Waker style? :D

The stylus controls are HOT. Like a hot knife thru butter, seriously. The game was the highlight of E3 for me. It absolutely works well. EVERYTHING is done on the stylus. Just wait until the first time you use the boomerang by drawing its flight pattern....too awesome. Just think, something as complex as a Zelda title and they have got it ALL working with just the stylus...that is awesome. **** the haters until you actually play it.

That would be balls to the wall awesome.

I really take some perverse joy in the agony some of you go through at the idea of touch screen controls. What's next? Anime without underage panty shots? Is there nothing left to live for?!

Listen, I also want to add that I understand the apprehension that is filling this thread. When I first sat down to play the game at E3 and realized that I was not actually directly controlling Link I was disgusted. I almost walked away from the DS right then. But I stuck with it, and was rewarded. It just works beautifully. If someone explained to me the way it works, I would laugh and call them a tard for even suggesting something so stupid. In practice however, it feels second nature. And you always feel as if you have direct control over Link.

Wouldn't it be more awesome if Nintendo relegated the WW graphics engine for spin off series like Zelda: Brain Training? And was developed by N-space? :) :)

If Nintendo is going to make games like this that are so much different than their traditional forms, why can't they just make them NEW IP'S?

I'll say it again, the control scheme is very similar to an analogue stick. If you have a gamepad attached to your computer, just go to the control panel and look at the configuration dialog. It maps the analogue stick movement into a square and even has a little * character which would be where navy is in zelda. The PH controls are not more indirect. It only looks that way because of the top down perspective.

For a better example, just look at Rayman DS which even has an analogue stick image on the touchscreen to make it clear.

EDIT: I watched the video again, and link doesn't stay in the middle. So I guess that would mean the virtual analogue stick moves with him..

Whoa. After all the whining I heard about the controls, I thought they vid would be clunky and unaccurate. But it was all perfect and smooth! Link went in a straight line wherever he was supposed to go, he killed the enemies and did everything without screwing up ONCE.
What's wrong with you people?

They will not understand it until they play it.

Oh, and Dragona, we will never convince the unwashed masses that the WW art style was one of the greatest artistic and technical achievements in the history of gaming. They all just play Madden. It's easier to think of it this way. It just hurts less.

only in "the americas" - Reggie. LOL

anyway, yeah, i hope it includes a 2nd control option. its good to have a choice, but i like the touchscreen controls. they seem easy. my only worrie is when you want to move AND attack, for example at a boss fight. i dont want to stop to attack.

Amir0x said:

Yes it was. Mainly because it wasn't top down like this (and because the virtual stick wasn't where the player is, not even on the same screen).

Well, hey, maybe I will end up enjoying Zelda: The Dragging Butterfly Fairy Adventure at the end... who knows! I just don't think so.

Well, there's still the GC version of TP for you. :D
Damn straight man, I can't wait. Yet I'm so scared of when it will end. It'll be almost like the series (traditional style) swan song. I'ma be in tears throughout the entire game, and wake up at 2AM screaming 'LINK DON'T LEAVE ME!'.

Tis to be both a joyous and yet heartbreaking moment.

If there really isnt going to be an option between playing with the dpad and using the touchscreen then I'd be very pissed off. I cant see why they cant give us the option, it will only make the game more accessible and people will be able to choose the control scheme they are most comfortable with.

I think you would and therefor would say to give it a chance. :)

i will of course play a demo when it comes... that much, is free! But yeah, judging by the amount of touchscreen controls that don't suck (1 game), I will say it's going to be very very difficult for this to succeed.

First impressions can be a bitch. If I hadn't spent the three minutes it took to get comfortable with the control scheme I wouldn't have realized how awesome it is.

Im not saying that its rubbish, but why not give people the option of how to control the game when its easy to do so? Im glad that Nintendo are trying to come up with new ways to control a game, but Im not to happy that they're willing to not give the gamers the option of using the dpad when its very possible to do so.

I really don't enjoy using a stylus on shit, so having its as a requirement to play an entire game (especially like Zelda).. doesn't seem so appealing to me. Hopefully it will be an opition for basic button controls.
