The Mariana Trench Sure is Deep

Early buzz is that it's a vanity project and he holds back on the footage of the actual fucking trench.

It's a shame, because I know he shot tons of footage when he hit the bottom. The documentary focuses primarily on how "awesome" he is for attempting to do something so dangerous and the problems he ran into before launch.

I am convinced there are things down there beyond human comprehension...and beasts that we could only see in our nightmares.

So the movie is gonna be like this?

Someone has to raise the bar

lol

So he's like the real life Steve Zissou.

What did it end up being? I read everything from some anti-submarine thing from WW2 to a natural rock formation?

According to a Reddit thread a month ago linking newpaper articles, it was only this

Edit , source of image is the DM. Reddit thread is here

This is actually pretty cool looking.

That particular gif made me think these are fake. I'm pretty sure nothing living like that exists on this planet but I have to say that I haven't quite explored the whole planet yet so I won't say I'm 100% sure.

Can someone explain something to me?
I understand that we can't send submarines down there because of the intense pressure. But why can't we send a drone that is completely water proof, and fill it completely with water? Even fill in water where the electronics are because we can make it water proof. So wouldn't filling it completely with water then balance out the pressure or something since there's no 'gap' for the water trying to fill in?

Submarines don't work that way.
If you fill it completely with water then the Submarine will never float and hence you cannot manoeuvre it since it will just sink to the bottom like a rock. Submarines need tanks that can be flooded and emptied with water at will so as to control their depth.

Another fun fact:

The Pacific Ocean is larger than the combined land surface of the Earth.

Any scientific reasons why deep sea creatures look so ugly and frightening?

Scientific I don't know about, but I do know that they are creatures from another planet that have crossed over to our dimension through a wormhole? in the deep depths of the ocean. You think those are scary? Wait till the others come!

That's a good question though, I do wonder why they are so scary looking. They really do look like monsters from some other planet.

All this circle-jerking over Cameron is kinda weird when Jacques Piccard and Don Walsh made the same descent in 1960. Thats 52 years before Cameron.

Yeah, but it doesn't make Cameron's solo-dive any less impressive. No government in the world funds expeditions like Cameron's anymore, so for him to independently fund the research, development and do the dive solo before dedicating the sub, findings etc to scientific institutes on his own dime is pretty badass.

And again, that somebody like Cameron is willing to put their own money towards these projects is more than rare these days. He's a genuine explorer and pioneer. Dude trained with the Russians to go into space (and stay in the ISS) back in the day until the launch date was cancelled. He served on the Mars council and came extremely close to getting NASA to mount 3D cameras on the last Mars rover to set up a (delayed broadcast) stream for select cinemas worldwide. He still talks about wanting to go to Mars. He's one of the founders and backers of Planetary Resources - the company founded to start mining near-earth asteroids.

It's just inspiring that one man is capable of so much and actively pursues these interests, rather than just talking about them.

so where is cameron descent video on youtube?
I think the US government is censoring something during the 1960 and current descent. Is the sperm whale really the largest animal deep down there? I dont think so..

We've already established that it's Cthulhu >.>

Those gifs are the closest we'll get to seeing organic "alien" life.

I've always thought that there would be some sort of weird gas type creature on an gas giant type planet somewhere and it would be bizarre. Now that I think about it, that isn't really much more bizarre than a jelly fish. It's most water, floats around(some actively swim), and just looks like a bag of nothing.

Yeah he shot tons of footage of nothing. There's really not much going on down there.
