The Mask (Jim Carrey)

I actually find the Mask scenes unfunny now, while it is the unmasked scenes that still get laughs.

I didn't even find them funny back then but I appreciated the homage they were to old looneytoons. Reminded me of Roger Rabbit.

I really liked the movie, I should rewatch.

Why the hell didn't anyone post that by now?

Loved this movie as a kid. I saw it a few years ago and it's still good.
And the soundtrack is great, I have for years "Hey Pachuco !" on my mp3 player.

Yup, one of my biggest movie crushes. I was shocked at the difference in her between this and Something About Mary. I think the haircut, lipstick and potential weight loss are what made her look so different. She's naturally beautiful, but she was a vision of perfection in this.

i am also pretty sure she wore a ton a padding and such to make her look more voluptuous.

I remember my mum helping me make a Mask for myself with cardboard, pens and an elastic band

I remember wanting to watch the movie with friends on my birthday, so I asked my father to get the DVD on his way home from work.

He brought me this

I watched and rewinded that part with Cameron Diaz in the red dress so much that I wore out my VHS copy of the movie.

I remember knowing that the mask was the only movie I ever thought Cameron Diaz was hot in, seeing these gifs i think i need to watch it again.

The OP is thinking too much about the logic of the story. The movie is supposed to be a live action version of an Tex Avery cartoon.

I watched a few months a go and still found it great.

I still like the movie, it has lots of Tex Avery references and it's mindless fun

OP doesn't like the sets but to me they look like old Hollywood sets in studio, i like that vibe

I remember several times during the 90s when it would say MASK in the TV guide, and me and my siblings would park ourselves infront of the television expecting Jim Carrey, but most of the time getting this instead.

I never saw The Mask, but it's been coming up relatively frequently for a dead IP around me. It sounds like it doesn't hold up, but I might have to watch it out of curiosity. Or read the comics. Those seem pretty interesting, even if they're a bit more... Um... eviscerating.

yeah it was one of those movies i watched over and over as a kid. i never understood any of the plot points, just that jim carrey said funny things and danced around a lot.

my favorite(?) part of the movie is when Dorian throws the glass and says "SON... OF A... BITCH!!!" and then it goes back to the music.

im sure it would be awful to watch now.

and yeah, Diaz never looked as good as that movie afterwards.

I was a huge Jim Carrey fanboy in my preteen years and even I thought The Mask was hot garbage.

Ace Ventura I watched every day though. ^_^

To me it's just a fun movie. Nothing groundbreaking or Oscar-worthy, but it's a fun live action Tex Avery cartoon starring a man possibly made out of rubber and cartoon magic himself at his peak.

Im guessing the bump of this thread was on the wake of the "old cgi that still holds up" thread, wasn't it? cause, damn, the CGI still holds up in this!

+1 for the "Cameron Diaz made me feel funny but I was too young to understand why" crowd.

Like when we used to climb the rope in gym class!

Man, The Mask. Used to love it but I haven't seen it for years, going to have to track it down and watch it now.

Yea it's definitely not as good as I remembered when I saw it as a kid, but Cameron Diaz was just as insanely gorgeous as I remembered so at least there's that.

One of my favourite JC movies alongside Ace Ventura. I haven't watched it in over five years, but I do remember not finding it as funny.

I still don't understand what happened to her after this movie, she never looked even closely as good as in the Mark later on. Did someone told her that you need to lose some weight or something?
Yep. She looks really good in this movie but it's a big exception.

Doesn't help that she's also one of the most obnoxious "actresses" out there

Loved the movie as a kid.
It is pretty much a live action cartoon though some of the scenes kinda caught me off guard when I re-watched the movie.
Like the scene were one of the henchmen bleeds to death on a chair while getting a smoke.
Just before this scene The Mask is just dancing with Cameron Diaz and we suddenly transition to THAT?

She cut her hair. Simple as that.

I don't think it was that. She had longer hair in other roles and appearances.

This is weird... I can't quite put my finger on why she is obviously still the same actress, but she was just such a fox in The Mask. I guess it was the right combo of hair, weight, make-up, lighting, and performance. She's far more "wide-eyed" and "adorable" outside of this movie, while in the film she's a smoldering, steely-eyed femme fatale.
