The Metal Thread |OT2| All Riffs, No Gifs

I saw Alcest live last night. I'm not a huge fan, but they were pretty good. "Les Iris" was the standout.

Hey metalgaf, was wondering if you could help me out with something. Whenever people ask what my band is like, or what sort of music we play, I always struggle to come up with an answer. I just find it difficult to categorise music into specific genres.

So, if you wouldn't mind helping me out, please take a quick listen and let me know (a) what genre you would define us as and (b) if you can think of any well known bands we might sound similar too. Much appreciated!

Saw Symphony X and Overkill last week. I'm not a super fan of either band, but they were both fun to see live. The venue was really loud which made me buy ear plugs ASAP the next day. I was a bit disappointed by the vocal mixing of overkill. Their records always have the vocals mixed low, but I was hoping they'd be clearer live. Luckily the music stands on it's own without the vocals.

Cool! I'm seeing them on Sunday night.

I've found that decent earplugs help a lot with bringing out the vocal mix. Cutting out the insane low-end that a lot of bands/venues seem to use is almost necessary for me to enjoy a show at this point.

You guys familiar with Thy Catafalque and Tamás Kátai?

Here is a recent article about them from Metalbandcamp.com

They are an interesting avant-garde band.

Vashegyek - A really good song from their previous album. Long (14 min), but a cool song.

Gire - Gire, An album that Tamás did the drum programming and keys for. Solid deathmetal album with Hungarian folk inspiration.

Tough one. Reminds me a lot of The Offspring but with a darker mood.

Not sure if anyone posted this yet but Bruce Fitzhugh (Living Sacrifice), Travis Turner (Aletheian, Crutch, Mid Evil, Solamors), and Alex Kenis (Aletheian, Crutch, Solamors, Becoming the Archetype, Synoptic Rise) did a one-off cover of Megadeth's "Holy Wars...The Punishment Due" to celebrate Rust in Peace's 25th Anniversary (which is tomorrow, btw).

The two singles released so far have been far more up my alley than Sunbather was. Stoked to give this a full listen.

I wouldn't say far more up my alley, but I'm mostly in the same boat. The new album slays. I think I'll ultimately like it better than Sunbather.

Space 1992 is out NOWWWWWWWWW

As for myself, amazon autorip is being as wonky for preorders as it usually is, so I'm hoping my digipack comes in before the campus post office closes at 3.

The word I would use to describe seeing Alcest live a few years ago is "sensual." Like if you muted the music and played "Love Hurts" by Nazareth while watching it would probably make perfect sense.

Have a Nice Life opened. Decent show.

holy
fucking
shit

this is amazing
Space 1992 is as awesome as I could ever want it to be. 7 songs in, and no bullshit ballad filler (even if Frozen tears on their last album was above average). I already know Universe on Fire is good, and a I heard good things about Apocalypse, so if Heroes is good, we have a 10/10 album here.

If any physical-only people are on the fence, the Digipack is on amazon. It took some digging to find.

So Sunbather is a top 5 album of all time for me I think. I have listened to this 4 or 5 times at this point and I really like it but I don't think it will top Sunbather for me. That's not to say, I think its "worse" or anything. I can totally see people who didn't like Sunbather for a variety of reasons being into this way more than Sunbather. For starters, it's quite a shade more "metal" than Sunbather but to me, I miss that layered, reverb packed style of Sunbather. I feel like New Bermuda has very hard lines drawn between the "heavy" parts and the "soft" parts and the transitions between the 2 don't feel as natural. Whereas I think Sunbather flowed quite nicely in that respect. Probably mostly because the overall production and songwriting was just dreamier in general.

I think everyone should give this a shot regardless of how they felt about Sunbather and I honestly imagine this album will grow their fanbase quite a bit. I'm seeing them live with Tribulation next month and I can't wait to see how these songs translate live.

I completely feel this. I think the opening track (Brought to the Water) is a great example of this. The first part has a sinister and very black metal sound, and then it just light switches to some airy major scale kinda sound. It kind feels like they are trying to shoehorn things together. And then the piano outro...ugh.

I am gonna listen to the rest of the album now.

Well, nuking Earth is one way to stop a demon summoning I guess

I'm glad they put the "obligatory album closing ambiance" in a separate track though.

I can definitely recommend Space 1992: rise of the chaos wizards to anyone who liked rhapsody albums 3-5ish and Luca turilli's solo work (particularly prophet of the last eclipse).

I really like the expanded keyboard presence in this.

your band sounds cool, it;s kinda hard to place cos you sound like a few bands meshed, so id say traditonal metal, your band actually reminds me of a local band here in wales called triaxis, a little bit, although they sound like they have more iron maiden, power metall-ish influnce and you guys have a bit less of that sound and more of your own

Cheers dude. Where in Wales are you? We're London based so if you're ever up hear come see us!

Always love seeing Scorpions getting the appreciation they deserve. They're easily my favourite hard rock band, and somehow I just don't get bored of listening to them. Probably because they have so many brilliant albums and didn't really settle into a sound for too long.

Pomegranate Tiger is going to release details of their new album soon. *excited*
Entities was sooooo good. They've really got everything in there, but I guess some more structure and thematic cohesion would make for better listening. Each song feels like phases of sounds.

Dat Mountains in the Sky tho.

It's hard to say based on a poor-quality live recording (sorry, not a knock, it's just how most youtube live recordings sound like). I'd guess just traditional metal/hard rock based on that one song but it's not really enough to go by. Any studio recording we could listen to? :)

While listening through the orchestral bonus disc, I thought of something...

What are some of your guys favorite use of orchestra? I would have to say Blind Guardian's "Wheel of Time" remains my favorite.

The whole discography of Fleshgod Apocalypse comes to mind. It's just such a beautiful contrast to the rest of the band.

Not so much orchestra but I really really dig it when a background choir sings something and the lead singer does something completely different. To hear e.g. on Nightwish's Ghost Love Score or Epica's Monopoly On Truth

Not yet but hopefully very soon :)

Even cooler (when done right) is dual layered vocal tracks by the vocalist, although it obviously can't be replicated live. "I AM" by Theocracy is a good example.
Therion, definitely.

Most orchestral stuff is utter crap
Wish to be more specific?

Wish to be more specific?

For me, Therion pretty much nailed it with Theli amd Lepaca Kliffoth. Those albums were written around the orchestral stuff. Everything Therion has done since has sounded like them trying to reclaim lost glories.

Everything else that i have heard which tries to incorporate orchestral elements just comes off as silly and amateurish. Like someone wrote a metal album and then said, "You know what would sound awesome? An orchestra shoehorned into this generic metal song." Nightwish in particular is a band that i have no respect for whatsoever.

This of couse is just my subjective opinion and I am always happy to have my opinion changed if you think I'm wrong or have a different opinion.

Going back and really listening through Rabbit Don't Come Easy, it makes me realize how badly talent degradation affected Helloween, and it's kind of sad. My God Given Right was ok-ish, but it just didn't have the needed aggression to liven it up, which really hurts given helloween's album structure that sacrifices a bit of originality on a song to song basis for a greater quantity, which is ok I guess if you really want the room for extra lyrical topics.

RDCE is an absolutely fantastic album, on that note. For any curious, it's on prime streaming.

I disagree personally about Nightwish, but this is how I feel about a lot of Symphonic Metal myself. Generic orchestral compositions slapped on top of generic Metal riffs, and the result is a band that cannot compose either Metal or Orchestral music, and so many of the bands that try to do it just end up making a mess. The two bands I personally listed I feel transcend the traps (Toumas can really freaking compose), and Within Temptation have some good songs (but even I can't stand that band), but the genre as a whole is woefully inconsistent for that reason.

EDIT: I forgot Sceptiflesh! Doh.

I wouldn't class septic flesh as an orchestral band though. Lots of symphonic elements, but they are still a death metal band at their core.

I think the only capital S Symphonic metal album I ever got into was Dark Lunacy's The Diarist, and even then the symphonic elements were used pretty sparingly. There are lots of great bands that utilize orchestral sounds though, both synthesized and for-realsies. Summoning, Saor, Subrosa, etc. Hell, even the most recent Arkona has some, and it isn't quite as overproduced and schlocky as it used to be.

I think that partially my issue with most symphonic metal is that a lot of metal already has a lot of roots in classical and folk anyway, so adding in actual orchestral instruments is just too much of a pile-on.
