The Metal Thread |OT2| All Riffs, No Gifs

... Emperor Nafaryus? They're making a Star Wars joke ... right?

Yeah, the naming is a bit too much I think, haha. But then again, most rock operas are quite silly and I love it when if they hit the sweetspot between cheesy and seriousness. I have a feeling this will be a fun ride of epic prog metal. At the very least I expect it to be quite a distinct DT album.

Yeah no more silly than any other fantasy metal story.

Coming early 2016. New concept album. New 2016 tour will play album live in its entirety.

Dream Theater have confirmed that their forthcoming album will be a double-LP rock opera titled The Astonishing. This episodic narrative, in the tradition of earlier concept albums like 2002’s Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, turns on an effort by the Ravenskill Rebel Militia to overthrow the Great Northern Empire of the Americas in the year 2285.

The empire, as laid out in a pair of newly emailed releases from Dream Theater, follows “Lord Nafaryus, Emperor and Head of the Realm [and] Heir to the Mantle of Makers,” who sternly warns the populace that giving into the rebels will lead to a “destabilization of our most hallowed traditions.” Ravenskill, meanwhile, is led by “Arhys, Son of Marhys, one of three remaining heirs to the displaced, forgotten, and forbidden Legion of Sorrowful Song.” He’s asking his followers to “dream of finding power beyond powerlessness.”

Dream Theater are promoting the upcoming work with a new splash page at their website, which asks fans to “choose wisely” between the two forces.

No official street date has been announced yet for The Astonishing, the follow-up to Dream Theater’s 2013 self-titled album. But the band has already revealed a series of European tour dates, beginning in mid-February, during which the new album will be played in its entirety.
Cool concept with some nice accompanying artwork, but I don't like DT's style all that much TBH.

Listening to the new album by Devil You know (Metalcore), the band that Howard Jones (KSE) is in now, and god have I missed his vocals. His transitions from clean to scream vocals is unparalleled. I also really like the drummer in this band, he does a tremendous job, especially in the track Stay of Execution. All in all, a pretty good album, a definite improvement over their debut album, too.

Good stuff, if you like Metalcore, check this album out.

DT has been my favorite band for quite some time now and still is, but I've been listening to a lot more power metal these days. Kamelot, Dark Moor, Amaranthe (never thought I'd say that but Massive Addictive is pretty good), DragonForce, etc... Still always excited for a new DT album. And damn it's taking forever for the new Seventh Wonder album to come out.

I'm with you. DT is easily my favorite band (followed by Nightwish and X Japan), but I really like some nice, "easy listening" power metal every once in a while.

I think lately most of my music listening happens while I'm at the gym and there's no substitute for some fast power metal to get you pumped for big lifts. If anyone's interested, try this playlist out for lifting weights.

1. Rule the World - Kamelot
2. Maid of Orleans - Dark Moor
3. Legend - Symphony X
4. Three Hammers - DragonForce
5. Unreal - Amaranthe
6. A New World - Dark Moor
7. The Enemy Inside - Dream Theater
8. Nightmare - Avenged Sevenfold
9. The Fourth Legacy - Kamelot
10. Death Throes of the Terrorsquid - Alestorm

Yes, this bothers me. What is even more odd to me is that there is also no sign of the live DVD recorded during progpower USA last year . I get that the guys (besides Tommy) have other jobs and all, but I at least expected to hear more after they actually released a single and recorded a DVD (I mean, that material is already there).

And regarding Tommy, I saw Kamelot live a few weeks ago and Tommy was goddamn amazing live. Third time I saw him (with Kamelot) but he was/is on fire this tour. And they are planning to record a DVD next year, should be great! The fact that the European Haven tour was the biggest in their career yet and Haven their best charting album is amazing. Couldn't have hoped for a better replacement for Kahn.

The official SW site continues to post updates that both the Mercy Falls live DVD and next album are coming but it sounds like there are a lot of politics in getting them released. That's how it has been for the past year. Who knows? But it's encouraging they still post news comments and just posted a pic of the whole band together.

Tommy is a great replacement. I saw them live on the Haven tour with DragonForce and thought DF would be the more headbanging set but Kamelot tore it up. It was incredible. Why do bands keep producing DVDs instead of Blu Rays?

The pittsburg concert just last night. They changed venues at the last minute: I really would have liked to have some seating and breathing room so the Altar Bar kinda sucked as a venue IMO in comparison to the Carnegie Library.

I had awesome seats for the Carnegie Library venue so I was also pretty bummed about the last minute change.

Saw Kataklysm and Belphegor on Friday and my wife was able to get one of the picks Belphegor handed out at the end of the show. My first piece of concert memorabilia!

He's a fire fighter.

The new StS album is awesome. First disc is pretty standard StS, second disc is dark acoustic stuff, third disc is dark and evil shit and slow as hell.

The next few months are going to be the most amazing set of shows I've ever gone to, starting last week..

2015
11/6 - Kataklysm / Belphegor
11/11 - Deafheaven / Tribulation (mainly went for Tribulation)
11/28 - Blind Guardian / Grave Digger

2016
1/22 - Paths of Possession
2/3 - Epica / Moonspell / Starkill
2/8 - Fleshgod Apocalypse / Carach Angren / Abigail Williams
2/10 - At the Gates / Harm's Way
2/18 - Marty Friedman
2/24 - Iron Maiden
3/23 - Nightwish / Sonata Arctica / Delain
5/20 - Luca Turilli's Rhapsody / Primal Fear

Hopefully I'm not forgetting anything, but I think that's all I've got lined up.. I've never had such a crazy run of shows before. Gonna be great!

Enjoying the new Swallow the Sun. Only on my second listen, but it seems like they managed to pull off a triple album without either feeling repetitive or watering down the quality of each album. The different sides of Swallow the Sun approach for each disc paid off. Really great stuff.

I love the new Draconian and My Dying Bride albums as well. It's been a stellar year for Gothic Doom releases.

Nice! That's the same pick I got when they came here in Rio de Janeiro, only difference is that my one is black.

No Kataklysm concert here, though :c

I'll be damned if the new Horrendous album isn't an unapologetically uncompromising slab of masterfully executed old school death metal. These kids have been on my radar for a while, but I think they've finally claimed their place. Here's hoping this becomes a sleeper hit, they've absolutely earned it. Nailed it from the very start.

11/11 - Deafheaven / Tribulation (mainly went for Tribulation)

Always great to see that the metal community's infantile need to openly express rejection/disdain for anything that dares to stray from the perceived paradigm is still alive and kicking... We really don't deserve bands like Deafheaven. They're a shining example of what metal is most sorely lacking these days and yet everywhere I go, the so called metal fan insists on openly distancing him/herself or dismissing/poopooing on them (lest their kvlt reputation get lost in the ether). Especially concerning these aoty discussions that have started sprouting up everywhere, it's absolutely hilarious to see just how jaded the modern metal fan really has become.

They're really not my style. I listened to New Bermuda and it had a couple moments that I dug, and my friend wanted to see them, so we stuck around. I have to say that they were extremely disappointing live (as far as showmanship). Sure, the vocalist was a madman, but the rest of the band might as well have been mannequins. I've seen more movement from the band at Chuck E Cheese.

Come on man. Metal fans I know like innovation, but don't just buy into nameless "hype". We also have the tendency to be skeptical of buzzwords and other empty statements. Deafheaven aren't really doing anything interesting to some of us. If you find it as such, that's great, but don't try to be pretentious about it.

That's kind of a hyperbolic response for an incredibly plain statement of "i went to this show because i like tribulation" where an opinion of any sort on deafhaven was barely even expressed. I know they do get a lot of shit, and if you like them and read about metal online a lot, you're definitely sick of it by now, and being frustrated is reasonable, but damn, a statement of "you're a stupid child for not liking this thing" is overkill in response to the way that opinion was phrased..

on that note, I should listen to new bermuda while working today. I still haven't given it a shot and BM is such great productivity music.

Going back to some Power Quest makes me sad that the band folded. It's been 4 years since Blood Alliance.

The Longest Night
Far Away (Extra shame here, since Wings of Forever could really use a good remaster)
Survive
Time to Burn

I got into them earlier than some less obscure stuff because Sam Totman was a guitarist for their first few albums (midway through Far Away sounds like it was ripped right out of a Valley of the Damned song). That album at least is worth a listen if you liked VotD, and their later stuff is cool if you like to crank up 80s style synth.

If you don't think there is a large contingent of metal heads that are blindly dismissing Deafheaven because of their look or because Pitchfork gives them glowing reviews, you are wrong.

edit: And to be clear, I'm not accusing XShagrath of doing that. I'm just saying those people exist and are plentiful

I know jack shit about Deafheaven aside from the comments here. Listening to this new album I'd say their ok. The drummer is really good but otherwise what makes these guys so special, in any way? Their kind of right in the middle of meh...who cares for me. Not worth adding to my library.

That Horrendous album on the other hand is fucking awesome! Not my kind of vocals but the music more than makes up for that.

Fuck that. I saw the same show in Atlanta, and Tribulation are for sure the better band. I was interested to see Deafheaven and I think New Bermuda is a pretty solid album, but it just came off as boring live. I get that they are unfairly hated on by the metal community, but there is some truth to the hate. It's not just because pitchfork likes them.

Deafheaven are very popular though. Crowd was kinda thin for Tribulation, but then it got pretty damn crowded by the time Deafheaven played.

Man, I fucked up hard not getting a ticket to their Atlanta show. The venue they are playing in is so small.

I just bought my ticket for the St. Louis show right before I saw your post. The venue they are playing here is super small as well. Must be something they are doing this tour, playing small venues. It's weird too because there is a slightly bigger venue right next door that is owned by the same people that I think would be closer to their popularity level.

Haha, what a bunch of pissy, pretentious rubbish. So someone doesn't like a band you like and prefers another band instead. Somehow that's OK when it's a presently trending band, but how dare they be so "narrow-minded" when it's the opposite? He didn't even shit on the band, he just said he preferred the other, yet you write this insane rant?

What's even more infantile about the metal community is this bizarre notion that if you don't like specific bands (usually the artsy and "original" hipster favourites), you're somehow narrow-minded and an elitist meanie and a "problem" of the metal community. Complete nonsense.

I've been meaning to write about this album for a while, but Running Wild's Death or Glory is absolutely amazing. It's definitely one of the only albums I've heard that uses the Pirate theme and makes it sound so genuine, full of energy, and really has an air of authenticity to the experience. Favorite songs off the album?

On another note, my school is improving due to starting ADHD therapy and getting the help I needed. Thanks Metal, I wouldn't be here without you!
