The Metal Thread |OT2| All Riffs, No Gifs

arrggghhh. Martin Van Drunen IS Hail of Bullets. Much like how he was Pestilence and Asphyx. Martin Van Drunen is THE death metal vocalist god. Oh well, I felt Hail of Bullets were on their way out anyways.

Huh, that is surprising. And yeah, pretty much agree even though it's been a long time since I really listened to them (or Asphyx). Every once in a while I still go back to the behemoth that is General Winter.

Watain was awesome on Saturday night. They played a great set, and the lighting was badass. The rotting pig heads were pretty rank.

For reasons I can't fully explain, I adore the album art for the upcoming Rhapsody of Fire Album, Into the Legend. Maybe it's the use of color. Font for the album name looks kinda off, but reminds me of a booster pack cover.

EDIT: I think the entire artwork gives a trading card aesthetic. Not sure if intentional or not but it makes me nostalgic.

The single they released at least sounds leagues better than dark wings of steel, and is actually reminiscent of Dawn of Victory at times. Hopefully, it turns out competent even without turilli.

I've been in a mostly shitty mood all day and for some reason and ended up playing black or blackened metal most of the day lol.

Started my day with this one. Awesome riffs!
Desaster - The Arts of Destruction

Followed up Desaster with this and it's good but Desaster was a bit better.
Nocturnal Breed - Fields of Rot

First half of this was damn good. Very clear symbols and drums which I love. Second third or half was a bit too much like opera for lack of a better word.
Moonspell - The Antidote

These were bad ass.
Carach Angren - This is no Fairy Tale
Enslaved - In Times
Summoning - Stronghold (playing now)

Eh....was ok. Didn't hit a chord like the last three.
Barbatos - Straight Metal War

Good ol' thrash
Cripper - Antagonist

been hammered by both work and school full-time, but I've been listening to practically nothing but USBM for the past couple months. One band in particular that I've become obsessed with is Yellow Eyes (NY). These guys have maintained a largely independent existence for the past five years, running their own label and everything. They have recently signed to the great Gilead Media for the release of their 2015 LP, Sick with Bloom. Couldn't have been a more appropriate label. These guys play fairly unconventional black metal, and some will hear influences from statesmen Krallice, but compared to them it's much more stripped down, massive, and melancholic. I enjoy everything they've put out and have everything except for the Hammer of Night die hard tapes. Listen to "Heat from Other Days" off their most recent EP and also the preview for their new LP which has just begun shipping. The digital will be released next Saturday.

when my Sick with Bloom LPs roll through I'll post my collection. I actually moved back to the south bay for school and most of my collection is 70 miles away from me, but all my Yellow Eyes shit is here. Support this great band.

I'm really liking the Our Oceans album, especially the song "Turquoise." I love how the song just builds up to a chaotic crescendo at the end.

Great post. I need to check out some of their later stuff. I wasn't super into their first album but Hammer of Night was great. I kind of fell off checking out their releases after that.

New Dream Theater track The Gift of Music

I like it! Very melodic, it reminds me of Scenes and Six Degrees DT whilst still feeling fresh.

And the Rolling Stone magazine article about their upcoming album:
http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/inside-dream-theaters-wildly-ambitious-new-concept-lp-20151203

-Releases on 29th of Jan
-Composer David Campbell involved (orchestration, choirs)
-The concept is an idea Petrucci has been working on since two and a half years ago. It wasn't just something they just decided to do while recording.

Maybe one narration only piece

What is that thing in the cover art supposed to be? A floating speaker chair?

To quote DT on the Cover Art.

"This album cover extends an ominous invitation into the retro-futurist dystopian setting of The Astonishing. The deceptively beautiful yet chillingly totalitarian image is a bold harbinger of the visual components and ideas presented by the sonic story that is our most ambitious creative work to date. We are very proud to soon bring you…The Astonishing.”

Floating Speaker Chair :)

So many words yet so little said

Small vinyl haul from 2nd Avenue Records in Portland. If you're in the area and love metal vinyl and shirts, go there.

The Vio-Lence - Eternal Nightmare re-issue is fucking awesome. Great re-master and packaging. Vio-Lence! Smashing your teeth right out of place! The thrash metal riff bible.

Tesseract Polaris continues to be AOTY. There are at least a handful of all-timer moments on this album and a prog metal vox masterclass (i.e. the way the vox plays off of the accents in the rhythm in the chorus in 'Hexes'). Genius level.

nice haul as usual and that does look like a nice reissue. It was part of the headline for the latest Hells Headbangers newsletter and I wanted to jump on it. I actually was thinking about biting on an original LP of it a couple months ago, glad I waited. There's a lot of good fucking thrash reissues coming out lately. High Roller has been rolling out reissues for Possessed, Armoros, Agent Steel, and Nuclear Assault. My pickups focus has been mostly black metal for the past few months but I got my Christmas bonus last week lol. Gonna be a heavy holiday.

a second track has been released from the new Yellow Eyes entitled "The Mangrove, The Preserver". The full digital will be released on Friday, not Saturday like I originally mentioned. With any luck though I'll have my LPs before then. I also found a copy of the Hammer of Night die hard tape box, so pending a few arrivals my Yellow Eyes collection is complete. US of fucking A.

edit: Abhomine, cancelled all their west coast dates including the Oakland show that was supposed to happen this Friday, which I also took a day off for. Good shit.

I knew I was forgetting something really obvious, but Morbid Saint's immortal Spectrum of Death is going to be reissued on CD and LP by Century Media who have done an excellent job on a lot of old school stuff. Fuck off to $300 CDs! The Relapse LP is commanding a crazy price as well. Century Media rules.

on the subject of Morbid Saint, their unreleased second album is receiving the wax treatment. I haven't heard of the label behind it, but the release is being exclusively distributed by Nuclear War Now! in the states. If it's being backed by NWN! then it must be legit. The LPs would have been up in the NWN! store by now but apparently some jackets arrived damaged, so Yosuke the label operator is waiting on another batch.

check out this picture of the die hard version, looks ace:

The fuck? Spectrum of Death re-issued again? I've got the Relapse vinyl last year or so. As if the first album wasn't already a lost gem, the second one was quite as good if I remember!
