The Metal Thread |OT2| All Riffs, No Gifs

some 2016 black metal I'd like to recommend.

Cantique Lépreux (QC) - Cendres Célestes

about as traditional as it gets when it comes to cold, somber black metal from Québec. Produced wonderfully. High clarity without sterility, great atmosphere.

listen

I want something like this, but instrumental. Anyone got any recs?

Uh...instrumental black metal isn't really a thing (besides maybe demos or something?)

Still, check out Lantlos' first album (self-titled), maybe you'll dig it. Similar guitar tone and very moody/somber melodies. Love it, along with their second album .neon (which is more jazzy). They abandoned the black metal aspects after .neon unfortunately

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_ApaSELFUM here's a .neon track

Also Hate Forest is ultra rad

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2-AZwJ4hB8

Obviously both have vocals but maybe you'll dig them?

Excited about the reissues of Ulver's first three albums on vinyl. Have all three on black vinyl preordered and been listening to Nattens Madrigal at least once a day for the past week. What a brilliant black metal album once you get past the buzzsaw sounds.

Tempel is the only completely instrumental BM band I can think of off the top of my head. I really like them.

Tempel - Mountain

Interesting. The twisted/slidy progressions in the riffs combined with downtuning and layering remind me of like industrial black metal or something like NKVD (without having a drum machine or whatever)

It's definitely not something I'd want to see live (haaaate wall of sound bands live) but I can totally dig this

Sorry if this was already posted, but here's a new Moonsorrow track up at Metalsucks. I dig it actually, cool video too.
That and the Rotting Christ cover were pretty damn good. I'm still concerned about the rest of the tracks though, they're still going for those 15-min long songs that are typically boring and meandering. I miss the early Moonsorrow days... I hope this new one is more in the veins of Voimasta ja Kunniasta or Suden Uni than the last two.

Boy oh boy do I have a riff stuck in my head that I just CANNOT figure out the song it's from. It's some sort of melodeath thing, I thought maybe Amon Amarth, but now I'm not so sure. It's driving me bonkers.

This is far from the first time this has happened in my life too.

wow.. when I saw machine head it was at a crappy small place in Mesa.

Any other KSE fans in here? Curious what others think of the new album.

"Hate by Design", the song from their new album, is damn awesome. I haven't really been interested in their output since Howard Jones left, but Jesse seems to have found a really nice clean vocal. Still need to give the whole album a few more listens before I decide if KsE is truly back.

You guys should check out Show Me a Dinosaur. Holy shit this album is so good. Like, it pretty quickly went from "random Youtube find" to "potential AOTY contender". If you like atmospheric BM and post-rock, you'll probably like this.

Definitely good stuff. Right up my alley. I pretty much check out everything on that channel and I'd say I enjoy about 75% of what gets uploaded.

WTF is up with that band name though? Their bandcamp says they are Russian so maybe it's just an awkward translation or something.

I like their name. I bought this shirt:

It takes so much more to impress me in this style. There is a metric shit ton of this stuff out there, more so than even djent at it's peak.

On a more positive note, a Graveland/Nokturnal Mortum split came out recently. New NM is one of the most underrated bands out there.

Yeah, I like the Album, but feel it's a bit weaker than Disarm. But I prefer Jesse KSE to Howard KSE

I go every once in awhile to check the "news" on Blabbermouth.

It's not like the discussion is ever civil, but holy crap the place is PACKED with Trump supporters. Just bursting at the seams.

Feeling disappointed.

Yo this is some good stuff. Imma cop these dudes. That t-shirt is boss as well.

I mean, there's a reason I don't read comments on Metal sites like Metalsucks or whatever. Best bet is to just check out well-viewed or publicized blogs like HeavyBlogIsHeavy that have like, no one ever commenting on their stuff so you can just get good reviews and recommendations without all the toxicity of online metal communities.

Seems wise.

first two Gorguts and first three Suffocation full-lengths to be reissued on vinyl by Listenable Records in May and June. This will be a first for The Erosion of Sanity and Pierced from Within. This news made my day.

listen

Every time I tell myself hey I can cool off on buying records, something comes up. Time to complete Gorguts.

vinyl is crackin'. What a time to be alive.

Best Gorguts album and best Suffocation album.

I really can't believe these two are just now receiving wax justice. Old school technical brutality at its finest.

edit: actually Pierced was bootlegged a few years back, but obviously it was a poor CD sourced release.

Looks like I'm going to see Melt Banana on Monday. Didn't get the chance to see them when they last came through here so I'm happy I get a second chance. They are opening for the Melvins and Napalm Death.

You and me, buddy! April 16th for me, already got my tickets.

Semi-amused that I'm pretty much going for Melt Banana and if they go on first I'm probably just gonna leave lol

Melt Banana is awesome live, hopefully you're expecting their current lineup (two piece with drum machine + recorded bass)

I'd like to go to that show but as you've said, I only want to see them. I've seen Napalm twice and I've been disappointed both times. From Enslavement To Obliteration is my favorite album but the current lineup is sloppy garbage with inconsistent overtriggered blasts. Utilitarian was one of the first modern Napalm albums that really clicked with me and I was super let down on that tour, sounded like they were struggling to play the songs

Yeah, I've been listening to MB and going to their shows since they toured with Mike Patton over 10 years ago. Haven't missed a Boston one yet (maybe...)

And yeah I won't be staying cause both times I saw Napalm they were super underwhelming. That and I've seen enough Melvins to be alright never seeing them again.

One more new song from Cult of Luna and Julie Christmas collab Mariner The Wreck of S.S. Needle.

I love these guys.

It's amazing and you should be ashamed of your actions. Or rather, lack of action. Give it a spin.

Oh I did. I may have also given "Mariner" a spin due to my Julie Christmas love. Both impressive outings. Mmm. Christmas.

I'm pretty much going just to see Melt Banana as well lol. I may stick around for Napalm Death though as I've only seen them once before. I don't really care about the Melvins though.

Ha ha ha. I love my boss. He regularly stops by my desk and just hands me a CD then goes "Listen to this. We're going to the show tomorrow" and he'll just drag me to the most random metal shows. He's the reason I went to the Exodus/King Diamond show when it was 3PM and he stops by and goes "Yo, you're going with me to King Diamond tonight" and I fucking show up to the show in my damn work suit. He's the one that alerted me about the Melt Banana show so we're going to that then going to the Babymetal show in May with probably some more stops in between. Dude listens to fucking EVERYTHING he's got the widest array of music taste I've ever heard. He pretty much has no life outside of work except music and he knows the most obscure metal bands in the world, grabbed their CD and a shirt and saw them open before they were big. He's that dude.

He's the one who gave me a press copy of "Mariner" and geeked out with me about Julie Christmas yesterday for like an hour. Today he stopped by my desk and our water cooler talk moved from CoL to Isis to Fall of Efrafa and Downfall of Gaia. Dude just went to his office to burn me Amenra's "Mass III" cause he said I need to give it a listen.

Love this guy.

Amon Amarth's Raise your Horns will be another concert classic. I can already hear chorus sing-a-long

Pretty good album otherwise, only they should get another female guest vocalists, I can't stand Doro

I feel like I'm the only one who enjoyed the duet.
I love this album, the only issue I have is cheesy lyrics.

You are in vast minority, that is true :D Doro is not bad, but there is something in her voice that made her singing totally unbearable

Can't wait for Queen of Hunting's impressions (#1 AA fan on GAF) :P
