The Metal Thread |OT2| All Riffs, No Gifs

yeah... new meshuggah is exactly what I wanted. love it way more than obzen and koloss. I can't even tell what song is my favorite yet.

I bought tickets instantly for the chicago show coming up... so it looks like I'll be seeing them a 5th time :)

Boris is all over the place and hard to pinpoint anything. Seen them a bunch of times and are one of my favorite bands live. I would suggest:

Drone/Doom/Sludge
Amplifier Worship
Dronevil
Absolutego

Garage/Hard rock
Pink
Heavy Rocks (2002)
Heavy Rocks (2011)
Smile (Japan version)

Collaborations
Boris & Sunn O))) - Altar
Boris & Ian Atsbury - BXI ep

None of the Drone/Sludge stuff seems to be on itunes. Boo.

Better than both? Oh man, I'm ready for this.

The two new songs were absolutely killer. Meshuggah is the Tim Duncan of Metal for me.

Damn, can't believe I hadn't been introduced to these guys before.

Stratovarius - Hunting High And Low

As intro riffs go that's one of the best I've ever heard.

Edit: DBZ fans arguing in the comments for some reason, I guess it was used in a video or something. As usual, don't read youtube comments.

Are you serious? Stratovarius is tremendously influential in power metal. Even if they don't listen to them everyone has heard of Stratovarius.

both of the new full-lengths released via New Standard Elite are outstanding. Covers omitted, later being NSFW.

Ecchymosis (THA) - Aberrant Amusement in Cadaveric Vomitplay

Dissevered (LAO) - Agonized Wails of Disseverment

there's something about Asian people and brutal death metal. Especially Indonesia. I love both of these, but Ecchymosis in particular is flat out incredible. I got my CDs the other day from Comatose, but you can get them from NSE directly once again. Other than the Ossification EP and promos, my NSE collection is complete. Support this wonderful label.

The cover of the new Meshuggah record looks like something from Mortal Kombat Deception.

Eternal Champion - The Armor of Ire

This dropped a couple of weeks ago and by Crom is it really good. Classic epic heavy metal similar to Manilla Road.

I honestly dislike the album art. I never liked the oiled + tacky woman look.
I listened to a song as well and was meh overall on it.

In upcoming stuff the Iron Mask (the band every power metal fan has listened to on youtube but never bought anything from) album is looking pretty slick: Iron Mask - Oliver Twist.

You mean there's a Summoning tribute/cover album coming December????

Track listing:

Mesarthim- Grey Havens
Druadan Forest - Beyond Bloodred Horizons
Azaghal - Where Winters Forever Cry
Sarkistei - Soul Wandering
Thy Light - Lugburz
Oþalan - The Passing of the Grey Company
Evilfeast - Arcenstone & Morthond
Demonic Slaughter - Marching Homewards
Kalmankantaja - Through the Forest of Dol Guldur
Galdur - Angbands Schmieden
Wyrd feat. V-KhaoZ- Nightshade Forests
Avathar - Elfstone
Wędrujący Wiatr - Like Some Snow-White Marble Eyes
Midnight Odyssey - Where Hope and Daylight Die

Dreams Of Nature - A New Power Is Rising
Severoth - A distant Flame Before the Sun
Emyn Muil- Menegroth
Eldamar - Land of the Dead
Elderwind - Flammifer
Caladan Brood - TBA

Where do I offer my first born to buy this???

I want to like Messuggah but at some point they seemed to lose the ability to vary up the pace of their songs very much. I listen to tons of doom and other pretty repetitive stuff, but I haven't been able to get into them since Chaosphere.

Catch 33 and I is the Meshuggah I like. Never really been into their regular length type stuff.

I love all Meshuggah, but I remember when obZen came out they got way too hyped and became sort of overrated. They're really really good, but they're not Neurosis good.

Thordendal got a fucking fantastic solo album though.

I know you guys probably don't really like talking about Metalcore etc; (nowhere to talk about it) but holy shit, The Devil Wears Prada's new album came out, and blew my expectations.

Its amazing how much they've evolved.

I don't mind Metalcore. I can just sometimes be picky about which ones I listen to.

I really enjoy the new Every Time I Die album ("Low Teens").

Saw them at a festival this summer and didn't care for them. Made a playlist with them in it for that festival and liked a couple of the songs that came up. Tried to listen to a couple albums and couldn't get into it.

I'll give the new one a shot though.

Fair enough. A lot of it is really bad so I can understand why.

Low Teens is fantastic, and I don't think ETID can even release a bad album.

I'm curious what albums you listened to.

But I would give Transit Blues a shot, its much better than anything they've released before

Seems like they're going for the classic pulpy swords and sorcery aesthetic, but instead of Robert E Howard its Michael Moorcock.

Whew that is a great lineup. A good mix of dungeon synth and atmospheric BM artists.

I love all Meshuggah, but I remember when obZen came out they got way too hyped and became sort of overrated. They're really really good, but they're not Neurosis good.

Sol Niger Within is the ultimate Meshuggah album. Haake's vocals are 10x better than the guy in Meshuggah.

Thanks for this, but that didn't move the needle for me. The sound mix is awful and the vocals (I'm thinking this is my main issue with this band) are borderline cringe. There are parts that sound like he is singing on top of the music and I hate that.

But again, thanks for the link.

no problem, to each their own :)

Gave the new Meshuggah a try at work today and it's just not for me I guess. Can't really tell the songs apart.

Maybe some day, but probably not. Glad fans are happy though.

Reign in Blood is 30 years old today!

Luckily I'm a delivery driver so I'll be celebrating all day.
Funny, I just ripped by old Slayer cds so I could listen to them in the car. I don't think RiB will last my whole commute but I'll supplement with some Hell Awaits.

SitA is 26 on Sunday.

All this makes me feel so fucking old. I had the cassettes. RiB had come out maybe a couple years before I bought it, but I bought SitA when it came out.

Discussion.

For you, what are some Metal songs that make you kind of fall back stunned due to their craziness/heaviness/intensity? I need something that will floor me!
