The Metal Thread |OT2| All Riffs, No Gifs

I'm the same, and this city has zero metal concerts. There's is a Lacuna Coil gig this sunday though, I might end up going.

And a Rotting Christ concert the 15, that one I can't miss. It will be the only black/death metal concert in at least a year.

It's not so much my city....OK maybe that's the point. I also just can't make the dang concerts. So much time I take up with other things. It's frustrating, I guess.

Someday though, I have to start going again. If anything, I just want to support the damn musicians some more.

does scion still do those metal fests? i remember going to 2 of them on in....rialto? i think. another in LA. like 2011 2012 ish time haha

Speed Metal = Power Metal? I'd say DragonForce and Kamelot.

ehhh no not really.

Metal-GAF, what can you guys recommend someone noobish like me that want to start listening to Speed Metal.

First few Blind Guardian albums may suit your needs:
• Battalions of Fear
• Follow The Blind
• Tales From The Twilight World (this is when they were shifting away into the more recognized Power Metal influence)

Other older bands:
• Exciter
• Running Wild
• Helloween (especially Keeper Of The Seven Keyes I & II)

For somewhat modern-ish speed metal:
• Cranium - Speed Metal Satan
• Cranium - Speed Metal Slaughter
• Cranium - Speed Metal Sentence
• Enforcer - Death By Fire
• Enforcer - Diamonds
• Enforcer - Into The Night

Those bands are very tongue in cheek and obliviously over the top, but the music captures raw Speed Metal at it's heart.

and no Speed Metal conversation is complete without the Canadian Speed Metal "swirl:

My bad, I was recommending it in the context of speed metal, but in a way that attempted to express that I don't know whether or not it counts.

Ah yes definitely. Those bands may not be up there with todays standards, but back then labels being thrown around. The Speed Metal swirl logo was attached to all that old stuff like Bathory, Celtic Frost, Destruction, Running Wild stuff. I don't consider them under that Speed Metal label musically at all.

And another track from upcoming Septic Flesh album Titan - Burn

Odin bless me with your son's thunder and throw me to Freya's wolves

For friggio's sake, that is so good. It is unique and dark in a way most metal songs aren't (due to the style of the song -- the vocals of the chorus in particular being sung in way that is casually evil). That song on its own won't sell anyone on Septic Flesh as a whole, but I have a very good feeling that it will fit in beautifully within the context of the album as a whole.

GALS AND GUYS... this is going to be the best year for metal in a long time -- I've mentioned it before, but the new Anubis Gate kicks SO MUCH ASS. I haven't linked to a song yet from the album, but HERE, have a taste. After revisiting the Anubis Gate discography these past couple of weeks, I've come to the firm conclusion that the ranking of my favorite prog metal bands are:

Rush
Anubis Gate = Haken (<--- so goddam excellent if you've never heard of them)
Dream Theater

Seriously, rarely anybody else is discussing Anubis Gate in this thread, but they are absolutely worth your time. Shout out to my new brotha mickcenary for even alerting me to the fact that they dropped a new album. Thanks again, man \m/

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE! The new Agalloch is kick ass, and while it is definitely too early to tell, it might be my second favorite of theirs (behind The Mantle, obviously)

Don't forget, the new Slough Feg (Digital Resistance) is excellent, and the new Skull Fist is rockin' as well.

On deck: Septic Flesh and High Spirits. Two bands I have the utmost faith in to deliver some of the best aural experiences of the decade (and I don't say that lightly).

I'm too drunk to remember the rest of the excellent shit coming out in the back half of the year, but shit... I don't even care anymore that the new Blind Guardian album got delayed until 2015, because without Hansi's musical metal genius, next year would probably look like a dead anorexic cat in the metal scene (yeah I know someone will quote this in sixteen months when 2015 turns out to be killer)

Not only is it a great year to be a metal fan, but it's a great time to be a part of THIS THREAD IN PARTICULAR. Sure I'm a sappy drunk (and drunk I am), but this isn't only my favorite community on GAF, but on the entire Internet. <3 you all

Just got through listening to Symphony X's album "The Odyssey," which I used to love but haven't really listened to in a couple years. Also been listening to Dream Theater's most recent album which I love.

I used to be really into that kind of metal and stopped listening for a couple years. Suddenly I want to spend some time with it again.

Can anyone recommend some albums that have come out in the past couple years that I've missed? I'm into:

Opeth
Porcupine Tree (not really metal I know)
Dream Theater
Symphony X

and any bands that fit that cross section. Been listening to the new Epica album. It's okay.

I'm not looking for brutal, screaming stuff. I like more melodic. What's come out lately?

That shit goes on my wall. Dayumn.

Anyone listen to Overkill?

From the islands to the cities, from the ports into the sea
We are strong, we will always be...
Blazing through the wreckage, burning all we see
The life we lead committed to be free...
Our union is a fortress, together we are bound
A common bound in freedom and in sound!
So raise your voices high for miles around to hear
Let them know we are drawing near...

Sup Metal-GAF, names Vocal Orgasmizzle.

I haven't listened to a good metal album in a while. I've been slipping since fall 2013 when I went back to school. Before my life was taken over by HW. I was really into High On Fire, Uncle Acid, Blood Ceremony, Electric Wizard and Groan as far as more modern bands go. You guys got any good recommendations and suggestions?

Keep in mind I hate most modern black metal, and I'm more into thrash and doom.

Haha. \m/ My pleasure, dude. Any friend of the 'Noob is a friend of mine. And seriously... How fucking good is this album? That last chorus in Breach of Faith is on an unrelenting loop in my head and it's amazing.

Ooh, new Septic? I'll give it a whirl. What's it like? I dug their last and Communion, but I find that I only really enjoy one or two songs per album. To give you an idea of my leanings, Oceans of Grey is a disgustingly good tune in my books. Brutal, yet ultra melodic and touching.

Need to check out the new Agalloch while I'm at it, too. PLEASE tell me they have a decent drummer now.

And I must refresh on the BG you hooked me up with!

So damn good.

Man, I dunno about Insomnium now. I dug STDIACD years ago, but they seem so stagnant and melodeath trope-y now. Maybe it's just me. Omnium Gatherum are the only band of that era of mine that impress me. Their latest is great.
