The Metal Thread |OT2| All Riffs, No Gifs

Yup. Metal is defined by aggression but it's also pretty nerdy. It's the reason people love Iron Maiden is because of the imagery - lots of sci-fi, fantasy, sorcery, demonology, vikings, pirates, caveman, black arts, etc. Besides prog rock, I can't think of too many genres that delve into the "fantastic" element in purely musical and lyrical terms (maybe some cheesy New Age stuff, perhaps). So yeah, there's also an antisocial element in metal that's unrelated to the "aggression" but also related to "escapism". Hair metal brought the sex, drugs and rock'n'roll - and girls - to the shows for a brief period, but today metal is right back into the male fantasy world of heroism and despair.

Power and speed metal would like a word with you :)

In don't think I ever chose heavy metal simply based on themes.

I simply just liked the sound of the music. Granted that cover art sure helped peak my curiosity.

There's a strong resemblance in the beginning. But it doesn't bother me. A lot of even the 70's and 6o's songs people praise are lifted from what came before it. It's how you use and how the song's quality is that's more important to me.

Yeah, to me the notes are somewhat similar, but I still don't see why they are rip-offs. It reminds me of the people who say that Dazed and Confused is ripped off of The Jake Holmes version, but the songs just seem COMPLETELY different in the end. They just....don't feel all that similar to each other.

I just heard this Burzum cover today for the first time -- as amazing as the original is, I like this one more. It has such a full, deep sound to it, and is sprinkled with extra atmospheric flourishes. It's incredible. Headphones are mandatory.

The keyboards sound like garbage on that version to me. Plus I think the cleaner sound loses a ton of the atosmosphere. Original is untouchable imo

Dr. Know - Wreckage in Flesh

Dr. Know put out this amazing slab of Thrash in 1988. An instance of a hardcore band releasing a more thrash influenced album and completely mastering the genre. So many gems on this album, "Slice of Life" being my favorite.

Always felt that Disciples of Power never got any love. Probably because they were somewhat obscure and the shitty production didn't help. Borderline thrash/death.

Disciples of Power - Shades of Grey
Disciplies of Power - Chains of Reason

They are fairly underrated, same as Dyoxen from Canada as well. Their debut is near perfect slab of thrash with enough technicality to burn your nut hairs off.

For some really good Tech/Thrash from the new millennium, Scenery released one hell of an album.

Scenery - Philosophy of Ages...

Really interesting pieces of beautifully constructed metal. From "Changes (part 1)" "Graves Without Names" and "Philosophy of ages" it is a good ride that I jump on when i need my head to relax.

Boris is playing a drone set at vitus tonight. My ears are gonna get murdered.

you have no idea how jealous I am that you live near/go to vitus. there's so many mick barr, colin marston, krallice, geryon, behold... the arctopus shows that I would go to if I lived right there.

Drunk MetalGuardian prefers this version, but as sober MetalGuardian today found out -- yep, the original is still king.

Here's some vague atonement for my sins

Ha, don't worry, I forgive you. Your post actually made me listen to Hvis Lyset Tar Oss today which is always enjoyable. As with a lot of people, that album was one of the first true black metal albums that made me fall in love with the genre.

I've always wanted to own it on vinyl but I refuse to fund any of Varg's crazy racism.

Lääz Rockit - Nothing$ $acred

Lääz Rockit, Bay Area Thrashers who really did not pound out pure Thrash until Annihilation Principle. That album is a near perfect display of power thrashing madness, but it was their 1991 masterpiece "Nothing$ $acred" that is their best work to me.

It is pure pounding speed, aggression and riffs with Michael Coons signature vocals, but with a bit more nails in his coffee during the recording. Songs like "Silence is a Lie" "Curiosity Kills" The Enemy Within" and the brilliant instrumental "Necropolis" show the power they achieved on this album, it really is one hell of an energetic ride.

Yup. Well said.

Yes! I love this one.

Anyway, I picked up Blut Aus Nord's latest release. From the library. I'm surprised the Public Library actually had the album.

I think a lot of reviews of that Nachtmystium album are going to be soured by all the recent rumblings about Blake Judd stealing money from fans and friends and just being a general douche bag. According to him, all that was fueled by a hard drug addiction which he claims to have kicked but he burned a lot of bridges with both fans and industry people from what I've heard.

I haven't heard the album yet but I hope it's good. I thought Silencing Machine was one of their best albums.

Actually most of what I saw was the feeling that it sounded like b-sides from Addicts, weirdly enough.
