The Metal Thread |OT2| All Riffs, No Gifs

Fuck, Unspeakable Axe Records has been killing it with savage old school death metal. I wish I had known about TrenchRot earlier. Straight to the point head banging/fistbanging death metal served up savagely in the vein of Asphyx, Hail of Bullets, Warmaster, Grave, etc.

For you old school thrash maniacs like myself, one of the more sought after thrash releases in the underground has final been given proper treatment. Cult thrashers Sindrome will release a compilation of their two demos through Century Media Records in March. This bands singer has been very hardheaded when it came to doing a reissue with divebomb and I'm glad he final said okay with somebody to get these in thrashers hands.

One of my personal favorite scenes from the USA is the Illinois scene, Chicago in particular is so strong, and Sindrome for years has offered me a kick ass jolt of ear splitting death/thrash that satisfies all the nerves of my thrash bone. I am super exited to final own a non bootleg copy of these two crushing pieces of thrash history.

This is some aggressive as fuck thrash. Glad to see this will be available again. I remember seeing the name, but never actually got to hear them.

Definitely should have had a full length, they were just as good if not better than Funeral Nation, Burnt Offering, and Abomination. Another band that deserves some love is Mortar, one of my favorites from the late 80s early 90s thrash scene.

excellent, and Century Media is certainly one of the best labels around as far as reissues go. Amazing track record. Can't wait for Spectrum of Death.

speaking of aggressive as fuck thrash reissues, The True Incubus (now known as Opprobrium) have had their monster death/thrash LP Serpent Temptation reissued via Relapse this year on CD/LP. This is the first time this version of the album has appeared on CD, as previous reissues had the vocals re-recorded. The original vocals and extremely aggressive mastering for the new edition make this one a real treat. Check it out.

Another excellent post, Incubus are one of my all time favorites, thrashers need to get this, me and a lot of my underground thrash pals have been clamoring for these for ages.

I saw the re-issues at the local record shop the other day. I glanced over them because I wasn't sure if it was the real Incubus recordings or Opprobrium re-recordings. Now I will have to go back.

I kinda got tired of listening to the same 3-4 Sonata Arctica songs on Prime Music so I ordered their collection album back from 2006, and jesus I can see why the fanbase was as big as it was 0_o.

The new Striker album is damn awesome.

As is the new Holy Grail album..

So, I just started listening to this as it came up in my recommended list on Google Play Music.

FUCKING AWESOME!

I love the modern take on some older metal styles.

I feel like I've fallen out completely from what's going on in the Metal industry. Apart from keeping up with musicians I really love with roots in Metal (like Paul Gilbert—met him in Tokyo two years ago) and listening to all the stuff I've had for years, I really don't listen all that much. I just feel like I'm not finding the kind of stuff that I like, and I've even posted in here before to ask for recommendations. I just feel like nothing sticks.

The last thing I really listened to was the last Arch Enemy album, but lacking Angela kinda brought me down. Advice? Maybe I can be pointed to a Metal site (news or blog) that posts tons of links to streaming songs or music videos of many different kinds of Metal to help me find what I'd like? I'm not sure.

The way I keep track of (new) bigger acts is by subscribing to the bigger labels on Youtube so I get notified of all the new music videos.

As for finding new, more obscure things: Spotify's "Discover" feature brought me to a ton of decent bands....

Lately I've been reading both Metal Injection and Angry Metal Guy. MI does a weekly update of new releases and AMG drops new reviews pretty much daily.

I will also toss this out there too. Pretty much a work in progress but there's an ass load of bands, old and new, to check out. Most of which has been recommended here in one way or another.

Yea this new Destroyer666 is fucking awesome. Checking out Opprobrium now. So far it's been a damn good year for new music. Still haven't listened to the new Anthrax but I don't have much enthusiasm for it either.

Edit: If anyone is interested in contributing to that spreadsheet, PM me and I will see how to get you access. At the very least I could use help filling in recommended songs and albums. Been meaning to ask for a while now but keep forgetting.

So, gave Dream Theater's latest album, "The Astonishing" a listen, and my impressions aren't positive...

Dream-Theater.jpg

Their 2013 self-titled was really dissapointing in my opinion, which left post-portnoy DT at a 50/50 split in terms of material I've liked! "A Dramatic Turn Of Events" was a pretty good album, but this album feels waaaay too bloated and full of samey sounding filler to really enjoy as a whole, shame as it starts off strong with the first of the album's instrumentals, "Dystopian Overture" and the album's first proper song, "The Gift Of Music" which are both fantastic, and it felt like the gang had gotten out of their recent rut, but then comes song after song of slow paced piano driven ballads that monologue and try to push the bland story along, with brief teasing glimpses of that complex instrumentation and lyricism that I love DT for strewn sparingly throughout. Whilst I understand it's a concept album these guys have done it way better in the past.

"Metropolis Pt2: Scenes From A Memory" was a much better concept album and that only clocked in at about 12 tracks! That album was tightly packed together and knew how to space out everything, it had slow quiet moments, ferociously fast instrumentals, and each track sounded unique and refreshing when listening to the entire thing in one sitting. It also told it's story in a much less overblown and more intriguing fashion than this over-engorged mess.

A huge portion of this album just feels too samey, and that's a shame as tracks like "Lord Nafaryus", "A New Beginning", "Moment Of Betrayal", "The Path That Divides", "Our New World" and the aforementioned "Dystopian Overture" and "The Gift of Music" show that if this album was significantly shorter, veered away from it's concept album origins, and shed a ton of it's bloat then it could've actually been a solid album. A crying shame. This, along with Ayreon's "The Theory of Everything" are prime examples of albums that try to do way too much instead of focusing on a tighter, more focused album.

This is consistently the initial reaction. Listen to it some more. 5,6,7 times. Listen to the songs you do like. I was initially turned off by all the slow piano ballads but the more I listened, the more those melodies really fit in and sounded nice. The primary theme of the album is beautiful music. I think they hit the nail on the head with the piano and acoustic guitar and choral arrangements to tell the story. And they still found a way to mix in DT flavor. Even now, I am listening to about half the tracks consistently, but more are getting added to the rotation. I find the story enjoyable for a concept album. In the end, JP wanted to tell this story, pitched the idea to the guys, and they were all on board together. Shout out to bands that have consistently done what they've wanted and been successful at it instead of becoming Noise Machines like so many others. Well done DT.

Howls of Ebb has a new LP coming out soon. LINK to the new track. I fucking love this weird ass band.

released this past Friday. Ritual Chamber, bay area old school krushing darkness. The cost for the CD/digital + postage to the USA was 11 USD flat for me earlier today. Support this project.

These are both fucking great. I've been on a bit of death metal kick lately so I'll nab these.

Also really looking forward to this Like Rats album coming out this month.

How do you guys keep track of new releases?

Metalsucks is decent, but honestly I use a piracy website and posts leaked albums on those file sharing sites. They show covers and have genre and stuff. If I see something interesting I usually check out a YouTube of a song they probably put out and then mark them down on my 2016 albums list to check out on Spotify when it actually releases.

Spotify itself fucking sucks for showing what's released. The new music section has like a fraction of the actual new music. It's only useful if you like pop or something.

I don't have a specific place to look for new music. Twitter is a good resource if you follow bands and labels you like. I also have a subscription to Decibel magazine which is a pretty good read most of the time and the reviews section keeps me up on a lot of bigger stuff that is coming out. Some metal forums like Ultimate Metal and NWN can be good to discover stuff, but I wouldn't recommend posting on them because they are full of elitist assholes. Youtube accounts (Lightfox and Atmospheric Black Metal mostly) are also good for more obscure stuff.

Years Past Matter getting a CD reissue, nice.

been posting on NWN since 2009, and your statement is accurate, but it's still good for people who want to interact with more obscure/underground entities. The main forum is essentially my release feed. Most importantly, my tastes align with most of the labels who use it for promotion.

Oh yeah, I mean if you can tolerate some of the people on there I'm sure it's a great place to hang out and get recommendations. I just prefer to lurk personally but it has been a great resource for me to find new stuff.
