The Metal Thread |OT2| All Riffs, No Gifs

This Howls of Ebb feels like a black metal version of Primus in a lot of ways. I'm really digging this a lot. Been jamming it quite a bit today now that I've uploaded to my usual player.

I checked this one out, which is $0 minimum on Bandcamp. Loved it and flipped them a few bucks. The cover reminds me a lot of something from Dark Souls and musically it's pretty good.

I'd read about Ragehammer on a site at some point in the last month and was kind of excited to hear them since I've liked both Desaster and Destroyer666. These guys sounded like they could be similar and oh yea some heavy fucking thrash right here.

Decided to check out this new album unsure what to expect. Was thinking with the band name it might be some fun hard rock, etc, but I was slightly wrong. This album really rips. Apparently the band did undergo a major musical change with their previous album 'Renatus', which I need to check out as well. This is pretty heavy progressive stuff, easiest comparison is Symphony X-ish stuff going on here.

Dynazty - Titanic Mass
Dynazty - Starlight (from the Renatus album)

Ragehammer is soooooo fucking dope.

Between the new Ragehammer, Desaster, and D666, I have been on a huge black/thrash kick. Aura Noir as well. All 3 of the new albums absolutely slay.

Currently writing my BA thesis, and I began listening to spotify jazz playlists. Mellow sounds, no lyrics to distract. Great. Then I had to do the next clear step. Jazz & Blues developed into metal, and so I combined my wish for nice metal with my need for less distraction and found a great instrumental metal playlist. Feels so good. Why am I posting this? Because gaf still distracts me >_>

Thanks for those links, loving Wode so I've ordered the vinyl!

I just watched a really interesting talk that Don Anderson from Agalloch gave about heavy metal, and during the talk he mentioned how he and John (Haughm) came across an album called The Dynamic Curve from a band called Sand (which they mistook for another band of the same name) and that the album was hugely influential to them when they made The Mantle. I've been listening to the album and holy shit he's not kidding. So much of The Mantle was clearly influenced by this. Tracks 1 and 2 especially. Give it a listen if you're an Agalloch fan and are interested in hearing where a lot of the ideas in The Mantle came from.

Splurged and bought some front row seats to Dream Theater The Astonishing concert next month. Since I actually really enjoy the album it should be a good show.

It is imperative that if the FF Demanufacture tour is happening anywhere remotely close to you that you go. Trust me on this.

That is all.

Just saw them tonight and it was legit. Unfortunately they had their bus broke down on the way to the show so they didn't have all their merch and they cut their set about 3 songs short, but they sounded excellent. Soilwork was great too.

I went last weekend it was fantastic. The light show is insane, the animations were cheesy but it felt crazy cause we dropped a tab each.

JP was a beast as usual. Mangini was really good too, last time I saw them portnoy was in the band

Huh? I'm guessing they would expect to... not get assaulted randomly by extremists at airports?

Sorry that came out wrong. Given how stupid and prevalent Religious extremists can be, I'm not too surprised that this happened, sadly.

Of course, the right thing that should have happened is....not getting assaulted randomly, but eh the world isn't perfect. Either way, fuck 'em.

Bought the 2005 Bruce Dickinson solo album "Tyranny of Souls". Love it.

On a different note, I need to start monitoring this thread again, I've discovered so much great music through it. Y'all are the best. <3

I remember that album being such a letdown back when it was released. The songs lack everything that made Chemical Wedding and Accident of Birth brilliant.

I'm ... really liking Agoraphobic Nosebleed's Arc EP. I wasn't expecting to hear a doom/sludge release from them, but here we are. The lyrical content is really serious and intense, too. Kat's vocals are perfect and devastating.

I love ANB but I think this release is trash. There's experimentation and then there's using a band name for something unrelated. If you want to hear Kat's vocals in a superior doom band check out her old project Salome

Salome - Master Failure

Well, they're releasing a series of EPs that explore each of their influences, which I think is pretty cool. I'm aware of her old band, but honestly, I really dig the ANb release and its lyrical content.

They were originally supposed to all come out in 2013 but pretty much disappeared while Scott focused on Pig Destroyer. After waiting for this long (especially since they're starting to do live appearances) it's disappointing to have something so far removed from the style of the band (sonically, and lyrically). Kinda sad when their last true release was a joke Christmas album in 2011 that probably has some of their best material ever on it

The initial plan was to have Kat's be doom, Rich's be Godflesh worship, Jay's be like Gang Green/DRI, and the fourth would be whatever. With their snail's pace of releasing material it'll probably be 2018 before they finish them. It also doesn't seem like Jay is even in the band anymore, which is pretty ridiculous. Dude defined their sound and attitude. He's still listed on their Facebook but he doesn't run it anymore and hasn't done any of the live shows beyond the first MDF one

It would make sense to do EPs of their influences if it was morphed to the ANB sound, but Arc isn't. It's just stoner doom riffs with Kat. Agorapocalypse has a lot of slower, crushing, more punk oriented stuff and I was hoping it'd be more in that vein. Instead it sounds like every other band playing zzz doom, just happens to have an awesome vocalist that can't carry it on her own

Thanks for the more detailed explanation. I can understand why it would be upsetting, though in my case, I didn't have any particular expectation. I hadn't been following ANb recently so it was totally out of left field for me. I agree that they could've done something a bit more ANb with it, but as it stands, I enjoy it (in no small part due to Kat's vocals and the subject matter). I figure the Gang Green/DRI stuff will be most interesting.

Soul Intruders is fantastic, Navigate the Seas of the Sun and River of No Return are other standouts on that release

Thank you for this, really dig their album!
P.S. Wasn't it released in 2014 (at least that's what Spotify shows)?

You're welcome and yes, it seems to have been! The new release of the album is with a record label (Shadow Kingdom) and not a strictly independent affair.

I'm also really liking the new Diamond Head album, really has some of that classic sound and the new singer can sound a lot like Sean Harris when he wants.
