The Metro Exodus Ultimatum

I was actually pretty interested in Metro Exodus but then they made the story all about fighting some twisted religious group. Can the angsty teens mad at their parents for taking them to church please grow up?

The Metro 2033 book, the metro is split between zones of religious and political nutjobs. I haven't read 2034 yet so I don't know if things carry on in that vain.

Man, fuck stores anyway. I want my good old physical times back... I don't want to have so many accounts for all those stores (that includes Steam, which is crappy as well, IMHO). GoG is the only one that is remotely bearable because I can just store the install files on some HDD and install as I like without having to log in to some shit.

When this "streaming future" is coming, I'm out. And yes, this is probably an "old man yells at cloud" post.

First they pull the rug out from fans with timed exclusive bullshit and then threatens to not release next game in franchise on their choice of platform if it fails? That is pretty fucking low, even in an era where scumbaggery is the new norm. I was interested in the console version of Exodus but reading shit like this I won´t even bother.

This is a bluff. They're trying to scare consumers into buying the game on the Epic Store, so they don't have to take responsibility for their own fuck-up.

Well I bought the first 2 games (both original and redux) for 5 dollars on steam sales. I guess I can wait until its 5 dollars on steam sometime next year.

If that's enough then good for them, if not, oh well.

Steam users right now:

No because can still play on pc hardware. It be like boycotting a console game because it is exclusive to Walmart and wanted to get from Amazon.

No, its more like not buying an album on iTunes because your existing library is on Google Play, but Apple moneyhatted it as an exclusive.

Then why the fuck did you make your game launch on an exclusive store? It's like they made it for it to fail so they don't release their next game. This is stupid..

From the thread title I thought this would be a movie starring Matt Damon.

Don't think such an ultimatum would have the desired effect. More like pouring gasoline over a fire.

Lol so much ignorance here. There's even a post stating the parent company made the decision, which was obvious anyways as devs rarely have that kind of power.

Blame the suits from the publisher not the hardworking artists from the devs.

This has been the worst week in my over 30 years as a PC gamer. I've never been more disgusted by the so-called 'fans' of the platform, and I'm really tired at this point. PC gaming isn't being destroyed by greedy publishers, it is being destroyed by the fans.

And I don't give a fuck how irate and upset that makes people. Between the drama around Metro Exodus and Ace Combat, I'm just so sick of the whinging, and the complaining, and the brigading, and the review bombing, and the hostility, and the aggression. Maybe it's 'gaming communities' in general, but PC gaming - whether here, or Resetera, or Reddit - seems to be followed by his ceaseless, unending trail of drama and aggression, and I don't know how much more of it I can stand to listen to.

Oh, I'm sure this post is going to get plenty of 'LOL why don't you fuck off back to consoles then' or some such nonsense. And, sure. Maybe I will. I'm actually ENVIOUS of PS4, Xbox and Switch communities at this point. They just don't have anywhere near this level of rage and drama. I peek into threads, or into the console subreddits, and they are discussing games. There isn't the same kind of ceaseless war being waged against this week's target.

So, yeah. Watching all of this has been really sad, and frankly, I get why that Metro developer would feel that way. Fuck this bullshit. You know, I remember when PC gaming was an enthusiast space, not dissimilar to electronics enthusiasts or role players, and people were generally nerdy and friendly. It's not like that now. There's been a massive shift in the audience, and it now seems completely overrun with hysterical, hyper-aggressive tools of the /r/pcmasterrace variety.

I'm probably ranting. But, after the last week or so, I'm increasingly feeling like this shit just isn't fun anymore.

Not that I like the attitude and stance that guy is taking, but for the sake of transparency I think you should include this quote as well

"Of course, this is the opinion of only one developer and not of the entire studio or the publisher, however it shows how nervous some of 4A Games' developers actually are. And, to be honest, we all know that the publisher actually makes the final decision. If the publisher wants to release a game on the PC, the developers will either have to develop it or let another team handle that version. "
This. So much this.
There is no weight behind this dev's statement. If this was coming from Prof or another founder you should actually care.

As mentioned by others, this dev perhaps feels threatened by the ill will that some misguided people are directing specifically at 4A. (Misguided as the decision seems to have been made by Deep Silver/Koch_Media)
I don't entirely blame the dev, but good devs don't often make good PR reps. Either way it unfortunately adds more fuel to the fire of this whole clusterfuck.

Seems to me as if the devs got shafted hard by Koch Media and Epic, but instead of blaming this mess on the incompetence of their own publishers, they point fingers at their own customers. Even in the infinite possibilities of the multiverse, there is no scenario where this could have played out in their favor.

1. If you think consoles don't have drama you're mistaken, theres constant bitching about exclusives and there's always the new outrage, either against EA or Fallout 76 or wtv.

2.Do you think consumer should just stop bitching instead? Stop bullying the poor multi billion dollar companies? Those poor guys with their huge piles of money.

3.This franchise only took off because of PC gaming, giving them a middle finger a few year later is pretty shitty.

1. There is absolutely nothing even remotely on the level of the drama surrounding PC gaming right now. Nothing. There is absolutely no comparison.

2. Yes. I do. Consumers should just stop bitching instead. You don't want to buy the game on the launcher? Fine. Don't buy it then. This isn't about people not wanting to buy the game because they don't like Epic. It's about the anger, the brigading, the downvoting, the hostility, and the relentless trail of whinging and anger that is following every fucking major PC gaming release right now. So, yeah. I think 'consumers' should shut the fuck up for once. Absolutely.

3. There is a PC release. By all reports, it'll be a polished and accomplished one. It's just on a store that you don't want to buy from. So, don't buy it. The argument seems to be 'ALL GAMES IN PERPETUITY MUST BE ON STEAM OR ANYTHING THAT ANYONE CAN THINK UP TO HURT THE PUBLISHER/DEVELOPER IS COMPLETELY JUSTIFIED'. It's just utter fucking lunacy. Again, see point #2.

We don't know how much Epic paid them, but they probably did the math. I don't think they expected the backlash to be this huge, and know they're concerned.

I enjoyed both games so far, but if they think I'm so weak-willed that they can guilt trip me into supporting Epic's shitty business practices, they are sorely mistaken. I might buy it at discount in 2020 when it inevitably releases in a Steam sale. But if they keep going like that, I'll probably end up not buying this game at all out of pure principle.
what are epics shitty business practices?

So, yeah. I think 'consumers' should shut the fuck up for once. Absolutely.

Exactly. Thank you.

This is EXACTLY the kind of behaviour I'm talking about. You couldn't have given me a more compelling argument if I'd asked.

Posts like this - and not just the content, but the sheer volume of them - are exactly what I'm saying. Nobody can have a rational conversation anymore in this stupid, imbecilic, juvenile 'community', and the Ace Combat/Metro dramas have really brought all of that bile to the surface. I posted a pretty civil, reasonably subdued post about how miserable and unenthusiastic about PC gaming these endless dramas are making me. And your response? The kind of joke a 10 year old would make, intended to discredit anything I've said.

And it's not just you. It's thousands and thousands like you. Reddit, NeoGAF, Resetera - they are full of them. Pages and pages and pages of drivel, just like this, spewing out of a 'community' or a 'fanbase' of PC gamers 24/7.

THAT is what I'm exhausted by. You. And everyone like you.

This has been discussed ad nauseam. Head over to the GAF contest, I've made a succinct gif for this exact reason:

I dunno dude it seems like you've gone out of your way to find and absorb the most negativity you can and it drove you off the edge. There are plenty of people simply playing and enjoying games they like.

No. I'm not. You're just behaving in a despicable and infantile way, and you don't like having that pointed out.

You are throwing a big tantrum right now because you don't like that people are justifiably annoyed by the shitty business practice and no amount of evidence presented to you will be enough to change your mind. With Metro, I've got all of them on Steam(even the "remasters"), I've enjoyed all of them. I'll just wait to play this muccchhhhh further down the road when it decides Steam is good enough again and I'll buy it on a big sale. Too bad for them, I was going to buy it on release for my buddy and I, but I'll just play other things.

I have no idea what you've said about Epic. I'm talking specifically about your reply to me - which was fairly obvious.

You're the one who has quite literally told us to "just shut the f*ck up", and you truly expect no reasoned pushback to your hyperbolic behavior?

I've never said anything about people needing to support Epic. Never said anything about anyone's dislike of the Metro Exodus situation being justified.

I'm talking, very specifically, about the scale of outrage.

But, you know what? You're right. I don't belong here with you people anymore. This brief encounter very much proves that.

You are more than welcome here, you act as if everyone is behaving as if it's the OUTRAGE Olympics, they aren't. People are giving clear, observable examples as to why it's a bad move all together and you don't like that because it doesn't fit whatever made up definition you've made for how a consumer should respond to a (poor) decision from a publisher. But hey, if you don't like the way the conversation is going you are more than welcome to go wherever you choose, by your choosing.

The actual quote, complete with janktastic English:

'But! Consider the situation deeper. Someone says that they say they crap Exodus and the previous games in the series, it will make the world better, they will put greedy developers in their place. To this I can answer that in a pinch, if all the PC players announce a boycott of the Metro, then the next metro, if it does, is definitely not on the PC. Better or worse, decide for yourself. I personally feel sorry for the loyal fans, yes. But my assessment of the work done personally by me and my friends and colleagues will not change this. I firmly know that almost everyone who pours this dirt on the net is also incapable of a bit of what we have done and hopefully do more. And that means they have no idea what they are talking about.'

It sounds to me like him expressing that low sales would inevitably mean they don't put the next one on PC. Understandable and probably not as malicious as it sounds in the article.

Unfortunately nothing about this situation is good. It's totally understandable why people want to boycott the game - Epic Launcher isn't better than Steam at the moment.

Not seeing very large scale outrage. Certainly nothing remotely close to "worst week in last 30 years" let alone the last 30 weeks... or maybe even days.

The translation is terrible but they seem to be following the recent trend if making a bad decision and then blaming gamers for the consequences of it. I wish them the best of luck with that decision.

Throws a temper tantrum and then denies it, you funny. Also you're wrong, consoles do have their own problems. Tomb Raider 1 year exclusivity says hi.

To think I wanted to buy this game to push my rig. There are plenty of others. I bought the other 2 on Steam and enjoyed them thoroughly. Now we are getting bullshit from 4A and it's off putting.

1.Rig now? Sure. But you must have not been around during the battlefront loot box outrage, you're trying to spin it as if only pc gamers get upset at devolopers and publisher.

2.Well we'll just have agree to disagree. Consumer can and should absolutely bitch to these richt gigantic corporations. I'd feel a bit diferent if this was an indie game or something, even though epic business pratices would still be shitty.

3.No,the argument is the game was on steam, the game got free publicity on steam, and 2 weeks prior to launch they took it off steam because epic threw money at them. Steam doesn't prevent publishers from having their games in other stores, epic is doing exactly that. If they simply made the game available on epic aswell nobody would care.

I must be out of it as I'm not particular bothered about all this, if my games on steam it's on steam if it's on gog its on gog and if it's on origin it's.. Lol who am I kidding I don't use that shit.

Epics store does not offend me, it's alright.

I purchased Metro Exodos on Steam in the last day it was available there... but I'm almost canceling my Steam preorder. Starting to get fed up with these developers and there ultimatums.
They are free to make any exclusive deal they want. Let the game be exclusive to Epic. I'm sure they got well paid... but for God's sake, don't whine afterwards if sales tank because of that stupid decision.

Does this marketing tactic ever work?

At least it's not as bad as when publishers release a spinoff that no one wants and says if you don't buy it you won't get the true sequel everyone is asking for.

If they simply made the game available on epic aswell nobody would care.

But then nobody would have bought the game on their store. Epic's timed exclusive scheme is basically an admission that they have basically no confidence in their product and that their storefront is vastly inferior to Steam.

1. I'm sorry but either you are blind or you are lying to yourself

2. Why should people stop. Nothing you listed actually harms anyone. Mean tweets, and downvotes....so what? I've never seen this attitude when it comes to relentlss praise, but god forbid someone have a negative opinion about a bad thing.

3. The argument is Epic store is woefully under developed compared to Steam, and considering that this game was selling itself on the steam store just a week ago, people had expectations. If you don't want to sell games to steam, than don't put them o steam, don't market them on steam, and at the last moment pull a bait and switch.

And while youre at it maybe actually build up the Epic Store to compete with Steam with features.
