This has been the worst week in my over 30 years as a PC gamer. I've never been more disgusted by the so-called 'fans' of the platform, and I'm really tired at this point. PC gaming isn't being destroyed by greedy publishers, it is being destroyed by the fans.
And I don't give a fuck how irate and upset that makes people. Between the drama around Metro Exodus and Ace Combat, I'm just so sick of the whinging, and the complaining, and the brigading, and the review bombing, and the hostility, and the aggression. Maybe it's 'gaming communities' in general, but PC gaming - whether here, or Resetera, or Reddit - seems to be followed by his ceaseless, unending trail of drama and aggression, and I don't know how much more of it I can stand to listen to.
Oh, I'm sure this post is going to get plenty of 'LOL why don't you fuck off back to consoles then' or some such nonsense. And, sure. Maybe I will. I'm actually ENVIOUS of PS4, Xbox and Switch communities at this point. They just don't have anywhere near this level of rage and drama. I peek into threads, or into the console subreddits, and they are discussing games. There isn't the same kind of ceaseless war being waged against this week's target.
So, yeah. Watching all of this has been really sad, and frankly, I get why that Metro developer would feel that way. Fuck this bullshit. You know, I remember when PC gaming was an enthusiast space, not dissimilar to electronics enthusiasts or role players, and people were generally nerdy and friendly. It's not like that now. There's been a massive shift in the audience, and it now seems completely overrun with hysterical, hyper-aggressive tools of the /r/pcmasterrace variety.
I'm probably ranting. But, after the last week or so, I'm increasingly feeling like this shit just isn't fun anymore.
