The most badass game cover ever

Your thread made me think of something I have always wanted in a collector's edition; make the front cover an LED screen and have an active animation on it. Have a switch to turn it off and on and have it run on a watch battery. If Bloodborne had a cover like that where it goes from the guy standing there to doing a visceral attack, all in HD like a sign on the strip in Las Vegas or Tokyo, I would drop mad money on it.

Didn't they reuse this exact same image for a sequel?
You're sort of right. They used the same image for both Mobile Light Force (PS1 game) and Mobile Light Force 2 (PS2 game).

However, neither one was a sequel. They were two unrelated Japanese shmups by different developers. They came out years apart but were released simultaneously in the west to create an "instant franchise". (The game that became "MLF" did have a sequel, but that's not the game that was titled "MLF 2".)

Real Bout Fatal Fury

Doom is the first most badass cover that comes to mind:

This was the cover for On-Line's (which become Sierra on-line) softporn adventure game in 1981.

On the far right? That's none other then Roberta Williams, co founder of Sierra and developer of King's Quest.

Every time I went to Blockbuster on a Friday night, I would walk past this game and wonder, "What poor bastard is going to have his mom check this out for them?" You know some kid's weekend got wrecked when his mom surprised him with that.

"CHROME! CHROME EVERYTHING!" he said, erection tenting his trousers with vicious tenacity. "I desire all things spikes and chrome! My battlecars will be the the finest of all the lands and you shall all feel my wrath!"

"Quick I want you to print out this stock photo of a streetwise business man and glue him to this concept art. What do you mean it doesn't make sense? This is the 90's! We're all too busy doing heroin to put effort in! Ah fuck it just ship the game already".

Part of seeing all these badass covers is going through now defunct publishers catelogues, discovering many awesome games I've never heard of and falling completely in love again with how awesome/stupid videogames are.

Still holding out hope it's inxile's next kickstarter!

I love how well coloured, shaded and detailed the artist went to, but did nothing with the static poses of each person. It's as if the dragon and the naked people are fighitng with interpretive dance. The dragon also looks visibly bored.

Expected to see lots from the 8-bit era and thread doesn't disappoint. A few more picks:

It's Arnie fused with Aliens, which as a schoolkid doesn't get more badass than that.

Wizards and stuff were also really cool back then:

this creepy shit from 1983

Now this appeals a lot to my rather more warped tastes as an adult. Must check it out!

not enough love for this.. can't believe it took til the third page

look at how hard that guy on the left is, he's fighting against stormtroopers, apes, jaguars and satan without a shirt or belt

I was sad to beat the game and find out you don't ever fight the goat. You just blow him up in the end cut scene. Apparently he's some evil machine or something. You do fight storm troopers and apes.

Great game with awesome 80s synth spy music by the streets of rage guy (yuzo koshiro?) btw.

Please, get your cover art on my level.
