Since someone has already mentioned 2001 my vote goes to Casino. Okay the opening contains a glaring error with a dummy (Still can't believe Scorsese and Thelma, didn't pick it up) but still mix of Mathaus Passion blaring through the fantastic opening credits and the intercut voice-over narration by both De Niro and Pecsi. Absolutely fantastic, along with a beautiful sweeping shot over Vegas.

No, Lieutenant.

Your men are already dead.
Flawless victory. Every jaw hit the floor as the scene unfolded.

EDIT: okay, maybe I have to go with Casino. :lol

You can see it in the link I posted, but when De Niro's car explodes in the opening, you can clearly see the switch from live actor to dummy, it only appears for a second by the way the scene cuts is rather jarring.

I like Gladiator. I really do. It's a damn fine action movie with great heroes and villains and battles and blood but it's cloying to call it "epic." The idea of it being epic was just a ploy by the marketers aiming for an Oscar. After that movies started advertising themselves as "epic," and the word became a mutilated corpse of it's former meaning.

For God's sake one of those parody movie things was named "Epic Movie."

This. Can't really see it any other way. The image of trinity doing the kung fu in the air while the camera panned around her will always be remembered, if not always copied.

I think I read somewhere that the W.Brothers couldn't get all the funding they needed for the film, so they filmed this scene first, showed it to the higher ups, and the suits were so impressed that they gave more money.

CLOSE second? Dawn of the Dead (1978). The apartment complex..

"Shoot it man..shoot it man...shoot it in the head"....:D

I also really like Terminator 2.

Haven't seen it posted in here but the beginning of Dawn of the Dead (2004) is pretty furious and I always remember it as an epic opening, considering the very genre of the movie.

some of you are confusing opening act to any scene that was awesome haha

but it has to be matrix

i mean seriously..think when you first saw that in theaters...wtf own

Mirrors had a pretty great first scene.

Doesn't really qualify for this thread, but was a great opening. Same with that shitty GHOST SHIP movie.

Since its obvious people aren't actually talking about epic openings and that T2 has already been mentioned, I'm going to go ahead and saw Lethal Weapon's Jingle Bell hooker-body-slam on the car.

There are 'acts' and 'scenes' being mentioned here.

My favourite opening act is that for Goodfellas: I love seeing how stuff operates behind the scenes.

Despite the confusion, I just gotta mention my favourite opening scene:

The opening of The Two Towers was fantastic. The helicopter shot of the mountains, and then zooming in to realise that under there was Moria. Then seeing clips of FotR from a different angle. Following Gandalf down and realising that it was a damn huge cavern they were in. Gandalf kicking ass.

Awesome.

Visiting a cemetery is very epic.
I love how everyone forgets that this is the opening to that movie :lol

I really like the opening to X-Men 2. I loved it at the time because they really nailed Nightcrawler's teleport effect and got pretty creative with it.
