The Most Influential Game of the Noughties / Decade?

I honestly don't see Wii Sports as that influential in the long run. Certainly not up their with GTA 3 or Halo. I think posters saying Wii Sports are letting hate cloud their vision.

Influence is not just measured in pushing tech, but also in adjusting social norms. The success of Wii Sports makes more women and old people 'gamers' than before. This helps deflate future Jack Thompsons.

For all Action games to follow.
This is my choice too. 3D action was dead before DMC came along.

yeah, GTA3 and Halo by a country-mile, with Resident Evil 4 and Half-Life 2 also playing a pretty huge role.

Halo - As has been stated, set a standard for console FPS.

Gears - Underrated franchise that has set the standard this gen for third person shooters, roady running and cover system have been huge parts of this gen because of this game.

GTA3 - Highly influential on sandbox games.

WoW - Set the standard for being a nerd this gen.
not kidding

Guitar Hero - Influence on music games.

GOD OF WAR - Use of QTE in Gameplay(shares that with Resident Evil 4)
I don't really understand how it shares when RE4 came out first, and did it better. :lol

I'd definitely have to go with GeoWars being the absolute most influential for the decade. It really started allot of the "Casual" gaming, Easy to play/Hard to master, Indie style/Small Budget, Digital Download, etc. It was definitely that merger game between Flash/Internet(Cellphone too), To Gaming. I guess it kinda really help redraw that line.

1. GTA3
2. Halo
3. Wii Sports
4. Resident Evil 4
5. Gears of War
6. World of Warcraft
7. Guitar Hero
8. Devil May Cry
9. Call of Duty 4
10. Half Life 2
11. God of War

I think all these lists are pretty much coming down to this handful, in that rough order. I don't think any game has had as much influence across pretty much every genre as GTA3 had.

Halo, by a street.

Followed by Grand Theft Auto 3.

For those answering Wii sports, that answer is wrong. Wii Sports is a by product of the console is was designed for. It's the WII that's influential, not Wii Sports.

Apart from what's already been said I would add Geometry Wars.

reason: If it wasn't for this little game I don't think XBLA would've caught on the way it did. It showed that you don't need a budget of $20m to compete on the latest hardware opening the flood gates for low budget original ideas and classic remakes on consoles.

Horse armor, anyone?
God, I'd like that Oblivion was so successful. That way we would ged only "cosmetic" DLCs, not removing/locking actual content from disc itself.

Edit: Also, as my imagination is lacking, why people post RE4 here?
If I had to add some 3rd persong action game, my pick would be Max Payne, Sure, it was all thanks to Matrix, but it was Max who showed how it should be implemented in the games.

we just had this thread a couple of weeks ago, anyway..

Halo CE by a land slide. It saved the Xbox and changed the industry. MW2 would not exist without Halo. Can anyone name a modern day action game without regenerating health, 2 weapon slots, instant kill melee's from behind, dedicated button for grenades? it basically created the blueprint for all action games. FPS have become the biggest genre in the industry, all because of Halo

GTA 3 is also huge. RE4 is also worth a mention.

GTA 3 - Created the 3D open world sandbox genre
Halo - Innovated and popularized the FPS genre on consoles
World of Warcraft - MMORPG for the masses
Guitar Hero - The first music game with good music
The Sims - Gaming for non-gamers

I'm surprised Brain Training hasn't been mentioned yet, as I think that's probably the game that started the whole "personal improvement games" thing.

But Halo's influence is a by product of the fact that it was designed for a console. Without Wii Sports, the Wii would not have been influential, I'm not sure why people refuse to acknowledge this.
