The Most Pirated Games Of 2009

Kind of useless without any private tracker data.

Oh, it's even worse. You have to count in the games shared on private trackers and download services as rapdishare, too.

Definitely. Especially DDL sites like Rapidshare, but I ain't ruling out private trackers being more either because the existence of them are unknown to many.

Pretty surprised by the piracy rates on the consoles aswell, for all the PC piracy talk adding up the 360 and Wii it's really not that huge a jump.

glorious pc gaming master race

god damn, did capcom even sell 1 single copy of street fighter 4 pc version?

doesn't take into account binary newsgroups.

yeah,i guess you can triple these numbers with rapidshare/megaupload downloads

PS3 still no mans land then?

PS3 BD games have been dumped online, well blurays in general. But PS3 games, although successfully dumped, havent been successfully cracked. Meaning that if one day PS3 is hacked, those PS3 games that are on the net being distributed atm, wont run since they need to be hacked too. LOL at the some fools DLing in hopes they are ready for the future!!

Also it has been noted that PS3 itself is a beast to crack thanx to its 7th SPU or something. That thing is constantly checking that the system and games are legit even while playing a game. Mad props to Sony. Pirates can suck some cock after they killed PSP sales.

Yeah, means the game is so crap that must be played/tested but not buyed.
In that case, renting should be done. "Sampling via free download" is still piracy, isn't it?

Serious question here folks. I consider it still piracy, what about you?

Sure no money goes to the devs when you rent a game at the store, but still...

I feel really bad for those who only experienced MW2's single player campaign. The loss of brain cells will never make up for any monies these wretched souls may have saved.

just in case, I'm not condoning piracy, just making fun of how terrible that campaign was

And that's just public Torrent trackers. No mention of Private trackers, Usenet, or filehosting sites.

edit: beaten by various people

You say that like the multiplayer doesn't shorten your lifespan and shit on your soul.

Wow. Awesome. Tell that to the 50+ plus dudes coding away for 2 years. Fuck you sir.
Yeah, I'm sure fucking Infinity Ward and Activision are just hurting for cash right now.

no one cares if you download... only if you distribute
Seeing as these are torrent stats, every single one of those people were distributing as well.

I bet every one of those was a missed sale opportunity!
Yeah, I will never understand why some people think if Internet piracy magically disappeared tomorrow, every single person who did it would all of the sudden steal from brick and mortar stores or their friends.

Hey, even as insanely bugged out and unbalanced as that multiplayer is it still has some charm to it. That single player, though...*shivers*

I don't think Nintendo switching to Blu-Ray would really make that big of a difference if their next system is as easy to hack as the Wii is. I'm betting a work around would be found in weeks for any Blu-Ray issues if the PS3 was as open as the Wii is.

As stated earlier, there are Blu ray dumps of many PS3 games out there. Sony just made damn sure that the PS3 wasn't going to be the PSP deux. Hell, Microsoft main issue what with the firmware on their disc drives as far as piracy was concerned. It wasn't until recently that homebrew even appear on the 360, unlike the original xbox.

I can't believe people pirated that much HotD Overkill. This game is always bargain priced everytime I see it in store (15-20$)... now I know why.

Oh please you know damn well what he meant. Pirating sucks but IW and Activision screwed their consumers this year.

You are wrongly assuming 1 download = 1 person.

Speevy said:
What I found surprising is that despite how much bigger the Wii userbase is, and how much easier the Wii is to pirate, 360 piracy still towers over it.

Technical inclination wins out?
Wii's top 5 has higher numbers than 360's. Not by much, but more.

Fredescu said:
From where I'm looking, the Wii numbers edge out the 360 numbers. Not by much, but Wii still wins. You're not comparing Wii to PC are you?

Yeah, read the 360 list once but when I went back to it, I only read the MW2 from the PC list and stopped. :lol

Yeah but that actually works in his favor.

A lot of colleges run off Direct Connect pirating networks now, meaning that 1 download introduced into the system can go to well over 100 people.

And again, we're not even counting RapidShare, MegaUpload, or Private Trackers here.

Hahahaha People are still using Direct Connect? Holy 2003, Batman :lol

You can still share games from PSN with other people, should count those also.

Hey, Jack Tretton said it was ok so it's ok.

No they didn't. They were very open about their policies. Not liking their policies and design decisions doesn't give you the right to steal.
Yeah and you don't piss down someone's back and call it rain.

I'm glad MW2 was so heavily pirated on the PC.

Not to be a junior mod, but advocating privacy regardless of reason should bring down the ban hammer.

Those numbers are 'very disappointing'.

For real? The ps3 has one processing unit dedicated to control piracy? Way to go sony:lol

That's irrelevant. Regardless of how rich the company is, they put a product out for sale, they worked hard on it. They don't deserve to have their product stolen. I realize you're not defending piracy (at least I hope not), but that's a ridiculous argument.

rezuth said:

Let's not start this. I've game-shared. I'm not banned. You probably want to leave it at that.

Still, I find it a loose correlated assumption in the reverse, that since it's not 1:1 ratio of lost sales to piracy a good number of it isn't lost potential sales. Some people simply don't buy a game if they don't have to even if they can, like damn near everyone I work with seems to freakin' pirate despite the fact they make as much if not more than me in the IT department.

These figures are far from accurate they dont take into account sales from pirated software, newsgroups, ftp and other forms of distribution

Archie said:
I wonder if MW2 PC would have been pirated less if the dedicated server fiasco never happened.

Possible. MW1 sold like... 1 million, didn't it?

Honestly, the figures for MW2 PC do not surprise me all. It would've sold much, much better if connecting through IWnet was not forced upon those wanting to play multiplayer. Seeing it get pirated to hell and back was more or less expected. IW/Acti singled out LAN gamers, giving them no reason to buy it for multi, so that's a significant amount of potential customers lost right there.

What is surprising is the amount of downloads on 360 titles. And despite rampant piracy, the 360 version still sold way more than its PS3 equivalent.

I wouldn't say "far from accurate. " While there are other distribution methods out there, BitTorrent is the most commonly used, so this is a good representation of the current state of piracy. I would say at least 95 % of internet users who pirate do so from public BT sites. BT is what Kazaa used to be in its heyday. FTP is simply not efficient these days due to the large size of files, I doubt anyone uses it apart from those heavily involved in the distribution of pirated content (ie the uploaders themselves). Newsgroups are also a niche area, being a paid service.

Wow, I really hope Nintendo does go with BD/MINI BD next gen for its choice of optical media. This is just SICKENING, and that goes for all systems!

i dont think the most popular way of pirating on the wii is burned disks. There a a ton of launcher apps and HDDS are easier to deal with.
