Some multiplayer modes never get the respect they deserve. I'm sure I missed a bunch here, but these games come up from time to time.

I loved the Warhammer 40k: Space Marine multiplayer, but the game just wasn't big enough to survive in the long run.

I put over 500 hours into that multiplayer and had intended to play 0 minutes of it at launch.

I don't really consider "Multiplayer" in its totality a "mode".

I thought that this thread was about interesting modes within a game's multiplayer.

To answer my own definition, I would vote for the Frontier Defense mode of TitanFall 2. It is the best horde type mode I have ever played, and is a substantial improvement over the Frontier Defense mode of TitanFall 1. Unfortunately, it was not included at TitanFall 2's launch, so the game was a "no buy" for me until it was later added in.

Man, the Last of Us has some of the BEST multiplayer I've ever played. I can go back to it after months, pick it up and binge it all over again. It's so good. Heavily overlooked and I'm still mad that they didn't include it in part 2.

LOST PLANET

For those who where there back in '07, you guys know.

In short it was a team based TPS with respawn, the weapons pick-ups were on the map including mechs and special weapons made for them (that could be used on foot too but greatly limiting your movements), combining this with the awesome grappling hook the gameplay allowed you to quickly move around the (huge) maps, it was awesome and the best mode to play was a mix of capturing points (balise) which doubles as a score and gameplay mechanic, the energy being a ressource in the game that allows you to regain your life-points slowly after taking damage, serves as a power supply to operate the mechs (they drain your meter quickly) and fire laser weapons.

There was a deep learning curve and surprisingly good balance with the weapons, even on foot against a mech if you had certain weapons you could charge shot a plasma ball to eject the pilot and take his mech without damaging it for exemple, grenades could be replaced with frisbees like explosives that stick on contact and explode, one tactic I'd use was to send the disc flying across the map to a balise that was being captured by another player, wait for the disc to be near him and shoot at it to trigger the explosion, you could hang on below structures with the grappling hook, do rolls with invulnerability frames when in combat, target the head, legs to stagger the opponent, lots of neat little gameplay tricks that greatly rewarded those who were good at the game, it was impossible for a beginner or intermediate player to best a very good player, it rewarded skills.

That don't means you couldn't cheese your way to victory though, nothing stopped you from finding a mech, roam around until you found the most OP mech weapons to equip, go to a remote balise and wait 4 minutes doing nothing but collecting insane level of energy, then go berserk for 10 minutes killing everything that moves in the map, then again this could be countered with so much possibilities by the enemy team, like the green laser beam tactic said earlier, or a sniper shooting at the mech knee a few times, having found the homing laser weapon on the map etc.

Multiplayer was essentially tower defence before it became a mainstream concept. Two players had to protect their rune within their base, aided with traps and AI controlled units to slow each other down. I'm still waiting for a release or remaster on digital storefronts. Come on NightDive Studios.

The last of us multiplayer wasn't underrated or ignored im pretty sure it did well since there working on a seperate multiplayer game.

MGO2 make no mistake had it's flaw but it's a third person shooting machine when it works, great stealth game with a wealth of fantastic modes. The shooter world is focused on COD, and Battlefield but games like UC2, MGO2 were life changing. Gears and Halo are probably more well rounded, massive multiplayer. Rainbow Six is also underrated, really the Vegas series. Terrorist hunt was fun.

Out of the ones you listed, assassin's creed, mass effect, uncharted and mgs4 were my favs. I hate that naughty dog shut down the servers of the old games, or at least didn't release the multiplayer with the remasters, hate that Konami took down MGO2 servers as well. Probably my most played multiplayer game of all time. I really wish buy aware would release the multiplayer for the legendary collection. They said that if it's sold well they would think about it, well it exceeded expectations apparently so where the fuck is the multiplayer.

But in terms of actually unique experiences, that really innovated, assassin's creed. There was nothing even remotely close to it and there still isn't, I really wish they would bring it back.

Metal Gear online was some of the most fun I had playing. I think the thing that held it back was the cumbersome way you had to log in to play. Prevented a lot of people from experiencing it.

Came here to post this. I expected the worse considering bioware doesn't really do multiplayer but ended up playing it for hundreds of hours.

i almost reported this post for putting Uncharted 4 on there. Its terrible.

Uncharted 2/3 multiplayer is some of the best third person shooting online multiplayer i've played.
AC Brotherhoods multiplayer was so fun, and i can't believe Assassins Creed games just don't even have multiplayer anymore.
I never dabbled into Metal Gear Online much. But i did play the online in Snake Eater. Movement wasn't great but i had fun.

I recently bought War for Cybertron and really like it. Too bad i missed out on multiplayer. I didn't even know it had it tbh.

I played a ton of the original Saints Row multiplayer. Especially the mode where one player just had a pimp slap.

Never played Devils Third multiplayer, but it looked fun.

Didn't one of the Tenchu games have a good multiplayer?

Its easily one of the best horde mode experiences ever. most of the maps are literally impossible which for some reason made it worth trying over and over again. Fck me there is so much they could easily implement in a sequel(jet pack was barely used) but think of the upgrades to suits and weapons. Uggggh it makes no sense a license that is basically free, and we cant get another?

I also want to add votes for Bioshock 2 and Uncharted, but where is Last of Us? Is there a dev that has sort of nailed fun MP into their games when no one was expecting it?

Lost Planet 1 and 2 pvp.
Crouch nading - shooting that nade out of the air exactly when its on an enemy,
all the while grapple hooking and perfectly timing the invincibility frame window of the roll.
LP's multiplayer was an artform all to itself.

I thought AC Black Flag's multiplayer was exveptional - and I mever even played the single player campaign.

I still sometimes remember how much fun it was.

Bioshock 2, AVP 99, and Riddick. All so incredibly fun, Bioshock 2 and Riddick being HUGE surprises because the multiplayer was a LOT more fun than everyone was expecting.

But AVP 99 was SO good online. Being able to destroy light sources to mess around with other players that were marines was SO incredibly fun.

Out of those choices I picked Spies vs Mercs, a lot of fun. But my real vote goes to the Winter Express mode in Apex Legends. It's only available at X-mas sadly and it's way better than that Arenas mode they added permanently to the game.

Not sure if these count as official multiplayer, but the 4-player in 007: Nightfire is a lot of fun. That, and Resident Evil 5 has Mercenaries which is great as well

Spies vs. Mercs
MGO Online(MGS 4)
Uncharted

In order. Never played it, but heard Last of Us 1 had really good MP too.
