The Muppets |OT| - Breaking Prawn

Great, heartwarming, funny movie without all the cynicism.

Would watch again (in that 3 hour format hopefully)

Saw this with the wife and kids tonight. Everyone left happy.

What surprised me is how genuine it was. The Muppets have a very distinctive, sincere yet winking and often biting humor and they captured it perfectly. I was expecting to walk out thinking, Disney changed them.

Nope. It's an authentic Muppet move through and through. Sincere, heartwarming, nostalgic and honest, with no bullshit. One of those "they don't make them like this any more" kinds of movies. The kids loved it, my wife and I were bathed in nostalgia and laughed hard at the self-referential jokes. ("Let's travel by map!" is now a permanent part of our vocabulary.)

I lost it when Chris Cooper started rapping.

My wife and I both wanted more Beaker.

Great film. I hope it does well.

Oh man I am super excited for this film. Why does it have to start so late in Germany? Disney is the worst when it comes to international releases. :(

My only hope is that I might get a press invite...

I didn't watch The Muppets often as a kid (except for watching Muppet Treasure Island religiously), will I enjoy this movie? I assume so, given the great impressions.. But what say you GAF.

My wife and I saw this at the Cinerama in Seattle last night with some friends. One couple brought their 2 1/2 year daughter, it was her first film. She behaved perfectly and loved the film.

As for us adults who grew up on the Muppet Show and the old movies, we all enjoyed it. I remember reading early impressions talking about how the film was dumbed down with toilet humor... my thoughts on it below:

I thought the way Segal and Stoller handled the fart shoes was perfect and necessary. Fozzie wanted them in the telethon, but no one else cared nor did they think they were funny. I found this to be a great commentary on out of touch execs at Disney wanting to incorporate fart jokes into the film when it's childish and unnecessary.
My friends and I admittedly lost it when Fozzie did this. We thought it was hilllllllarious. Also, my ex's sister worked on the film. Boy does she have some amusing stories. Apparently they smoked weed like, everywhere on the set.

Guys, make sure to see this in the theater (
Or make sure you have a good surround sound system
) for that scene. Never witnessed that in a movie.

Nailed it, 100%.

So great.

I don't think AbsoluteZero watched the movie. They play the real version near the end, Kermit sings first and then the entire Muppet crew joins in. It's on the soundtrack too.

I was intentionally trying to mislead him into thinking they ruined the song and when the song played at the end of the film it would blow his goddamn mind.

I'm kind of amazed the movie is getting such a huge amount of praise. It was just kind of... lame. That's the best word I can think of to describe it. Also "dumb." There were a couple big laughs and a number of chuckles, but for the majority of the movie I had the same kind of uncomfortable, falling-just-short-of-mildly-amused reaction I'd have to a Dreamworks movie or something. Massively disappointed, especially since I was a huge fan of Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

I haven't seen the old movies since I was a kid, but man, I hope they were better than this. The show certainly was. For that matter, a bunch of the Muppet appearances on late-night TV lately were much more amusing then the movie itself.

The Toy Story short was pretty awesome, though.

Just got back from seeing this with some friends. It was consistently hilarious, though there were a few bits in the middle that I felt were a little drab/didn't grab me. Overall though it was really funny, cute, and just a great Muppet movie. I hope there's more where this came from. Also I may or may not have just went onto Amazon and downloaded the album. Ok, I did.

I loved it, I need the soundtrack now..so good.

I really liked it, so many cameos
best was Jim parsons, and whoopi Goldberg, I was like holy shit

I really hope that this begins a resurgence for the muppets.

Also the

just got back.

rainbow connection
ruined me.

Seriously me too. In fact I thought everything they did regarding the more serious side of the muppets was as good as it gets. The humor on the other hand was solid, but not spectacular. The movie definitely had it's heart in the right place, and don't get me wrong I loved it, but some of the bits were surprisingly unfunny.

Just saw it with my dad, man that was wonderful. Captured the feeling and spirit of the Muppets just like the old show and movies. My only complaint is that I wanted more Rowlf, but his scene after the montage was HILARIOUS.

Almost got a little choked up during the "Photos in my Mind" song, and it really was just spectacular seeing The Muppet Show on the big screen, that and the final song were kind of awe-inspiring for me. The music was fantastic.

Just a really good movie that made me really happy inside to watch. Well done to all involved, and I really really hope we get more Muppets from now on.

I saw this movie today at a theater that looked just like the old Muppet Show theater. It really brought me back to my childhood. They did a great job of having enough jokes for adults while also being a kids movie. I really hope they are able to do more Muppet movies soon!

There is nothing to gain by trying to criticize The Muppets. It’s a fool’s errand. Trying to find fault with The Muppets is like scaling a skyscraper made of ice, like swimming up Niagara. I’m sure it’s possible, but anyone that puts in enough effort to find something wrong with The Muppets is probably a spectacularly unpleasant person to be around. It’s not a perfect movie, but the sum of its parts is more than perfect: It’s sublime, capable of bringing the kind of joy they sing about in holiday songs. It won’t kill cynicism; it will transform it into bliss. It will melt the black off of coal. It doesn’t matter how many terrible films you’ve seen in your lifetime, The Muppets is a freight train of emotion and it will make you believe in the magic of movies again.

Went out with friends for our annual Thanksgiving night movie to see this. Positively fantastic. The third greatest gift is one of my favorite sayings now. A quite pan across
the picture of Jim Henson
got me both a bit nostalgic and sad. Laughed constantly. Walter's optimism and Kermit's attitude for the beginning of the movie was perfect for what the last decade or so felt like. At the end of the movie, it felt like the Muppet Show should be making an appearance by January.

Also, lizard wizard.

It was a great movie. It was a huge dose of nostalgia for me personally. I was very happy that the Muppets were not "modernized" for this movie. It is very much a traditional Muppet movie in every way. There were lots of songs and the core Muppet values were front and center. My kids really enjoyed it, but I was surprised at how much I laughed out loud from beginning to end. It dipped a tad here and there, but overall it was a fantastic ride. I really enjoyed the music numbers. My favorite was one where Kermit sings about the past while looking at paintings of old friends that was pretty early in the film called "pictures in my head". It was very touching.

9/10 film.

When I got home, I played more Zelda. What a weird, nostalgia filled day!

Watched the Muppets as a child but was never as fanatical about them as some of my friends. Went to see the movie last night out of boredom with some folks and damn if I haven't spent half the day looking up old Muppets videos on youtube.

I really loved the music and was a super fan of Bret McKenzie and FOTC but I was almost a little distracted by how similar the songs he wrote are to some FOTC music. In particular, I felt like
a lot of the lyrics/presentation/music to "Man or Muppet" reminded me of "I'm Not Crying" from FOTC - especially (bear with me because I know nothing about music terms) the similar stoppage in music and then the big "I'M A MANNNNNN!" line/"I'M NOT CRYYYYYING" line.

Saw it yesterday afternoon, almost choked up right at the beginning when Kermit was reminiscing (
and the painting's came alive
). Fantastic film, can't wait for the blu/extended/deleted scenes.

So happy
Mana Mana
was in there too :)

Saw it tonight with my girlfriend and my parents. We all loved it, such a feel good movie. It definitely retained that Muppets feeling.
I came so close to crying when Rainbow Connection started towards the end.

Spoilers about cameos:
Mickey Rourke is VERY easy to miss since they only show him looking over as the car comes out on the beach, Jim Krasinski is only in a few scenes and never speaks, and Neil Patrick Harris never says anything and is barely on the screen

Not really...:
NPH looks at the guy with him and asks how he didn't get a bigger part in this.

I'll add myself to the "busted up after that scene" list. Such a great movie, and great to let my daughter see real muppets action. The best part... as we walked out she named her two favourites... and they were the same ones I had at her age, Fozzie and Animal. That excludes Beaker, but we didn't really see enough of him in the movie for her to feel that way.

Just got in from seeing this with my wife, and holy crap I haven't laughed so hard at a movie in a long time.
Were would you rank this movie in the other Muppet movies. Better than the first?

My wife and I were ranking the Muppet Movies as we were driving home:

1. The Muppet Christmas Carol (We watch it every year)
2. The Muppets (Though we admit it might just be because the humor isn't as outdated)
3. The Great Muppet Caper
4. The Muppets Take Manhatten
5. The Muppet Movie (I've only seen this one once, though, and I think I was five)
6. Muppets in Space
7. Muppet Treasure Island
8. The Muppets Wizard of Oz (We like to pretend this one never happened.)

You really come to appreciate at how talented Jim Henson was and the people that are in charge of The Muppets now. They really do take on a life of their own.

Don't include Wizard of Oz because it wasn't theatrically released.

Hell if you're going to include it you need to find a place for those terrible Christmas movies released in the last 4 or 5 years.

Whenever they appear on talk shows, daytime or late night, it's easy to forget that just a puppet, they tend to feel like living breathing people.
