The NA Etrian Odyssey 4 demo is out!

Aww, you can't use the circle pad to move? Gotta use the D-pad? I'm getting used to it, but I'm meh about it. I don't like the D-pad placement on the system.

Music is cool but the sound quality sounds a little... I don't know, not CD quality. I'm wearing good headphones and have the BGM set to max, but I'm not really feeling it. It's like the music is compressed or something, like how those Tales of games sound subpar compared to other games from Sakuraba (except the CDs don't sound better either, except for cutscene music).

The music sounds better on Youtube, basically.

I'm thinking I'll just skip the game and buy the OST. I have Fire Emblem right now and I wanna try out that Sting game NISA's putting on PSN/PSP next week and I don't think the music for EO 4 sounds as good in-game as it does on the soundtrack, and music is the thing that stands out to me the most.

I might change my mind later, but right now, I'm leaning on pass.

It says right in the digital manual that the image and sound quality for the full game will be a lot better.

I hope the sound/song for completing a quest (when reporting it in the "bar") isn't cut so short and abruptly in the full game. I deeply associate that little ditty in previous games with a feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction, and the cut off in the demo makes me feel jerked around and weird.

Bummed that I've done nearly everything in the demo! (Haven't gotten Culantro to finish that one quest...) I guess it's back to playing EOIII for now.

Good god, why did I play this? The wait. :(

It's a goddamn excellent demo, though, and has me completely jazzed to play EO4 now. All the improvements, big and little (holy shit, taunt works now!) over previous games are marvelous and I can't wait to dig in to the full game. Kudos to Atlus for putting together such a solid demo.

AND it picks up the save, even! Atlus got that right when Fire Emblem didn't! <3

Just wondering, are the QR codes useable in the full game? Or are they demo only?

QR codes will work in the full game.

Also, as I understand you will be able to share your guild car be generating a QR code, but I don't know what purpose this serves. I don't think you can trade items or characters by generating QR codes, but I could be wrong.

It seems nice, since most North Americas are not really able to use street pass.

Thanks. I think the QR codes are so that you can trade you guild cards online.

Damn, Ive been playing the demo for days now and I've basically reset most of my characters skills and also have each class, trying out different builds and party combinations. I ended up with a Dancer/Nightseeker/Landsknecht/Fortress/Runemaster. I've also beaten almost everything on demo with the exception of the Pink Pooka which is difficult to get.

Also, is it just me or is the Sniper a bit weak? I was expecting an Arbalist with huge focus on binds but the damage is not really that good.

Thanks. I think the QR codes are so that you can trade you guild cards online.

You can also attach a Treasure Map on the Guild Card and the person receiving it will have access to that treasure. Theres also Streetpass though Im still not sure

You will be able to exchange characters in the full game by adding them as a representative on your guild card.

I pumped 7 points into the Arm Bind skill for the archer and it still rarely ever works. I'm thinking of just getting rid of her. Anyone have a good idea of what I should replace an archer with?

My current party is a Landsknecht, Fortress, and Nightseeker in the front row, and a Medic and Archer in the back row. It kind of sucks because I ended up getting to level 10 with this party and now I want to change it. Oh well!

Alchemist. Magic >>>> Arrows

There's a cap on characters you can invite into your own guild to prevent that, I think it's like 5 past your current level.

Ok, that's cool. Will be useful for the post-game bosses, since you can now just copy a party for a boss you can't beat.

No manual? :(

isn't it with the cd ala Code of Princess?
Yeah, sounds like it (thought that came with a normal manual in addition to the artbook bit). That's some reassurance at least that Atlus isn't inherently turning their back on the manual (or included booklet really), as that'd be a shame given they're one of those that really cared.

Though I guess Soul Hackers is the real test, and admittly I guess making two manuals comes off as redundant anyway, though Nintendo's format leaves it a bit too dry and boring relative to Sony's (though theirs is just a somewhat lame PDF.)

What do 3DS digital manuals look like, are they like the horrific web interfaces that were on Wii shop/virtual console? I will take the pretty art-filled scans that come with PSX games and Tokyo Jungle over that any day.

Took a look at the Code of Princess unboxing and it seems that has a manual that this doesn't. Unless they forgot one with his copy (doubt it) that just makes what Aram said all the more disheartening: "You know we love you, that's why we do these manuals."

*4 months later he's gone and their biggest release comes without a manual*

Oh, and yeah, 3DS digital manuals are more like what Virtual Console and Wii Shop games have. A bit upgraded though, they'll put some distinct backgrounds, text, and colors in, but it's nothing on the Playstation digital manuals when they're done right.

My wife is enjoying the demo but she hasn't played a real RPG in a while. How hard and frustrating is the full game supposed to be?

The CD comes with a short book that has some character descriptions, notes from Atlus staff, a comic, and some gorgeous art. Not really an instruction manual, but it's lovely.

And now that I look back in my Twitter feed (where I originally found this out) Nich confirms it, digital manual won't leave people high & dry.

Man, I hate this push in the industry to drop manuals. Eco friendly and all that, but that impact must be mild compared to other uses of paper that no one even cares half as much for, and it's the kind of game that really does benefit from it. Maybe it'll be there in Soul Hackers since that doesn't come with an artbook-type thing anyway? :/

At least Atlus is making a great physical package by default and that artbook DOES sound good, it just sucks that one of the strongest vanguards for manuals falls, and not because of a manufacturer's policy (unless Nintendo changed that right between FE and EOIV.)

Just killed my first kangaroo. Feels good. Bring on the full game!

I've spent 16 hours with the demo....best demo I've ever played, lol.

Why even have a box that big if the only thing inside is the tiny cartridge?
Retail visibility I guess. And the fact they were designed with manuals in mind before Nintendo decided to implant digital manuals and apparently let publishers make their call on whether to include physical ones or not.

Also, I hope NichM's ban marks the beginning of an effort to weed out ALL the industry figures who take the time to interact with gamers here and answer questions about they games they work on. Who needs those guys and their stupid "humility" and "insight," am I right?
You're next, pal!

(How'd he get banned, btw?)

Am I missing out on something by not using a Dancer? My line-up is currently:

Landsknecht/Nightseeker/Fortress
Medic/Runemaster

Dancer buffs up your party, which helps A LOT in boss battles, though not so much in regular battles. The Dancer buffing skills are quite useful, so you should at least sub-class someone to Dancer later in the game.

I'm using the exact same party and enjoying it immensely. I got all the classes up to 10 in the demo, but that is my favorite set-up so far. I guess I'm not dynamic enough to move by dancer from front to rear every few turns.

It seems like you would want a Sniper or Nightseeker from the demo but not necessarily both at once. It will be fun to experiment with.

That Arcanist class looks like it could be really complicated and fun in the full game

I don't really understand the Bushi class, though. It seems like just a stronger Landesknect from the video Atlus released. I assume its more complicated than that.

Does anyone know how the save transfer from demo to full game works, especially if you are buying a physical copy of the game? I read somewhere that the full version gives you the option of installing the save file to your SD card, and I assume it is reading the demo file from there. Not sure though.

Add me to the list who would like to know why Nich was banned. He has never seemed like anything other than incredibly helpful in any thread I've seen him post in.
