The new IP awards

For all the talk about stagnation in the gaming industry and an overreliance on sequels and aging properties, this generation has seen the introduction of some very worthy IPs. So, my simple proposal is to celebrate the original, the unexpected, the out-there, the different and, by extension, the future, with a simple discussion. What new IP is the best? Which one has the best chance of still hanging around 2 gens from now? And which, hype be damned, is your personal favorite?

As for ground rules, the games discussed cannot be spinoffs or reinventions of existing franchises (no Metroid Prime or GTA or Ninja Gaiden ... sorry). Nor can standalone titles be counted; for it to qualify as an IP for the purposes of this discussion, it must have some value as a property, meaning it must either have a sequel on the market or currently in development (no BG&E or Psychonauts ... sorry). Nor can licensed properties be counted (no SpongeBob or Charlie and the Chocolate Factory ... sorr ... um .. not-so-sorry).

The Unquestioned and Indisputable Honest-to-Goodness Grand Poobah of New IPs: Halo. (Hello sales records and frenzied fanboys and spinoff juvenile fiction series and Master Chief plush dolls and ...)

The IP That Wouldn't Die: Pikmin (Is there a good chance there be a Pikmin 3 using the Revmote? Does a hobby horse of a hickory dick?)

The 'Oh-My-God It's Risen From the Grave!!!' Award: Devil May Cry (Crappy sequel, followed by great sequel. This is almost a hardcore-only IP, but we already know Dante is coming back next gen, so viva la Son of Sparda!!)

The 'Party Like It's 1993' Award: Viewtiful Joe (It's old-school, side-scrolling, fist-flinging, pink-cape-wearing, weirdo-psuedo-Asian goodness. Half-retro/ half-wacko!)

The 'I Want To Save The World From Fiery Destruction, Too' Award: Baten Kaitos (Generic RPG, but some people seem to like it, so I guess I'll throw it up here cause it qualifies. The sequel better be better.)

The 'Fony Bawk Pro Skating' Award: Jet Grind Radio (Is this a dead-in-the-water franchise living off of Tony Hawd's fading glory? You decide.)

There are probably more, but this is the best I can do for now. Go on, discuss!!!

Yah the JSR thing doesn't make sense. The only thing it has in common with THPS is that its based off an extreme sport. Other than that they're completely different as JSR doesn't even have a real trick system in place since that's not the focus of the game as it is in THPS.

The hell? We've only had 2 games for this.

Oh My God. It's not that big of a deal. I'm aware that they are different franchises with different game mechanics. I was just riffing on their surface similarities is all.

Again, it's just a lame joke about how the series is likely to continue for several generations, based on Nintendo's track record and the functions of the Revmote. You guys take this stuff way too seriously.

The "Why do they even keep trying?" IP - 989 Sports. Its not an IP but its the same idea. Sometimes they skip around in years, which makes you think that they might get their shit together and release something that isn't garbage. Sony should have canned them years ago. I expect them to deliver a bunch of launch PS3 sports titles that are horrible. Keep it up. Runner up: Rayman

The once was gone but now is here and being milked IP - Metroid. There were three games in about 10 years, didn't get a sequel for 8 years since the last one, and since 2002, there's been Prime, Prime 2, Fusion, Zero Mission, Pinball, and Hunters and Prime 3 coming next year. This franchise is officially milked where as five years ago, people desperately wanted a new Metroid to come out. No runners up because this is a pretty isolated case.

The new Megaman in terms of milking IP - Dynasty Warriors. One, sometimes two updates plus what seems to be annual sequels. They are enjoyable but I'd be a liar if I didn't consider it milking. Runners up include Megaman (of course) and Need For Speed.

The shittiest game that sold like hotcakes IP - Nintendogs. A non-game with basic animations and simple commands that was the same shit 10 years ago. Now its selling well and I cannot for the life of me understand why. My respect in gamers has fallen proportionately with how well this game has been selling. Runners up: Spy Hunter, Sonic Adventure 2/Battle, Enter the Matrix, State of Emergency

Rumble Roses!

I just hope they make Reiko cute again for the PS3 version. I assume they're making her ugly anglo to appeal to the huge retarded American Xbox3DO demographic in RR1.5. >:|

Im not sure what surface similarities there are between THPS and JSR? Like, at all. I see more similarities between Sonic Adventure 2 and JSR. Unless I missed the THPS with graffiti mechanics, bad guys, level structures and boss fights. Both JSR and JSRF were platoformers. Very strange and original platformers, but platformers none the less.

Im not sure if you were trying to go with the funny or try and make some sort of statement, but you really failed either way.

I agree with that. Halo is the correct answer for this category
