The NEW Moto X

2300mah battery in late 2014 is a joke. On an iPhone...maybe, as it's just a better optimized OS. Android though, with a 5.2in screen? Forget about it. You'll be lucky to make it through half a day of moderate usage unless they've got some power saving witchcraft involved.

(My Note 3 is 3200mah, and I can't imagine going without it.)

The only "hope" is a combo of optimisation + AMOLED panel + power consumption thanks to the S801 + Project Volta now that L arrives.
But yeah, 2300mAh is a joke nonetheless, and not because it's 2014, but because a phone with the same chassis (and even smaller, like the LG G2) manages to carry a 3000mAh unit.
Let's hope that Moto's claim of a full day holds true.

My S4 has a 5 inch screen so not worried about size, but hate non replaceable battery, no sd card slot and that it's so expensive. Really expect the Moto line to be cheaper and great for off contract people. At $500 it's almost right with AAA flagships.

The battery is not replaceable because it would be very impractical with that shape. While it is 5.2 inches the phone has very thin edges.

A good example of user replacable battery reducing capacity is the G2. Because it got replacable the G3's battery didn't grow despite the dimensions growing. The Korean G2 had a 400mAh smaller battery because it was replacable and that was a much more square phone than the Moto X.

User replaceable batteries are great to have, but for a lot of people a bigger, non replaceable battery (and possibly a more solid phone) is more important.

This is how it is shaped and why the battery is small:

If this ends up having terrible battery life (considering the jump from 720p to 1080p) I'm getting a Nexus 5. It still has good specs and it might have better battery life even when its was criticized. It's also still a good value when it's $150 less.

If battery life is your concern I can't see why going for a Nexus 5. I've been down that road before, and it's probably not where you want to go in that case.

I can't use a phone where I have to worry about the battery life, so Moto X is out. Hopefully they'll announce a new Droid phone...I have the current Droid Maxx with amazing battery with all of Moto X features.

Maybe next year...

I love my moto g. Battery lasts forever even with heavy use. Only thing I dislike is the camera.

Yep. I just got a Moto G 2nd hand for $100 last month. Totally awesome phone. Just the right size screen/form factor, decent amount of power and awesome battery life. My brother-in-law with a Nexus 4 is totally jealous of it as he detests his battery drain.

Hmm, the back of that phone is absolutely beautiful. Really nice look.

I am, however, kind of tired of that Samsung shape. The way the corners are rounded and the general appearance of the front panel looks so damn similar between so many phones. I never liked it.

Sony and Nokia's phones are so much nicer looking in that regard.

As a very happy owner of the current/old Moto X im very disappointed about the new size.

The 4.7" screen is just a perfect fit.

Let's wait for the reviews first. 2300mah is really disappointing but let's not judge it yet.

So on the new Moto X battery life:

This isn't 100% accurate because he hasn't settled into normal use yet, but someone who has been using it since the reveal is saying it's passable with above average use. Not stellar, not bad, but it lasts the whole day.

He also said someone at Moto told him L will do wonders for the new Moto X and Moto G. And that's believable considering people running just the L preview are reporting 30-40% better battery life on the N5.

So I think Moto is just gambling on L. It's a good gamble too, but we won't know for sure until we see it for ourselves...

I can guarantee this will last longer than the N5

The Moto X is my favorite phone ever. Battery could be better in the new one, but I'll still sick with Motorola. First Moto X convinced me.

Wonder if there will be a new MAXX. I love mine. There's no way I can discharge the thing in a day no matter what I'm doing. Feels good not to have to charge.

If I were in the market for an Android handset, Motorola'd have my business. Still undecided on when I'll upgrade from my iPhone 5. Replaced the battery in it last month after two years of use, and it's still humming along fine for my purposes/needs.

This phone sure is purdy, though!

So GAF lets take a guess on how many reviews say Moto is owned by Lenovo.

Not that I expect better from online bloggers. Most of them need to learn how business acquisitions work. News at 11! I know. LoL

Wow. Great review.

Battery life is still the main concern, but everything else look great about this phone.

What I'm thinking is that if Motorola really are in charge of the Nexus X, they're certainly having a super-close look at Android L.
Since L is coming out in less than two months, I think it'd be safe to say that that's the software they have built the Moto X in mind with. That, alongside Project Volta, could make the Moto X's battery much less of a concern than we think.

As far as camera goes, I'd say it won't be a problem at all for most people.

If the Nexus 6 has an equally anemic battery, I will rage, especially if they go with a 2k screen as the rumors suggest.

I like the brown. Reminds me of my old Zune 30 which was a fantastic device.

But that battery is pretty disappointing. I'd find it tough to go to a smaller battery after having a Droid MAXX with a massive 3500mAh battery.

Zune was a fantastic device but the brown one had a green tint to it on the edges.
wow, thats the highest rated android phone ive ever seen from them.

Moto X and the Galaxy Alpha are the android phones that the verge eats up

Looking at those reviews and specs... is there any reason to go for this over a One+ One, besides design?

if you can buy the one outright and dont mind the extra 0.3 inches then it's probably still the better deal. 3gb of ram and 64gb for 150 bucks less is hard to pass up

Looks like camera and battery life are still a concern.

I'm using an old moto x right now and I wouldn't be surprised if it was an issue with the new one. The camera isn't that good, but I don't really use my phone for pics unless they're simple anyways. Battery isn't bad but not great, just enough I'd say. If the new moto is anything like this old one, then I wouldn't be too concerned. The design and efficiency of the moto line more than makes up for those deficiencies in my opinion. I think it's impressive how responsive my phone is for only having mid range specs

For good reason. The X got pretty good reviews across the board, except for the battery life and tepid advertising.

At any rate, I'll watch the review later during my lunch break. I'm wary if it's more if the same Verge-style mediocrity...

Anyone feel free to correct me, because I haven't followed it closely but I've heard that the quality and especially color accuracy has been incredibly inconsistent on that phone, which to me, I can't run with.

Moto Display + Moto Voice + Moto Assist should be enough. If that's not enough, it's most likely getting the quickest update to L, it has baller call quality and reception, and a front facing speaker.

As for the 1+1 all I hear about are touch screen issues, battery life problems, bad phone signal, color inaccuracy, and gps problems.

So.......

If i were to jump back up from my Moto G i think this would be the phone to do it. I like all the things it brings to the table over just having a big crisp screen like the s5/g3 etc.

Well, pooh, that bad phone signal is a killer. All the rest i could get around. Thanks for the heads up!

I don't know why but Motorola phones have always looked crazy ugly to me. I havent fucked with their design since like the original Droid.

2300mAh and QHD is not gonna happen. If they go down that QHD road, the N6 will likely be a 5.5+" device, that regardless of the bezel will easily manage at least a 3000mAh unit, which should make battery life less of a concern.

Also, QHD*. 2K is 1080p. :)

wow, thats the highest rated android phone ive ever seen from them.

Pretty much the overall higher.

Until the iPhone 6 comes, that is...

That wooden back is lovely. I'll be getting the bamboo back myself.

Some people have also said that the leather back was amazing as well, but I'm not sure if that'll be a good idea after a year or two :D

Another glowing review from PC Mag

Although it looks like they rushed this out after seeing the Verge review show up, still missing some important data, like battery.

EDIT: Although it looks like ArsTechnica has posted their review of the New Moto G, and there are some New Moto X benchmarks hidden in there...

All I care about is AnandTech's, GSMArena's, MobileTechReview, and MKBHD reviews..

The PocketNow guy is pretty good too.
