The NEW Moto X

Not open for further replies.
I read a rumor of September 26th from some dopey Google searching, but it would be weird to have such little advance notice.

I'm actually curious what people think of the original Moto X. Do folks think it would be a decent lower-end smartphone for the next couple years? My wife is looking to get her first smartphone and she doesn't want to pay much for her Verizon upgrade. I was thinking the iPhone 5c would fit her best, but they apparently are only offering the ridiculous 8 GB model these days.

It's launching on AT&T and unlocked on the 26th. If VZW was launching then they would be part of the preorder process.

It's out today; AT&T still doesn't have the Moto Maker cards in retail stores. Ugh.

That's unfortunate. Was going to stop by tomorrow to try and get one.

How do the cards work? Can you use any upgrade to purchase one with Moto Maker? 2 year contract, AT&T Next or unsubsidized pricing?

Right now, you can do an upgrade through Moto Maker if you don't have a business/corporate account. You can also buy it straight out without any discount. However, you can't get it through AT&T Next or if you have a business account due for an upgrade (like I do). Instead, what you're supposed to do is go to an AT&T store and buy the phone. Instead of getting the phone, they give you a PIN you then use on Moto Maker. You don't have to pay anything after that point.

I called an AT&T and they said they haven't gotten the cards for the pins, nor have they gotten the pre-customized (white/bamboo and black/leather) phones themselves (the rep was offering to order one for me). He said that "the custom Moto X will likely launch sometime next week." Though, since the last few times I was assured that they'd have the cards by today, I doubt what he said is actually true.

Played with a model in a local Verizon store and I think I'm sold. Shame about the battery, still, but after also messing with an HTC One (M8) and Galaxy S5...I'd so much rather have the Moto X. My Galaxy Nexus is ready to retire.

Part of the appeal for me is that I don't want to have to worry about custom ROMs like I did with my last non-stock phone, the HTC Droid Eris (which was also a piece of shit). Still, I'd like to have it rooted so I can debloat and use other root software.'

There's a pretty good chance this will be rooted in the near future, right?

The Eris was a piece of shit but also had a strangely dedicated developer community. I'm hoping development for the Moto X 2014 similarly takes off so (a) there's always an up-to-date root method and (b) I can unlock and install ROMs if Moto ever drops support.

Strangely, the rep I talked to at the store had never heard of Moto Maker.

I figured out that, if the new Nexus phone fails to deliver, I'm definitely buying a Moto X.
I don't know which one though. It will probably come down to one of these.
Thoughts, Gaf?

Those are sweet.

Unfortunately I orders a Droid Maxx the day before Moto X was announced for Verizon. I went with the Maxx for it's battery life. I can upgrade after a year though. I had to do it, my phone broke and I need it for work. I couldn't wait any longer even though I wanted to see what the nexus will offer.

verizon option is now available on the moto x site. however, the white front face option are on back order for up to 4 weeks.

I think we will have to wait for L to drop before giving proper results.

EDIT_ But I think that this might very well be what you were looking for. Definitely worth a read.

Thanks for that. I'd expect it to be a pretty one-sided write up given how he prefaces it with his relationship with Motorola. But he was definitely honest about his experience with the battery and it seems to match what I'm reading elsewhere.

Sounds like it will definitely be a giant leap up from my Nexus 4.

Most definitely.
Even bigger the moment L comes.

So... Moto X. The Nexus 6 is a phablet. Is there anything else on the Nexus line that will reach Verzion? Or should I cut the shit and buy this phone

Man, Verizon really suck.
But I'd suggest that you buy the X.
Verizon is getting its own version of Moto X, its Droid Turbo, 5.2-inch.
I'm fairly sure that... it's not going to be even remotely the same experience.
Just looked up the Droid Turbo. Battery is going to determine whether I get it or not. If I get this phone and then shafted on Android updates I'm going to cry.

Read a bit about updates on the Moto X and then this.

So I've finally narrowed it down to these two phones, really not sure which one to get. Help me GAF!

The teal looks a lot better in 3D mode. I really wish there were photos of the different woods. I'd love to know how they look in real life.

I personally much prefer the left one, though the busy white panel is not my cup of tea.
I basically not like that tone of wood personally.

Also, I had the same exact question. I asked a friend who was at Motorola's event (and thus has his) and he told me that the 3D models distort the actual colours quite a lot.

Read a bit about updates on the Moto X and then this.

So the Moto X updates will be faster, and Project Volt is going to make the battery worthwhile yes? I'm assuming that's why you've presented it this way.

Wood, teal looks boring af. Check out some of the reviews, they have real world pics.

Updates will be faster, yeah, and Project Volta will definitely improve battery life too.

Buy it outright from Telus. $599 CAD.

Considering the exchange rate, that's about the same as ordering from the US plus shipping.

Man that's expensive.

Moto X 2014 is tempting considering the Nexus 6's size, but, if it ends up being cheaper outright to buy from Google I'll go that route.

Lame.

I donno, I like the teal. Looks unique.

The wood will definitely increase your resale value I'd imagine when/if that time comes.

Finally got mine ordered! Had to jump through a bunch of hoops since my line is on a business account, and Verizon customer service is apparently ridiculously disorganized.

Cognac Leather
Bronze Trim
Black Front
32gb

I'm using the original Moto X still, and I love it. Best phone I've ever owned. Performance seems good on it still, but I don't do any insane gaming on it (hate gaming on touchscreens). Active Display and Moto Assist are both extremely useful.

So, I think it'd be fine for the next couple years, as long as updates keep coming.

is the OG moto x worth 200-250$? Not a fan of super size. 5" is max

The OG Moto X is awesome. If you get one, make sure you get the 32GB version. I have the 16GB one and I'm pretty much constantly having to delete shit I don't want to delete because 16GBs is fucking worthless. Although I'd imagine if you don't plan on using it as your music player the 16GB would be enough.

Also, the camera is the worst thing ever. Other than these two complaints and no expandable storage, it's a pretty good phone.

The Active Display is awesome, BTW. I've been using my old phone since dropping my Moto X down the stairs and I really miss the Active Display.

That's a fair price for off contract, especially considering you can't get it direct from Motorola anymore. But really, if 5" is your max, I must encourage you to at least try out the new X in your hand before writing it off because of the 5.2" screen. That thing is easier to use one handed than the 5" HTC m8. And has (options) for much nicer, grippier backs. And that dimple...

Glad I went with my M8 at the end of August. If anyone is interested in buying a cheap ATT Moto X I'm totally down to sell it.

God, did I miss my unlockable bootloaders.

Why not, Droid Maxx was the exact same as Moto X, which was essentially a Nexus device in terms of bloat and updates.

You can't buy the Moto X from Google, unless you were talking about the Nexus 6?

So apparently the Pure Edition (model XT1095) isn't officially Google Play supported (i.e., not on this list). So I can't download or watch all the HD videos I bought off Google Play because of the DRM protection >:(

Yeah I was talking about the Nexus 6.

The Moto X 2014 has the ideal size for me, but $599 is a bit much ... I'm conflicted haha.

There's really no way the Nexus 6 can launch for under $450 USD. The specs seem a little high for the price to be any lower... unless there was some secret manufacturing voodoo there somewhere.

Huh?

The Moto X was bloated with VZW apps, but it was definitely different both in hardware and software.
The Maxx just had insane battery life.

AT&T has pretty much sent this phone out to die.

One week after this phone has officially launched, none of the stores I called have custom Moto Maker cards nor even displays for the phone itself. This phone will be lucky to sell more than it's predecessor, which is a huge bummer.

Edit: Don't bother trying to get a Moto Maker device if you have AT&T business. Apparently Motorola didn't open up any part of the customization process to AT&T, so only way to get a custom device is through Moto Maker.

Oh, and AT&T doesn't offer the 32 gig version.

Yeah man I can't even get one trough my employee account. I might have to get an iphone Bc I really don't like the HTC I'm currently using and I loved the moto x.
