The nice guys is a damn fine movie

I really liked it but it didn't quite meet my expectations of a spiritual sequel to Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. I've only seen it once though and was really hyped for it for a long when I saw it so might like it much better on a second viewing.

the entire movie is "girl says and does not-age-appropriate things". The movie is surprisingly trite, conventional and unfunny

How many kids did you know who were being raised by fuckup single dads? I'm guessing not many.

Loved this movie. It was everything I loved about 70s hard boiled detective movies combined with everything I love about comedy. Serious plot, silly characters.

finally watched it after reading this thread and man it was hilarious. Def got some kiss kiss bang bang vibes throughout and that's def not a bad thing. Gosling, Crowe and that girl were great. Loved that Gosling kept cutting his suit jackets for the cast lol

lmaoooo nixon

Great film, one of my favorites from this year.

I don't think The Nice Guys performed below expectations. It made a profit, so it didn't bomb. It actually did better than Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Yeah, it didn't earn hundreds of millions, but that's only for films with a huge marketing push and The Nice Guys was a pretty small film.

Hard to say about making it's money back.

I LOVED IT though. Awesome movie.

Yeah it's OK. Ryan Gosling is actually a good actor in it.

I see it as the story of Russell Crowe's character in LA Confidential 20 years later. It works almost perfectly. I think the intro to his character in of Nice Guys is even a homage to his character's intro in that film.

Decided to use the $0.99 Google Play code for this movie.

Really fun. Gosling is entertaining. I like that the movie is self aware and doesn't take itself seriously at all.

Crowe reminds me a bit of one of my late dad's friends.

Couldn't go wrong for a buck, here.

I got this yesterday as part of the Amazon .99 rentals and this is easily my favorite movie of 2016. Right off the bat, the sets used in this and the cinematography are outstanding. For an action comedy, this is a gorgeous looking movie. Rivals some of the best period pieces out there imo.

Healy & March got chemistry in this. Russel Crowe's a no-brainer for "gruff good dude", but Gosling really surprised me here. Always saw him as the dude that always either stares into space and mumbles or shows off his abs and chuckles a lot. But he was fucking hilarious in this. Seeing him go from drunk asshole to eventual hero is such a satisfying payoff. Holly rounds out the cast as one of the best kid characters I've seen in a long time.

Just a great, funny as hell movie with some really good gunfights and fistfights as well. Not seeing this in the theater is my biggest regret of 2016 tbh.

The hitman guy at the end was probably the only thing that seemed a bit out of place in the movie. He seemed like out of a totally different film but I guess that was kind of the point. The scene where Russel and Crowe are just getting out of the elevator and everyone is dead or being killed was hilarious.

I agree so much. Something about it really clicked with me, despite the faults.

Felt like a Pynchon book.

Reminded me a bit of Inherent Vice. Paul Thomas Anderson's adaptation is worth a watch if you haven't already. Enjoyed the novel and loved the film even more. PTA nailed the vibe.

Back to The Nice Guys: Entertaining film. Crowe and Gosling worked well together. I would watch again but I completely forgot about this film when thinking up my fave list for 2016. Still, a fun watch for those that missed it the first time around!

I finally got around to watching this last night and it did not disappoint.

This and Gosling breaking the window in the first 10 minutes were my favorite scenes in the movie. Loved Gosling's "NNNNNO. NO!" protest during the scene where
Crowe breaks his arm
too. I cracked up repeatedly. Can't wait to watch it again!

Sign me up for a movie about the daughter. We'll call it The Nice Girls.

They can go around cleaning up Gosling and Crowe's mess.

Yeah but the little girl was annoying.

She was fucking great! One of the best parts of the film.
Upon watching it a second time, I did notice a few awkward cuts that the editor shouldn't have let into the final print. But other than that the film is fantastic.

I thought she was great and I'm one of the first people to get mad when I think a kid in a film is annoying. Ryan Gosling showed some amazing physical comedy chops in this film too.

The part when he punched the window and cut himself really bad had me howling.

I like that the movie subverts a lot of expectations like this.
Instead of breaking into the bar, Holland cuts his wrist.
Instead of getting into a gunfight with john Boy at the Hotel, Holland and Healy GTFO.
Instead of Amelia being kidnapped by John Boy, he just shoots her in the face and the car companies get away with murder in the end.

Was so bad it was one of only a few movies in my life I walked out on literally 5-10 minutes before the ending. I just kept pushing myself to tolerate it and eventually couldn't any longer.

It was great I loved it start to finish. They just don't make movies like this anymore.

I mean they literally don't, for some reason audiences hate these noir style detective movies (the TV show Terriers was great and hit the exact same beats as this movie ... and was cancelled before the first season even ended). This used to be the most popular genre in Hollywood, in theaters and TV both. But I can't remember the last time one was a big hit. There was a great HBO show called Bored to Death (featuring a pre-fame Zach Galifianakis in a side role) that was the same deal - a bumbling private detective trying to solve somewhat low-stakes crimes by talking to a bunch of colorful characters who all have something to hide. Nobody watched it.

Even The Big Lebowski (really just a parody of this genre) didn't find its audience until years later, when everybody started quoting it.

Glad to see this thread staying alive. I hope the movie finds enough of a cult status that a sequel eventually happens. I have to think that Black, Gosling and Crowe would all be interested considering how much fun they seemed to be having.

Love this movie. Couldn't make it to the theater to see it but as soon as it was up on HBO I watched it. It kind of reminded me of In Bruges. Had a similar type of humor even if the styles of the movies themselves were different.

The Nice Guys was movie of the year to some people (including BrianChrist Stuckmann).

You don't have to worry about the actors and the director not getting works. Although a sequel is not likely.

I think The Nice Guys is reverse Lucy in term of quality and box office.

Absolutely loved the movie. Lots of good laughs. Watched it with a bunch of friends and everyone enjoyed it.

I loved it, I remember I lost it when Gosling's character appears swimming during the party hahahaaha.

Also in the party, when asking the same question in a much more bizarre/dyslexic/ way (after some drinks).
