Btw, I wear a vintage 1980s Members Only coat. How does that manage to fuck with your perception of fashion?

I'll bet you wear it with skinny jeans and your 2140 Wayfarers, don't you? DON'T YOU

None, you are a hipster and use your jacket to search for pork pie hats.

13 oz?

I forgot to mention a jacket that breaths. Also Mountain Hardware(?) is a great brand as well.

Anyway, I'm debating if I need waterproof or just water-resistent.
7.2 oz :lol

It's a new model released this year. Damn lightweight and damn warm :_)

This is the CM, you might get a better idea: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GirGg2uiVpM

Though I think they don't sell this in the US.

Also probably not warm enough for under 0ºC temperatures in some areas of the US. But here it doesn't get that cold.

Are you guys like upset about something? Please, tell me exactly which culture directly relates to your upbringing and background so that I can go out and buy the type of designer clothing that wouldn't make you so mad.

Btw, I found it in my dad's closet. Who is also black.

Typical hipster response!

Who said anything about designer? D:

I assume that's what "non-hipsters" wear. I honestly could not tell you the name of anything outside my adidas and that the majority of my shirts are probably American Apparel due to the fact they are all band shirts.

So lets review.

Addidas

American Apparel

Members' Only

Yep, totally not hipster

I do a fair amount of climbing and back country snowboarding in AK and usually wear a NF Summit Series coat(sometimes my 66' North but it isn't as warm). Say what you want about the lower Flight series TNF line but the Summit series stuff is still up with Mountain Hardware, Arc'teryx and Feather Friends.

Patagonia...... last year i somehow got the winter 09/10 catalogue from them and it was pretty comical. The cover was someone climbing a mountain in a raging blizzard, inside the catalogue was exactly 0 products that you could do that kind of climbing with.

For 71.3246 USD! That's pretty amazing. I'll trade you a box of oranges for one.

Really? Fuck...

Wait, I thought American Apparel was only hipster if you actively shopped there? I just have band t-shirts MADE by them.

In all reality, I don't care. I have no idea what the pre-defined parameters are for being hipster so I will probably look like an idiot if I just start listing shit I own thinking that by some turn of logic, it can't be proven as hipster.

There's a point in all of this...

Yeah, Patagonia's been way worse than North Face in the "fashion over function" race for a while.

Senior year in high school, 2 or 3 years ago, it was as if everyone had to have a fucking North Face and a pair of Rainbow name brand flip flops. And wear them both all winter long...

Ironically, Uniqlo's only store in the US is in NYC on Broadway. It's huge and always packed. Tons of people wear this coat (including myself).

It's an awesome coat btw. For anyone who really wants it, Uniqlo has an online catalogue and does phone orders.

Oh really? Didn't know!. But yeah, it's a pretty awesome coat, and incredibly lightweight. Gotta love it.

these things have been really popular where i live for a loooooong while. never had one myself, but they seem like decent coats..

*everybody* wears North Face jackets in NYC. every race, creed, whateva... they're just really good jackets. it's been that way since the 90's.

i remember people used to get stuck up for their north face jackets and air jordans back in the 90's.

Yeah. Northface is all over in New York. I'll stick with my overcoats and peacoats.

Wow. Since when was wearing a north face jacket a fashion statement?
Maybe it is because my family went hiking an climbing mountains when we were young, but I always thought of them as really good but expensive jackets for outdoor people.

I own my north face jacket for more then 10 years now. Was worth every penny.
That my dad payed for.
This makes me feel sad and old :(.

NEW Member's Only?
:lol :lol

Between this and the "lol spit game - kids these days!" comments from that thread a few days ago... some of you need to go outside more often.

I just got back from NYC for the past week and holy shit. Every third person was wearing a North Face jacket. I haven't seen this much mindless, copycat apparel wearing since the 80's.

They look warm and durable, but is it just the extra 100 dollars they tacked on to the price that has made them so popular? You can't convince me a Columbia jacket wouldn't be just as good. Plus, how durable do you need a winter coat when it's just going to be out of style in 2 years?

90's are calling to let you know you're late. NF was even bigger back then.

I didn't see it much in highschool but when I started college in 2005 (U of Pitt), I was pretty surprised at how popular the brand was.

I would like a nice members only jacket *shrugs*. Not a "hipster", I just think they have a nice cut.

I want a north face fleece, heard they are pretty warm but the prices are crazy.
Some north face jackets at macys cost about $300 fucking dollars :lol fdskjfsddfsfj jeez lol

I just wear a old navy coat B^) cheap but great.

I've been wearing North Face since 1990. Hmmm was I proto-hipster? I guess its a Colorado thing?

300 is reasonable for a good parka. I paid about that much 5 years ago for a Mountain Hardware parka, still wear it.

I own a heavy winter parka made by The North Face, and up here in Calgary, Canada, we get periods of -40 to -50 degree weather. That's right, so cold I don't even have to include Celsius or Fahrenheit. Anyway, why I payed good money for mine, is because when I have to go out in weather like that, that is the only jacket that I can actually feel warm in.

Better and canadian.

http://www.arcteryx.com/Product.aspx?EN/Mens/Jackets/Fission-SV-Jacket That's mine and I would not buy anything else.

A lot of my white friends have this jacket. Before I graduated from college last year, I saw that jacket EVERYWHERE. Never saw it in urban areas though. I just figured that it was a trend in a certain demo.

I don't understand why you'd go with North Face for a coat (they're straight-up ugly), but they made me some nice boots. Hard to find something waterproof, extremely insulated, comfy inside, yet normal-looking.

I moved to Wisconsin in August and have seen a lot of north face jackets but it is damn cold and gets a ton of snow here so I dont' think it's douche.

This thread has really got me thinking about getting a new winter jacket. I would only really need it for walking across campus (perhaps with a fifth of vodka concealed in an inner pocket) and maybe the occasional sledding/skiing. It gets pretty cold around here (often dropping below 0F and usually gets down to -30~-40F with wind chill a few times a year) and I'm willing to spend up to $200 if it's justified. Right now I've got two potentials:

1. Montbell UL Tec Down Jacket ($140.98)
http://www.prolitegear.com/montbell-us-ul-tec-down-jacket.html
montbell-tech-down-jacket-olive-green-charcoal-black-rg.jpg

I'm not sure if this one is too specifically designed to be a lightweight backpacking/climbing jacket that I'd be wasting my money on it 'cause I don't care how much it weighs.

2. Uniqlo Down Jacked B ($129.90)
http://shop.uniqlo.com/uk/goods/065951#colorSelect

This one just seems too good to be true. Looks nice and is relatively cheap, but I might have to purchase it from the UK?

Anyone wanna help me out? Right now I'm pretty much basing everything on cost, looks, and whatever this "fill power" thing is.
