You'd think such public and blatant discriminatory criteria would be illegal. Guess not.
 
Yeah man it's not like this had a thermonuclear effect on Hollywood output ever since.
I'm simply suggesting making it illegal would be pretty difficult.

In the end the vast majority of movies made aren't expecting to end up with an Oscar nom, so I'm not sure this has had that great of an effect.

Imagine the DEVASTATING effect this criteria has had on the indigenous peoples of northern europe. What small indie product of ireland, scotland, england, sweden, finland, norway, germany, belgium...on and on where they can't just hire their friends, family, locals, they would have to SEEK OUT foreigners just to meet the criteria of some guilt ridden american organization?
 
This film is going to bomb. I had no idea it was re-interpreted by some feminist hack and made presentable for 'modern audiences'. When I studied Classical Civilization in University we all read the Robert Fagles adaptation. It doesn't surprise me to see this story pozzed. The Odyssey isn't just an adventure story for Greeks, it is like a moral/cultural code. One of the principles of The Odyssey and the Illiad, for that matter, is the idea of being a gracious host and a respectful guest. Paris and Troy are doomed to destruction because he violated this principle when he stole Helen from Menelaus. The suitors are violently massacred by Odysseus because they essentially take advantage of Penelope's hospitality. These ideas are so ingrained in Greek culture and it is a shame to see these themes bastardized by Hollywood hacks.
 
There's no need to make excuses for Nolan's casting decisions. The man has enough leverage in the industry to fund and make whatever he wants, however he wants. He doesn't need Oscar glory. This is what he has settled on… Elliot Page. Hahahaha.

I always thought he is a massive hack. I never understood why people like his movies so much, to me they always felt like pretentious, overproduced crap with little substance. Especially his "magnum opuses" Interstellar and Inception. These two i can't stand, not even as background noise movies. They are so distractingly self indulgent.

The only Nolan movie i like is The Dark Knight and that's only because of Heath Ledger, not Nolan.

So yeah, i'm not surprised this guy would try something like this. He is so full of himself he probably thinks he can get away with anything, including but not limited to shitting on ancient Greek culture. For that i hope his career bombs and never recovers. He is rich enough already, he will be fine.

The thing is you can still make a historical film with an accurate all white cast.

The Northman by Robert Eggers had an all white cast because that made sense for the time period. Same with his next film Werwulf, which is set in 13th centry England, so again, historically accurate for the time period. Eggers has even confirmed at least some of the dialogue will be in Middle English.

However, then there is other side of race swapping white characters. It's a one way street. You don't see historical or mythical black characters swapped for white actors.

I get it. You want more non white characters in films, but a way to fix this instead of race swapping historical characters would be to make films based on non-european history and folklore.

Africa, Asia, South America, Middle-East all have rich and vibrant history that is ripe for a big budget Hollywood production. Tell me you wouldn't want to see a big budget film about Oda Nobunaga or Shaka Zulu? I know I would!

Not only would it spread this rich history globally, but it's also divserty in historical films done right. Non-white actors could be cast into films that celebrate their rich history and culture.

I was looking to pick up Ovid at some point this year. I'll make sure I avoid any recent Penguin edition.

There seems to be a trend in recent years of feminists butchering Greek mythology. Not just in translations of classical texts, but also writing Greek mythology fiction with a feminist spin.
 
The contemporary treatment of ancient/classical western culture and presentation of their people is not so great to put it nicely.

And if you wanted Oscar consideration, something ANY film should be, right? then you would have to 'compensate' for this all white cast in other areas of the production or be forced to cast outspoken LQBTBBQ white folks at least to 'get credit'.

And of course very early on there were rules, written or otherwise, that strictly forbid or at least made overly controversial, the casting of films with black leads. But of course all that stuff is 50-70+ years ago or more and hasn't been relevant for like two generations at least, even if it is dredged up over and over.

This is the way, its SO OBVIOUS. But of course the reason why this isn't being done is also obvious. There is NO MARKET for it. The money is, and always will be, focused on the two main money markets in film, america/europe and china, with the latter being heavily regulated. There simply isn't much money anywhere else. So to get americans/europeans to turn out to watch some folk tale from south america, sub-sahara africa, or deepest India, thats a hard road versus just reusing one of the Grimm fairy tales, something from Arabian Nights, or all the other much more widely known stories from european mythology and then just 'repurpose' it for 'modern audiences'. And the historical topics of most interest to americans/europeans are, to no surprise to anyone, the parts that involve THEM. Not to mention the lack of english/european sources for stuff that didn't involve them.

So the Oscars can stick their head in the sand and push DEI, but as the quality of films suffers for having to serve an agenda instead of a unique vision, the ratings will plummet and they will blame the very same audience that they actively turned away.

Historically, Hollywood was pretty homogeneous, but that was mostly due to the industry limitations of the time. Today, access to actors and material is completely global, so the situation is very different. With streaming platforms and international co-productions, even niche stories can find audiences worldwide. This is gradually changing how casting and project selection work, making the whole process less locally driven and much more globally oriented.

I did put some examples of historically accurate all white cast films in my post. Death of Robin Hood also looks to be doing the same. It can be done, but as you pointed out, if you want to be considered for an Oscar you need diversity in other areas.

I also think these rules are not required for foreign films. For example, a Polish or Japanese production wouldn't need to follow the same guidelines.

Maybe I just have different tastes to most people. I'd love to see a massive historical epic based on the life of Oda Nobunaga.

They wouldn't need to cost hundreds of millions to make either. If you use unknown actors rather than a listers you're saving tens of millions off the bat.

As an example, look at Mel Gibson's Apocalypto (2006) This was a box office success, grossing over $120 million on a $40 million budget. There is not one white actor or European character in that movie.

And I know it's not historical, but regarding just budgets, Godzilla minus one grossed over $100 million on a budget that was no more than $15 million.

Hollywood just needs to get a grip on it's budgets.

Regular movie goers don't care about that like you do. When they watch the trailer they see an historical FANTASY movie by Nolan.

What is going on with Christopher Nolan, everything about this movie looks terrible, the color grading, the script and dialogue, the casting, somehow the acting even though he went out of his way to get big names whether they fit or not, I didn't like Tenet and while I enjoyed Oppenheimer I definitely felt like it was overrated, but damn, I didn't think it was possible to be less hyped for one of his movies than I was for Dunkirk.

There are quite a few low budget indie films that get BP nods, in fact I'd say hoping for a BP nod is what brings big name actors to these roles since there is very little money in them otherwise and what helps get these films picked up by a larger distributor.

I'm in the middle on him; some great filmmaking, and some middling work... but the one constant is that his films think they are highbrow but never manage to achieve it.

Batman trilogy was too heavy-handed for me, even comical in the constant lines about "the hero you need" etc. I have a hard time rewatching it, the dialogue is so plodding and overdone. I'll stick up for Interstellar as excellent moviemaking, it's a wonderful journey of a film, but again it doesn't achieve the kind of intellectual ideas that it seems to want to explore.

I already made the decision to skip this movie after that last trailer, but Lupita being Helen just cements my choice. Imagine commanding all of Greece to launch an all scale attack on Troy for Lupita N'yongo? Like fuck off.

I'll stick up for Interstellar as excellent moviemaking, it's a wonderful journey of a film, but again it doesn't achieve the kind of intellectual ideas that it seems to want to explore.
My first problem with Interstellar is that instead of focusing on space and science, it focuses on love and family. Which is a complete waste.

My second problem is that the movie makes the universe feel small. It feels like the characters can go everywhere despite the vast distances and even that one guy who waited for them for what, 30 years, is brushed off like a nothingburger. I had the same issue with Project Hail Mary, both movies make the universe seem small and accessible.

Contact on the other hand treats space with respect and makes it feel like something amazing and beyond our reach. And sure, the ending is a bit lame but it's still better than the black hole reveal in Interstellar.

I don't think he is a hack. I think he is a great spectacle director who knows how to craft a film on a technical level, but that's about it. I find a lot of his work hard to rewatch. Dunkirk on the other hand is a masterpiece.

I'm sure this will be a well made and enjoyable film, at least for me. But if you're a huge fan of Homer or even authentic adaptations in general, then you're probably going to hate this regardless. You're better off going into it expecting a unique interpretation only Nolan can deliver. Plenty of filmmakers have adapted famous works and completely reimagined the source material, for better or worse. Nolan is no different.
