The Official Final Fantasy 12 (NA) Thread

My only complaint is that the sound quality of the voice samples themselves sound a little low, but that's probably because there's so much dialogue in the game.
I noticed that too -- good to see I'm not the only one. Also, the bonus DVD is probably the best bit of bonus content I've seen for a game in a long while. You can tell Square Enix put a lot of effort into it.

Yeah DQ8 was easy to grind with since DQ has teammate AI. The more commands I have to input per fight, the less I like to grind. :lol

Compare to FFX where if you wanted AP for everyone, everyone had to be swapped in. Totally ugh to do that every fight.

Concerning the VA: it's stellar! Especially when compared to FFX! This is the way it should've been done all along.

Maybe something has to give when a game this large and lush is designed to fit on a single DVD.. but then again Baten Kaitos fit on a much smaller disc.

WEIRD. I was expecting a pretty ho-hum bonus disc.

Yeah, I found the sound quality to be a little sub-par as well, but the greatness of the performances themselves and the great localization more than makes up for it.

:lol :lol
Kev can't even make it through the opening cutscene without crying tears.

Picked up my CE or whatever copy at lunch. Few more hours now...

Though I can play GTA VCS right now *hugs PSP*

I don't have the game yet (and probably won't get to play it until tomorrow...) but I did want to report that the opening movie definitely did a number on my wife and I too and also the awesome orchestrated version of the FF theme that plays over it went over very well as the recessional for our wedding.

Bah at work now, just picked the game up on lunch. The bad news, 4 more hours left. The good news, 5 day weekend starting tomorrow:) Guess I know what I'll be playing for a good amount of it. Didn't realize the gambit system was so involved and the licensing system looks a lot more free-flowing than the Sphere Grid.

Adding gambits will really make the fights smoother I'm thinking, not having to micromanage my team will be nice.

Is it available at Circuit City yet or do I hve to wait until tomorrow? I finished up Bully and Splinter Cell so my queue is all cleared up for Final Fantasy!

I assume it should be there, it was available at every other store I've seen. I think Square set it up like Madden with a stock date of Tuesday, shipping it earlier.

Somehow the grinding never really bothered me all that much with FFXII and I really enjoyed working through the dungeons (which are really well done).

If things aren't clicking for you yet, fear not. I wasn't completely convinced by the game initially either, but upon reaching the dungeon requiring you to kill energy draining buggers in order to proceed, I was hooked. That was the first time I really started to appreciate the gameplay and enjoyed it all the way through.

I'm jealous of the 16:9 mode added to the US version, though. :( I really would have enjoyed that option as I always felt that my view was constricted somehow. The world is beautiful and demanded a wider view.

How are the voice overs in the US release, by the way?

FF12's 16:9 mode is the fake ass kind though. You actually see more with the game set to 4:3. But I guess guys with widescreen TVs won't care. :P

The circuit city near the GS here had a small rack for FFXII (regular version), and there was 20-30 copies. So, yeah, they should have some copies there.

So it's like God of War's 16:9 mode. Oh well, if I never play it in 4:3, I'll be blisfully unaware.

As for the 16:9 mode, when are you given the option to enable it? At the "press start" menu, or once you actually get into the game? I'd rather not watch the opening FMV in 4:3 if I can help it.

geez heres a question: Where the heck is the 2nd level black magic?!?!?! Im 27 hours in and I dont have fira, bizzara, and thundara yet. No shops I can find anywhere, in town or otherwise have it. It driving me nuts, magic is so far totally useless.

I really wanna check out Rabanastre, from all the memories of people saying how incredible of a city it is.

I mean, it is an almost fully functional city, right? Not like previous FF's where the cities were 3-4 screens and thats it, right?

And there are people! To talk to! AMAZING.

Rabanastre has more life than the "downtown" of the dinky middle-of-nowhere Maine city I go to college in.

I'm checking out the instruction book now and have two really dumb questions.

1) Is the audio decent enough to turn off subtitles?
2) What is the screen flicker filter option that can be turned on/off?

1) I leave subtitles on. The audio is very good, but you don't stand to understand everything through hearing, that's just the nature of things. I have the subtitles there as a safety measure.

2) No freakin' clue.

The flicker filter is a fullscreen 'blur' filter that is useful for those with CRT televisions, in order to prevent flickering on colors like white. I personally prefer it off, even on a CRT, because everything is much sharper. If you can stand the minor flickering with it off, I highly recommend using it.

Let's see!

I have a few minor complaints...

- As mentioned, voice samples can tend to be a little low... no idea why! Really distracts me, 'cause I'm a sucker for good sound quality.
- I hate the loading, I wish things were more seamless! It pisses me off in everything, although in here it seems to annoy me more 'cause there's always those little blue orbs that indicate you're about to enter some loading and I'm all "damn do i have to". I guess understandable given PS2's limitations, though, just a minor niggle!
- Also, the jaggies are ripping my ever-lovin' eyes out. I have a pretty good HDTV, but even it is not making it better... ugh, for the days of next-gen.

Besides that...

+ I'm on record as liking FFXII's soundtrack out of the game, but it really shines when it's connected to the scenes. It seems that while there is a lack of range and diversity (perhaps - I'm still only like ten hours into the game), the trade off is a soundtrack that is faaaar more cohesive and appropriate versus old FF games. I'm lovin' it.
+ Just like I thought, the battle system is excellent. It's not necessarily the combat itself that makes it so good (although, there's so many options that I'm tickling myself silly every other minute with something new to do) it's that the setup makes the game feel so much more immersive. I'm never distracted by annoying transition screens or awkward phasing, it's all right there on the field. When I'm out monster hunting, it feels like monster hunting should... and it's immensely more satisfying for the kill. There's no doubt the MMORPG influence, but it really works here. And with the utilization of gambits, it finally bridges the gap that before made it kind of irritating to go this route.
+ There's so much more to the story left, I'm sure... so I won't judge it yet except to say the translation is top notch and I'm very much digging the whole general "feel" of the game. It's much more mature than past FF games thematically, and it's sort of nice to have such a unique feeling world among the numbered FF games.
+ Oh yeah... FFXII cities >>> any other FF cities. Waaay more alive and the architecture is far less over-the-top and absurd (although, it gets close at certain points).

I was closer to
40 hours
, but my game clock may be a little inflated due to how much time I spend in menus, the license board, and in shops tinkering with equipment choices.

I'm really not sure, either. And sometimes it's a bit jarring, it pulls me out of the atmosphere of the game cause it sounds so recorded, so in another place. I thought maybe just because of the massive volume of audio there is, but DQ8 had tons of audio and the audio of its VA was outstanding. Anyone got a clue?

...who only gets a small credit in the manual for "story and concept." How much DID they redo after he "left?" Does the bonus DVD have anything in it on that whole fiasco?

The fact he is only credited as "story and original concept" is a bitchslap in the face.

Check the FF3 topic please, JayDubya.

I really like the look and feel of the tin case.

PS: haha, "Alcohol Reference, Partial Nudity, Suggestive Themes"

FF has been Redubbed: Final Fantasy: The Skinemax Conumdrum.

You can switch to 16:9 at the start.

all day FF party for me!

Edit: When I picked up FFXII, some smelly retard guys started trying to have a conversation with me about how PS2s always break and how the DS proves "gaming should be fun." I guess i'm lucky I'm not in jail for murder right now.

Has anyone tested this game with the HDLoader? I guess I'll find out tonight when I try it.

It wont work without patching the game itself. You'll need to rip the game to your PC, patch the ISO, and then put it on the PS2 HDD. And even then, it doesn't work perfectly, the FMVs tend to stutter with the audio skipping every once in a while. But everything else pretty much works great, and load times are of course incredibly shortened.

Only logged a little over an hour so far, but this game is already reeking of brilliance.

Also got the Basch cover on my LE guide, the exact one I wanted!

Anyway, back to the game.

Ami, how have you already put ten hours into it? Lightspeed, dude.

Does the Pro Logic II audio help at all or is it fubared across the board?
