The Official Final Fantasy 12 (NA) Thread

Well I've logged 13 hours although I've probably played more like 15...died twice...once to Dinosaur and once to Wraith(his doom killed my guys)...and I ****ed up once on my talents and resetted...which probably wasn't too smart...so that set me back a half hour.

I just got
all 6 characters...after killing the old judge
.

The game is good. The battles are fast paced which is nice...and the boss battles seem to be getting a bit more difficult which is good too...or maybe I'm just getting worse. Haha.

I like the assist character idea...very cool. The music is all pretty good too...

The hunting is kind of blah. I wasted an hour searching for the big chicken guy or whatever...just to notice he was in a zone next to me and still couldn't find him...this was before I died too to wraith and didn't save beforehand(doh)...so I lost an hour there. So yeah...15 hours...I'm whiped...this place I'm at seems like a good place to stop.

The story could be a lot better I think although I like the characters.

What's the point of discussing a game if there's no fun via heated debating? You just gotta learn to pick who to discuss with is all!

You misunderstood me. I'm not saying there's no place for the debate. Of course not. I'm just surprised that the reception is so split down the middle, as opposed to what I thought it would be. And what I thought it was be is more favorable.

FINAL FANTASY!!

You know, people here complain about FF and talk about how the series is milked and they don't like this title and that title, but seriousely, you must feel like me in the way that putting in a new FF game is an experience that just can't be compared...

First time I saw that title screen, I had goosebumps again... Same way I had goosebumps when...

Cecil and Kain left the Baron Castle on their journey...

...Terra walked across the snow towards Narshe...

...Aeris looks up from the Mako Energy and we get a view of Midgar...

...When you first hear Liberi Fatali as you get an awesome collage of scenes...

...When Zidane saves Garnet falling during the "kidnapping"...

...When Sin breaches Zanarkand...

...When forces of darkness invade Tavnazia...

...When you see the city of Dalmasca in all of it's glory.

Seriousely, really awesome experiences. I love Final Fantasy. Every hater for any of the games (including myself for hating 9) can bite me :p

Amen.

Well, as demi said, most of the people who are complaining right now are those who played the Japanese version and didn't like it... the US gamers, most, seem to enjoy it a lot albeit not necessarily as much as Y2Kev, brandhon83 and me.

Been playing the game. IT FREAKING ROCKS.. it's funny because people have been bitching about things that I find enjoyable, like the battle system and License board. I need to stop reading reviews and impressions from GAF for now on. You guys have a horrible track record.

Quick question, I went along with Vaan (only 3 hours in) to beat the 3rd clan monster and got owned by 1000 needles? Is the key to run away or use an aero mole (I just found one in the desert and it did 580 dmg to him which left him almost dead but enough to 1000 needles me)

I also really like the license board. Cool idea.

i'd hate to add fuel to the fire about the battle system argument and i know its been beat to death here ... but playing a FF without random encounter is like getting a big, massive tumor removed that should've been cut off years ago. well, maybe not that extreme ... but y'know. that's my 2 cent

Right. Well, I'm an FF from the old days and this is the first one I've bought on launch day since FF VII. This is also the first one I've been REALLY into since FF III SNES (VI) and I'm a big Matsuno fanboy of late. I pumped 98 hours into Tactics Advance and I bet I could do that easily on this game. Especially with the similar monster quests and all.

Really enjoying my time here. Screw the haterz!!!! ;)

Yeah, i mean, it's what i expected and a bit more... so, my new complaints are relatively minor and my love for it is flowing because it's like they opened a portal into my brain and listened to all my complaints about PAST FF games :D

Well, it's coming more clear by reading this thread that FFXII is seemingly more accepted by those who don't like RPGs anymore. Which is irritating because I'm the big OMG LOVE FF guy and I'm handed not what I would have liked after all this waiting. Kinda like those who are all "OMG WTF THE WII DOES NOT TARGET ME!?!?!" I'm sure there are exceptions to this, but that's just what I'm reading.
Sure I seemingly march the hate parade on FFXII, but it's not a bad game. Just not what I want in my Final Fantasy games.

Oh, and it doesn't help that I think Matsuno is overrated. ^^

I think I figured out what's with the uneven voice samples.

I think Square was going for a distance effect. The voices get lower and more hollow when the camera angle shifts away from the person speaking. At least it seems that way. Can get a bit annoying, but the awesome voicework makes up for it. Love Balthier and Fran especially.

RK, I don't think you can pigeonhole who likes the game. I'm a huge Square fanboy from back in the day and I love the game. Combat actually has some challenge to it, and some of the objectives so far are pretty creative.:)

I'm quickly realizing I really need to break this habit of talking to EVERY SINGLE NPC.

I'm sure I'll log in at dozens of hours longer than the average completion time......

that's exactly how I feel when read this thread.

Well, Im about 6.5 hrs in right now, and it is probably my favorite FF to date. I didnt realize how big of a difference getting rid of random encounters would be. I'm also really liking the music and the voice acting is great. I dont mind the license board, it just sucks you have to purchase the spell to use it once you buy the square on the board.

Anyway, I just beat
the giant electric bug thing in the sewers, and that was a good battle-had to use a couple of phoenix downs
I like that there is somewhat of a challenge with the boss battles too.

Of course I can, it's called an opinion. :D And I never said everyone.
And I really disagree with the "combat actually has some challenge to it" thing that's been floating around.

OKay. My sympathies then. I hope you can find something more you enjoy in the game and make your peace with it.

Can someone clarify a few battle-related queries for me while I'm entrenched in this thread? Is there a timing or positioning skill releated to a block or parry? Or is that stuff only enhanced through your license board? Does attacking from behind increase damage? I can't tell if I'm fooling myself into believing that. I've deduced that you do affect enemies more when you slowly walk towards them while sleeping and then attack first. That was cool and that I like.

I like RPGs, I just hate certain ELEMENTS of jRPGs. Storyline focus (since every jRPG has a shitty storyline) and random battles has been a primary complaint of mine.

fission mailed, japanophile gamers.. fission mailed

Is there a way to set a gambit up that goes something like:

If my mana is > 80% then cast sleep on nearest enemy?

Or something like "if enemy weakness is fire, then cast fire at enemy if my mana is > 60%"

Is it limited to one "if then" statement?

No, don't! Join the "I talked to every single NPC in FFXII, sometimes multiple times, and read every single line of text the game had for me" club. Currently, I am the only member. :( I've done it in the Japanese game, and I'm doing it again in the English game.

final fantasy is arguably about going in different directions and progressing with each iteration (i.e. its the total antithesis of dragon quest). if you're an rpg purist then i wouldn't expect to be pleased with anything that comes from the main-numbered series again

Too much hate in this thread again. So I'm going to quote my post from the last page for all you to read again :p

Come on people. It's a new Final Fantasy. Contrary to popular belief, we only get this every 2 or 3 years. Enjoy this. Argue about it after you've played it and gone back to your cynical game hating selves :)

earthbound had a shitty storyline?

There's not too much hate, there's like 3 or 4 people at most. the problem is, for the most part, those who enjoy the game are playing it, while those who don't are bitching about it:P

Right, but instead of expanding upon the awesomeness in FFX and FFX-2 we're given what feels to me like even less of a game.
You can argue the different directions thing, but FFXII just throws away all the good and is left with a pile of average that feels like a step back.

I'm bitching about it while my party kills enemies. I do have to pick it up once in a while to move through the dungeon though. :P

XI: Chains of Promathia and VI have my favorite real time intros.

XII wins for CG madness though. it was well edited and paced a really good prologue as well, a rarity for a CG intro.

XI CG intro was great, but is now a bit dated by XII. Young Aldo + Tavnazia getting sacked + TARUTARU METEOR POWER rocks though.

I think X was the only intro I didn't really like, but that's probably because I hate X almost entirely.

Earthbound was all about the journey being more important than the end which is why i liked it. In terms of plot, or whatever, its storyline wasn't special... but they presented it in such a way which elevated it.

if the FFXII haters had their hand in the RPG genre, everything would be like DQ and Persona. what a shitty world we would live in if they listened to you guys.

Okay, just so I can help you all understand why the people who have played the Japanese version hate on it a bit:

The game goes downhill as soon as you reach
Draklor Laboratory
. The characters, the story, the area designs, everything. I still think the game as a whole is an amazing experience that nobody should miss, it's just at one point near the end of the game, it loses what made it so good in the first place.

That guy was a ****ing breeze...easiest boss of the game really. I would kill his little guys with one hit with Vaan while everyone else was on the main boss. It was over in like a minute.

My private parts tingle in delight! GLEE!
I could seriously play nothing but DQ games and Metroidvanias for the rest of my life. Unfortunately they don't pump them out fast enough, so I have to play other things. The jackasses! But I digress. Time to pick the controller back up. :D

I dont hate the game. I've never said I hate the game, you see that's what wrong here. you have to say "OMG THIS IS THE BEST FF EVAH!" becuase if not you are a) trolling b) hating the game c) bitching about it.

there is no middle ground here you either hate or love it, how can I have a discussion about a game if I cant say what bothers me? this is what I dont get, It's not about being a negative nancy it's about discussing a game. I mean Im *gasp* having fun with it how can I hate it?

well then you'll probably dig FFXIII which is supposed to be an extension of FFX-2's battle system. but i guess that's common knowlege by now

I didn't realize that, but now I'm intrigued! Just can we get some class system up ins? That might have won me over with FFXII but of course Matsuno couldn't allow such a thing!

Less arguing, more complaining about that goddamn T-Rex.

Sure, he won't aggro you, but who can resist the urge at the time to try and rob a Dinosaur 30 levels higher than you.

"Dude, just prep Steal and run for it".
