I beat the Rex at like 15 I think. I used all my items and MP at the time though. :lol

Let's get this junk back on topic... In addition to my previous questions, can someone also better explain chaining? I read the manual. No idea how to keep it going and what the benefits are. Sometimes it seems like they drop out when I get hit, other times they don't. I don't get it.

I can't wait until PS2 emulation gets awesome. I'd totally like to play this game in high res.

Well, basically you kill the same enemy type, and the numbers rise. If you're killing Jaguars and then you run into a Malboro or something and kill the Malboro your chain breaks. It also breaks if you touch a save crystal. But it doesn't stop if you run away a few maps.

Anyway, the more chains you get, the more items the enemies drop. Once you level your chain combos up a few times, they'll drop 4 of an item or 2 of 2 items or whatever. It's good for getting teh moneys.

Chains are done by killing the same monster type in any given area back to back over and over, it's a lot different than I expected looking at the videos and thinking "Wow, they put XI's exp chains in this!".

The benefit is they drop better items/money as it stacks up.

If you chain, enemies drop begin to have a higher rate of dropping loot/drop more and more/better loot

chaining nets you more loot from monsters also you sometimes get some bonus status effects on you (protect/shell) and you get healed sometimes.

of course not every monster drops items all the times chain just raises the probability of item drop from monsters.

It's that newbie illogic. You figure "Well, maybe if I somehow get a steal off on him and get away, he'll give me a Destroyer of Faces +3!"

But no, if by the offchance you do succeed, it's probably a pebble...

Anyhow, I'm 0/3. Everytime I have zoned out to grind, explore or expand my beastery I've tried. :(

Why? Because I'm obviously stupid.

Chaining is the same thing over again and again and again and again.

its pretty unbelievable. ps2 is really turning into the system that just wont stop

when the camera's top-down bird's eye view the graphics seem nothing to write home about but maybe that's different in HD. but when i zoom in i'm amazed everytime. especially with the character faces. i'm not one of those creepy otaku types but ashe is probably the first female game character i really thought to be hot

they're indescernable from actors at this point. moreso than ffX iirc

I'm enjoying myself so far. There will always be haters that just hate for the sake of hating. My only problem is the guest system because you can't alter their gambits. Basch isn't so bad, but Ashe is a friggin' idiot. Almost got me killed. The camera felt off because I was so used to FFXI, but once I stopped fighting it (was used to constantly adjusting it), it worked fine.

No wonder I wasn't getting any xp boosts. :lol

It doesn't have to be the same kind of monster, does it? I think I got 8 on several different types...

Ah, and you have to kill the same enemy over and over. I thought it was just not taking damage. I got it now.

Raises the probability to pretty much 100% and increases how many items you get on a drop. Couerl Hides x3 per kill + the one I stole ftgw

It doesn't seem like it...I'm not as far as some of the others here, but I just fork my loot over to merchs that make random stuff for me.

[edit] I'm ahead of both those guys, though --^^

It has been said, though not as directly: chains increase the drop rate of the rarer items. Each enemy can drop a 'common item', a 'semi-common' item, a 'rare' item and a 'very rare' item. The chance percentage is increased for all every time your chain levels up.

Alex said:

When you sell certain items to a vendor, items show up in the bazaar list. It's kind of like synthesis, because certain things only show up if you sell certain other things. There are some really cool hints about what to sell to make what in the bestiary.

I know what I'm doing. :P Don't worry though, I probably won't get to play again until, oh maybe the end of next week if I'm lucky!

Yeah, I noticed the Bazaar. I sold some stuff earlier and bought a crappy leather coat when it popped up! Hooray for me!

Although, the games foreboding warning about wasting License Points frightens me. Although, it doesn't seem entirely correct.

Can't you fill out the damn board if you were madly dedicated enough? Seems like the only thing you would be wasting is a smidge of time.

I enjoy grinding, as I am a warped indivudal. So spending a few extra points doesn't bother me, perhaps if you were burning away points on the large blocks, I could understand, but oh well.

I am really hitting a mental roadblock trying to decide which directions to go first to flesh out my team into the roles I want.

Yep, you can fill out the board if you get enough LP. The only things you have to watch out for are Quickenings and Espers, which can only be purchased by one character each--then they disappear from the other characters' boards.

Once you can buy Golden Amulets, accumulating LP is no biggie. Especially when fighting enemies who give 2 LP down the road.

Oh good, my thoughts were right then. The small in-game blurb made it to sound like "Well, you might not be able to use Firaga III later in th game because you bought a +5 to Bagel Bites augment early in!".

Just popping in to say this game is fantastic so far, beats the pance off of ... well pretty well any game in the series so far. The voice acting is superb, the graphics are PS2 awesome and it still looks good on an HDTV for the most part. The music is also pretty decent stuff. The battle system , well I enjoyed it last year with the DQ8 demo and I like it even more now. It still feels like final fantasy but mixed with the best aspects of vagrant story. There's really nothing I can say is so wrong with this game that it shouldn't be getting 9/10 from any sane RPG loving critic. That said I've played a scant 4.5 hours of the game.

If I had to nitpick, the camera does kind of suck ass, by the time you get a good view of combat , it's usually over and well, basically I spend more time pressing R3 then anything else. Extremly minor nitpicks also include having to practically hug something you want to interact with be it a door or a chest but once you realize that it's a non issue.

I'm suprised by the bonus dvd- the history video includes the logo's of FF13 and it's offshoots even mentions FFX2 but they show nothing of FF3 for DS ? Or FF5 for GBA ?

I suppose they were trying to keep it a bit sony centric.

Figured I would mention it, but make sure to talk to the people you get Hunter's quests from again after receiving their rewards...

Reason being is that in some cases they offer up extra sidequests that are easy to miss...one of which eventually delivers a really nice bazaar item that increases the potential for rare-drops off mobs. Almost every hunter quest I've done continues on into some bonus so far after the kill is over.

Folken also spec'd +5 to bagel bites.

Are Techs generally worth throwing points to? A lot sound really interesting, but kinda uncertain.

Many are. Epecially Libra, and the ones that lower stats. and Achilles which adds an extra elemental weakness. Some people might like Darkness, too (and they will find it familiar, as well) The most useful one is ranged attack, though (no idea what it's called in English)

Make sure you follow the hunting stuff until you can buy Teleport Stones from the Bazaar, people. You'll definitely want/need them down the road.

Did you use a FAQ to find that damn thing? I was SO pissed when I was looking for it. You had to enter the area from the south or something, argh! So damn annoying. The only hunt that pissed me off in the whole game.

Naw. You just have to
clear the area of enemies, then exit and re-enter
. The hint is kind of vague, but it's not that bad. :\

I didn't, and he appears in different northern parts of the Giza Plains each time. Pissed me off too though cause the guy says "East of here" and then your Clan Primer says "Northern Bank of Giza Plains".
Damn hoes.

I am only about four hours in, and sofar I adore this title... the battle system takes some getting used to but it is an improvement IMO and the story & Setting is very interesting I absolutely cannot wait to get back from work tomorrow to play more.. and I have not had a feeling like that from a game is quite some time.

Everyone is saying the enjoy the game and the story rocks [so far], while the same people from Japan were harping the same schpiel. Keep on playing, boys.

They also said KH2 turned into a complete mess at the end. Look how that turned out.

I haven't enjoyed single Japanese RPG this generation. Which is odd considering that it was one of my favorite genres last gen, if not the favorite. I played and finished FFVII, FFVIII, FFIX, Xenogears, Chrono Cross, and others.

This gen I tried to play: Skies of Arcadia, FFX, DQ8, and Valkyrie Profile 2 to name a few... but I just couldn't get into any of them, I didn't put more than 1 hour into any one of them (with the exception of FFX, which I played for about 10 hours before losing interest), the genre has become so stale and tiresome to me; I can't afford or be bothered to read pages upon pages of text and invest the time to learn intricate systems that will never be used in another game again.

With that said, I really want to like FFXII, I played it for a couple of hours so far and I think I like it better than any RPG I played this gen, but I'm not sure if it will grab me long enough to finish it.

Will I ever like another jRPG again? :(

Stick to MGS games. :lol

Or stop listening to GAF about RPGs. I hate every "current gen" RPG you mentioned except FFX and FFXII.

You need to play:

Shadow Hearts
Shadow Hearts Covenant

It sure does bring back that feeling of helplessness from FFXI at my point, exploring around in a field with higher level monsters patroling and casting buffs on themselves :(

Just wait until they aggro you and you have to zone.

"Dude, just prep Steal and run for it".

I got away after a couple of tries, it was pretty cool. I may have had 2 party members, though. One as bait while the other got away.

I don't really understand some of the complaints about the controls....

You can practically make the game play like any other RPG with gambits.....

I made
Fran
the head of my party, just couldn't resist! Right now...4 hours in? I think?

Shouta said:

Oh, I've already had that happen. I've been fiddling around in the Dalmasca Westerlands and Giza Plains before I was susposed to.

In the Westerlands, I was just trying to poke around for the NM you were susposed to hunt. But I was only like... level four at the time, and everything was level 10+. And needless to say I didn't exactly have a huge assortment of abilities and consumables.

Lets see, there was the time I trained two of those Yagudo looking things, three Wolves and one of those Spiny Horses and had to zone.

Then there was a time I was fighting a level 10 Wolf at level 5 and it charged a special and one shot me >:(

Then there was the worst; The time I went into Giza and, well I was pretty happy to see some lesser mobs. So I poke around, I find these adorable little bunnies. Well, like any game player would do to anything that exists; I walked up and smacked it with my sword.

That ****ing rabbit took off and came back with like THREE friends, and just laid into me, I drank a potion and zoned :(

I'm having a ball just exploring and making an ass out of myself so far.

Got a whopping 50 minutes into the game. Despite the medievel type setting, I can't shake this Phantom Menace vibe I get from the first city. It's really weird.

Almost fell asleep because I stayed up to late the night before. Will put some hours into it tomorrow. Not a big fan of the camera yet. :P

The best thing about gambit in this game?

Libra.

****in finally. A FF where the stat examining function is actually usable, rather than a wasted opportunity to use the attack command.

That said, they're a ridiculous number of traps in this game.

FF10's 'Sensor' ability says hi.

I don't remember FF10. I've purged it from my memory. PURGED!

So Red... what's your cheesiest strategy... the one that seems to be working on every encounter and then some? spoiler it if need be!

Well, in FF10 you could inexpensively attach 'Sensor' to weapons (just 1 Ability Sphere), and Yuna could get a weapon with it in Besaid, and it showed monster HP and elemental weaknesses, and I think that's what gave some info about the monster, too.

Well, it depends on what aspect you are asking about 'cheese' in FF12. LP? Gil? Gambits? I know one set of Gambits I use is helpful to know and went over my head the first time, but it allows you to do some stuff very early in the game Gambit-wise, much earlier than I initially thought. It's just one aspect of using Gambits to reduce going into the battle menu less and sooner in the game.

Wow, there are people actually compelled to go hunting in the beginning of the game instead of following the storyline? Well there really isn't a storyline in the beginning anyways I guess. Go to A go to B go to C, repeat. Pacing is a little lame there in the very beginning and Vaan is sort of a non-entity as far as the story is concerned. Hope it speeds up eventually.

Anyways, I only hunted down the tomato guy thus far.

Gambit cheesing mainly. Although an abudance of Gil and EXP never hurts.

LP is too easy to cheese... just go hit the mobs that you can kill in one shot up with x2 trinket.

Zaptruder wanted to know what I do, so you may not want to highlight what's in this post if you don't want to know such things. Amir0x asked about gil earlier to me, so I guess he can read that part if he wants. Don't get angry if you highlight it and then get lots of stuff and..stuff.

Well, for Gambits, I don't think I really cheese..I really just set some basic stuff and keep it throughout the game; if I need to cast a spell on some enemy (like flyers), I just cast it. I have the thingy set to memory so it's not as annoying when I want to steal or cast a spell a few times on an enemy.

I'll put up some screencaps with a translation of what they are in spoiler tags (I have no idea what the stuff is called in the US version) of what I had set up the last time I played:

I'll indirect link the pics just in case.
http://redscarlet.paragonsigma.com/gambitvaan.png
Vaan had a gun this time. I prefer bows. But I didn't get very many bullets.
1-HP<40%, cast Cura
2-HP<20%, cast Curaga
3-Vaan, cast Haste
4-1 party member, use Alarm Clock (item that cures Sleep status)
5-1 party member, cast Poizona (spell that cures Poison)
6-1 party member, use Restorative Medicine (item that cures Confuse status)
7-1 party member, use Gold Needle (item that cures Stone/Stone Countdown status)
8-1 party member, use Eyedrop (item that cures Darkness status)
9-Vaan, cast Protect
10-Vaan, cast Regen
11-1 party member, cast Esuna (cures most status ailments, aka 'Remedy' spell in some games)
12-First visible enemy, attack

Those 'Vaan, cast ___' things are basically auto-Haste/Protect/Regen; if Vaan doesn't have Haste/Protect/Regen, he will cast it on himself, if he does, he will not cast it.

http://redscarlet.paragonsigma.com/gambitashe.png
Ashe had a bow, and was my leader, because I tended to get a free hit/kill with it.
1-1 party member, cast Araise (aka Life2/Full-Life)
2-HP<50%, cast Cura
3-HP<20%, cast Curaga
4-Ashe, cast Haste
5-1 party member, use Echo Grass (item that cures Silence status)
6-1 party member, use Oil Stone? (item that cures Oil status)
7-Enemy HP = 100%, Steal
8-1 party member, use Chronos's Tears (item that cures Stop status)
9-Ashe, cast Protect
10-Ashe, cast Regen
11-Self(?), use Libra
12-First visible enemy, attack

Like with Vaan, those cast ____ things work the same with her, and since it's set to only 1 character, one party member isn't stuck with all the rebuffs for everybody; just his or her own rebuffs.

http://redscarlet.paragonsigma.com/gambitpenelo.png

Penelo was my melee, with a katana in her hands.
1-HP<40%, cast Cura
2-Ashe, use Phoenix Tail
3-Penelo, cast Haste
4-1 party member, cast Vocal (cures Silence status)
5-1 party member, cast Brana (cures Darkness status)
6-1 party member, cast Stona (cures Stone/Countdown to Stone status)
7-1 party member, use Alarm Clock (item that cures Sleep status)
8-1 party member, use Restorative Medicine (item that cures Confuse status)
9-Penelo, cast Protect
10-Penelo, cast Regen
11-1 party member, use Panacea (aka Remedy item)/1 ally MP<30%, use Ether
12-First visible enemy, attack)

#11 is off, because sometimes Penelo would go and use the item to cure Poison status and stuff. I switched it to use an Ether if a character's MP fell below 30% for bluemax's vid/so it was something turned on.

It's not an absolute perfect setup, like if Vaan and Penelo both got Confused at the same time, but that rarely, if ever, happened. More or less there are a couple of ways to cure certain status, like if Penelo was silenced, Ashe could bust out with using just the item that cured it to fix her up. I placed Esuna and Panacea low on the list so hopefully someone else would use the cheaper MP cost spell or item beforehand.

More or less, I was pretty much ok through the game with these; I of course had different HP values and Cure-family spell depending on where I was in the game, but the above setup is what I used on the last boss in that video I made for bluemax without using the controller, so it worked for me throughout the game without doing all this so-called 'constant changing of gambits for many bosses'. It's not super advanced; pretty basic actually. I just added to the Gambits, I did not have to change them at all, more or less. But I fought very few mob hunts last time, too, nor have I fought a whole lot of them overall (maybe 17 or so in total).

The 'easy to miss' thing I was talking about is how to cure status ailments. I think you start with the '1 party member' gambit "if" statement, so you can use that to cure stuff long before you get the "if party member is poisoned"-type ones. Like with the self-buffs, the character will only use/cast the status fix when the ailment that can be cured with that spell/item has been inflicted. Penelo will not constantly cast Vocal or use Alarm Clocks with that setup.

As for experience, kenta put a couple of videos I made awhile ago on google video. There's one that I found an alright place for some good experience per monster
(over 1000), but it may take awhile to kill them. You can get there pretty early in the game. If you're agile, you can play keep-away with them, like I tried to show in the video.

For gil, kenta put up a video I made on google video too.
It works well, to me, and takes less time the stronger you are in the game. Shouta alluded to it earlier in the thread, but pretty much it just involves fighting 'Panthers' in the jungle place by the Ozmone Plains. You can steal/get dropped some Cuar Fur? (I think that's what they're called) that sells for a little over 400 gil each. Like in the video, you can go into the place, kill about 16 or so Panthers, then leave the area, WALK PAST the save crystal (chains reset if you talk to a save crystal) to a new screen, then walk past the save crystal again to get the Panthers to return. After about 4 or 5 trips, you should have 99 of those Cuar Fur things and some other items (sometimes a rare fur that sells for over 600), making 50,000 gil or more in about 15-30 mins.

For LP,
all I do is go 1 screen past the save crystal in the gil video/Ozmone Plains, and just spam the Aero spell on those big guys with axes. You can chain a decent number if you just go from the save crystal to the Giza Plains. Pretty good spot to get LP.

There isn't a vid for LP, but the other two are found here (look for XP farming and Money, Money):
http://video.google.com/videosearch?q="red+scarlet"

Hopefully that's what you were asking for, and I guess I did make a big 'helpy' post. Either way, have fun w/ the game guys, I just found out I got a paper due in a few days about a book I haven't read yet..so I guess I'll do that. I hope y'all have a good time playing. :)
