The Official Final Fantasy 12 (NA) Thread

@Nameless
trust the gambit system, u'll need it later on, square-enix done it damn good.

here's my gambit list (that's used on Vaan, Basch, Ashe, and Penelo):
1: Ally: any >Arise
2: Ally: any >Esuna
3: Ally: any >Vaccine
4: Ally: any >Handkerchief
5: Ally: HP<90% >Protectga
6: Ally: HP<90% >Shellga
7: Ally: any >Echo Herbs
8: Ally: any >Remedy
9: Ally: HP<40% >Curaja
10: Ally: any >Hastaga
11: Foe: flying >Holy, flare, shock, thunder, etc (any killing spell for any character that cant hit a flying monster)
12: Foe: lowest HP >Attack

"party leader's target" licks balls, dont use it.

for fran and balthier:
same as above except 9 and 11,
9 is 9:Ally: HP<60% >Curaja
and 11 is
11: Ally: any >Regen

(cuz fran and balthier're equipped with a bow, crossbow, or a gun, that can hit a flying monster, and is a magician).

i suggest u to have two characters equipped with a bow, etc, and be a magician (use mystic armor license), so they can stay far away from danger as they shoot, spell-kill, heal, etc, one long-range character with two close-range characters, and other long-range one with two other close-range characters, so u can level all of 'em equally, when the three're done, change to other three, then back, so on.
golden amulets (doubles license points earned) and embroidered tippets (doubles exp earned) help speed up alot, buy 'em when u see 'em.

Just got my copy today (went for the collectors edition). It's so nice to be overwhelmed by top end presentation, actually a pretty rare accommodation these days, at least you realize it when playing FFXII. After the whole introduction, when you get to play as Vaan, the game seems okay-ish. Not really that mindblowing graphics in the city (though the busy nature and the numbers of people is a feat on the PS2) with a lot of loading sections..etc may make you dread a chop-chop feeling adventure. But once you get out of town and visit Estersand for the first time the game just amazes. So much more free feeling than any singleplayer ff game before it and the graphics here are just insane for the PS2. Good amount of open space but unlike those other large rpg games, the movement and general combat pacing is smooth as silk. While I'm just a bit over an hour into the game, from reading other impressions and such I know the combat is taking all the right moves for me personally. With preference in western rpg and mmo combat, I may go as far as to say it is the best combat system in a singleplayer rpg yet and the layout for a gamepad is just perfect. With the gambit system almost sounding like programming I can't wait for it to open up. I hope websites don't forget FFXII amidst all the others when it comes to awards at the end of the year.

I was the unluckiest guy on the planet. I was fighting the last boss and trying to use Quickening 4 times. I never got a button icon while I kept pushing R2!!!! My party got wiped out on the last form. It sucked big time!

I'm enjoying this game like crazy...maybe a bit too much, so that leads me to my question.

I just left the Henne Mines, after beating the boss there. I'm a little under 25 hours in.. About what percentage am I through the game.

I ask because I'm enjoying it so much I don't want it to end.

You've got tons left. If you just do the story and ignore all else, its a good 50-60 hour game. Doing all the hunts, rare hunts, secret espers and other assorted side quests can easily double that playtime.

I'd say you've seen about 40% of the main game

About 30 hours in, im in that... ice canyon mountain thingy.. anyway. Espers, question about them, i got belias since a while but i havent assigned it to anyone yet, i might have skipped a bit on text since it was late and was rushing to find a save point to go sleep, but if i recall, you can assign an esper to only one character? Baaaaaaaaaaaaarrrgggh Goddamnit i hate these kind of choices, so i should give all my espers to the 3 main characters i'll use?

I just defeated
Gilgimesh(second encounter)
. Great boss fight. Good sh|t. At a couple times during the fight I was down to one character trying to revive others. Fun times.

Did you steal the Genji equipment? (great equipment which come from FFT: Genji armor, Genji glove, Genji shield & Genji Helmet(or something like that))
I love the music that comes from FFV during this battle.
Gilgamesh FTW

Oh for sure.
The best part is the end when you walk out of the area, he runs in and grabs the sword that he left.
Nice touch there by square.

That is my favorite fight of the game by far, if you do it at the right level where it's difficult but not completely impossible the atmosphere, music comedy etc everything is jsut so awesome.

Can someone explain mist/quickening to me? Im at this very annoying wall thing after just getting into the tomb and randomness of it all makes me want quit. Sometimes I can do 10k damage doing same amount hits and next time its only 3k?? WTF? Worse when I go to reshuffle because no party member is highlighted for next attack alot times it just runs out sometimes it takes 2 reshuffles but most of time I done up 8 and time runs out. What am I dong wrong that sometimes I can get only two hits off and next time 8?

Please dont say randomness, I not use dying in rpg so that can actually be cool thing but pure luck skills are not going make me want continue.

]do you mean the first wall? If so, just run away from it to the next area, the wall you encounter there really shouldn't give you any problems. Just level up some more and return later to defeat the first wall. People go all bat-shit over the demonsbane sword you can find after defeating the first wall, but it's really not that great a sword and it becomes useless faily quick. You can steal Blood Swords easily from the bats in the tomb and at that stage of the game it's more than good enough anyway.

I don't see what is "annoying" about that certain area. Lots of fun, some of the best items in the game, and one of the best places to level up.

Here is a hint: Go to GAMEFAQS!!111!! and load the map of the place... easy as pie.

I think I may have leveled up a little 'too' much. The last 3-4 boss fights have been VEEERY easy. I'm talking straight hack-and slash, not even bothering to heal, cure status effects, use quickenings, or bother with any of the bossess companions easy.

I'm level 47 when I
fought Vinuskar and Mateus
], and Level 48 when I fought
Judge Bergan
..I just checked on Gamefaqs to see where I SHOULD've been fighting those guys, and I'm about 20 levels higher than what they suggest..:lol :lol :lol And having 3 Deathbringer Swords probably had something to do with it too.

Don't worry, it's a short dungeon. It's when you come back later (optional) that you'll grow to hate the place :)
This man speaks the truth :(

I just spent a little over 2 hours trying to find the Zodiac Escutcheon after having acquired Excalibur and
Altima
thanks to the map at gamefaqs but still no luck. I'm pretty sure I'm at the right platform but there's no chest, is it random?
Also, my highest lvl character is at lvl 62, will
Zodiac
be impossible?

I'm level 47 ...

Some might prefer spoilers in that post. I was level 44 when I fought them and yeah, way too easy. I've levelled up to be even against all available hunts, and that has caused me to be substantially overpowered when compared to story enemies at the same point.

For the record my levels are high 50s, a couple at 60, and I just got to
the tower right after getting the airship
. I didn't mean to power level, I really only did it once in the
Tchita Uplands
but that was mainly to bring my three lesser-used characters up to speed. Otherwise, I've been doing every hunt I can, and not running very often.

Giruvegan
was very easy at these levels. I have a feeling some of the later hunts (I've finished
33
) will provide some challenge regardless.

All I have to say its:

HOLY SHIAAT!! RAITHWALL'S TOMB LOOKS BETTAR THAN ALL NEXT GEN GAMES COMBINED!!!

Seriously it looks amazing. I was floored.

I love this game.

Holy sh!t the trek to
Archades
was FRIGGIN EPIC! Final Fantasy X, which originally did away with the world map really felt closed in, and there was really no room for exploration(one of the best parts of the series). In FFXII though, ts like the world map from previous games, but to scale--its amazing.

After getting level 55 I was content to stop grinding, but then I stumble on the embroided tippets, so of course I'm about to embark on a megagrind later tonight..::(

what place has the highest level enemies? i can run around the necrol of nabudis or whatever with no probelm...

Yeah so can I. But my main place to leve up is the Golmore Jungles. If you go to the southern most tip(right before you enter feywood) and kill all of the enemies there initially, dark skeletons will begin to spawn from the ground. They're super easy to kill, give out just under 1000exp, and spawn quickly. You can chain about 85-90 of them before they don't spawn anymore.. I leveled up REALLY quickly doing that. Not to mention once you get a decent chain going they drop a ton of sturdy bones. You can get 99 of them in no time, and they sell for a decent 400+. I just got the tippets so needless to say i'm going to go back there later and level up even more.

Yeah, so I finally went back to the Giza Plains during the dry when I forgot to do the Cluck battle.....I was level 40 and it was a bit easier than I remember:P

In the sochem palace caves, awesome game so far, my chars are in the 40-41 range.

When do we get access to range ammo thats not onion? I always equip balthier with the best gun avail and he's freaking KICKASS, even though stat wise the gun is very weak compared to melee, its dmg is insane, and balthier seems to crit more often than any of my other characters. 2.5k crit i see it often and even normal damage he's up to vaan (sword) and basch (axe) in my party. Giving him better ammo would be godly :o

You get a lot from hunts and sidequests. Also a decent amount from the bazaar. I've got a crossbow currently with immobilizing bolts:)

One of the best gun ammo I have is the Wyrmfire Shot which gives like +3 to attack plus fire. All you got to do is do a little side quest in the village in the Estersand.

The attack power comparison is misleading. Guns do damage that is based solely on the attack power and (this part I'm not so sure about) the enemy type, whereas your sword does damage based on your strength and attack power minus the enemy's defense and one other stat (can't recall of the top of my head).

Guns have to do damage at least a little based on enemy type. I remember doing that hunt for the ghost in the sewers and him only doing 2 or 3 damage per hit, and that was with regular ammo. I know it ignores defense though, which is really powerful if you have a shot they're weak against!

Nameless, I'm where you are, and I need to know where I can buy some tippets.

You can buy them
When you first get to Old Archades, from the first merchant you encounter. I think hes called the "stranded merchant" or something like that. Anyway, all he has are accessories and items.

I will never play Final Fantasy XII again, and you can thank this guy:

ashepose1.jpg

I have a question:

I need to trigger a sandstorm in the Westersand so I may once again encounter the Gnoma Entite. No matter how many times I run in and out, nothing. There has not been a single sandstorm in the Westersand since the Earth Tyrant extermination many, many hours ago.

Does anyone know what I'm missing here? If I can't trigger sandstorms anymore, does anyone know where else I can find a Gnoma Entite or its Halcyon?

Highest level enemies are in the secret areas of the Henne Mines. There is a particularly lucrative spot where you can easily kill 20+ level 65 mobs in a matter of 20-30 seconds that give 3k+ exp each (before 2x exp). Areas of the Great Crystal also bring the pain, and while the enemies are not consistently as high level, they seem deadlier given the numbers (Mom Bombs come to mind).

As for some of the chests with the uber items... it depends. Sometimes it is just a really low chance to get the item, and for others there is a chance for another chest to spawn once you've opened another, and some other variations.

Sweet mother of jebus

I just found out what's underneath (Archaedes, later game)

Sochen Cave Palace

Past the Sealed Door

The freaking Hell Wyrm

That was a holy shit moment. So I get into battle... ok, it's tough, but I can handle this. Mostly. Right. Hmm, I wonder if those pips under it's health bar mean? Nahhhhh.

... several minutes later

Woot, it's dead!

Er. No. Those pips under it's health bar really ARE more health bars. Oh crap.

I don't even know how many HP this thing has. I do know there's no way in **** I'm beating it with my current party. Onward, I shall return later!

edit: Speaking of annoying sealed things

post feywood
Geruvegan

How do I open the Scorpio Gate? I thought it might have something to do with Cuchulainn (the Zodiac of Scorpio), but that did nothing. I couldn't find anything else exploring the area and mapping it out. Trying to avoid Gamefaqs, I went there once for something relatively innocent when I started and got a faceful of damn spoilers.

A little over 10 million HP... which is still only a fifth the HP of the final mark !!!!!

So, I started this game, and I already have to start over. Why?

How the **** was I supposed to know that I can't open certain chests during the game so I can get the Zodiac Spear later in the game?! Especially if I didn't have the guide! That's some asinine bullshit right there. I'm all for secrets, but the chest in front of Dolan's is only like 2 hours into the game! =(

So, unless there's some way to get what I said in the spoiler regardless, that's cruddy. =(

Alright. We can get
Zodiac Spear
in
the deeper Henne Mines
later.

The chance is about 1/100, though.

You can get that item... it is just much more annoying to do so. There is a certain chest in a certain secret area that has a 1 in 100 chance of having the item in question. By the time you are able to access that area do well in it, the item won't be needed however (and it really isn't THAT essential).

Damn. These fools really did take the FFXI style to heart.

Now I gotta worry about drops in offline RPGs too! :)

Finally finished the main game today.

I have to say this game overall was one of the more satisfying, full game experiences I've had in a while. I just finished X for the first time late this summer, and while I enjoyed it, this game just made FF seem so new and fresh overall.

I spread the game out over a month, but I didn't really notice any major dips in the storyline, imo. I did notice what seemed to be a short stagnant period towards the end, but the sequence of events leading up to the end was great to me.

I didn't finish all the hunts, or find any of the best weapons, so there's still plenty to do later. If Castlevania and Zelda weren't about to release, I'd probably go for the extra content, but I need to take a small break first.

For those wondering, my levels at the end were
high 50s, a couple in the early 60s
and the end was really no trouble at all.

9.5/10
