The Official Halo 3: ODST Thread

That poster is amazing! And I thought it was really cool of Bungie to invite an average joe fan like Rukari to the studio. No other developer does that! Anyone check the Youtube vid? I assume he's the one scoring near the end. Good update! Gotta love Inafune-san!

Reminds me of the Shotgun hallway in Blackout.

Yeah, I didn't know a thing about him until reading the update. It's really awesome that Bungie just picks him up and invites him that very day.

I outscored him when we competed to see who got to play the campaign. And I only played a total of 4 firefight matches with including the PAX showfloor. ;)

Nice shot of Inafune, though I really wish Bungie would give people something else to take pictures with. A prop of Sarge's cigar would suffice.

You can buy a cigar at Safeway. Massive sniper rifle, not so much. Also, Kirkland cops do not go on SWAT alert for a Sweet William.

Sarge smokes Cuban, haven't you heard?
Pretty sure we've dropped the embargo by Sarges' time. Though whether Safeway makes another 500 years is a fair question. They're really quite over-priced.

Yup, happens every time the host resets. Figured you'd have seen this plenty of times before but I guess people don't quit much from high level MLG.

You don't really get quitters when you go in parties of 4's and 3's. And unfortunately flag doesn't come up as often as I'd like. I love CTF.

They shot a lot of stuff for the xbox.com splash page too. I remember seeing a lot of new cool footage on the ODST squad interviews.

Tons of people quit in MLG lol. I actually can't believe I went in alone yesterday and played a tie CTF pit game where no one quit and it was close in every stat aspect. First decent game I've gotten in months. Even though one kid on my team was sortof being a douche.
Yes this is starting to wear me down recently. I play MLG quite frequently however I have only managed to hover around a 28 in the playlist. I play on my own and often top the board although I am often teamed up with a team of 30's whilst my opponents all seem to be second account 50s. Even worse however is whenever a flag game comes up I always seem to either get a team of serial quitters or I will score a team of people who need to take a shit as soon as the match begins, forcing me to defend for my life as I am outnumbered and outgunned.

Despite this I am determined to pass 40 in MLG. My highest rank is 47 in swat however I have been away for a while this summer and seemed to have left my Swat skills in Greece. I came home to find my thumbs just couldn't roll like they used to.

oh man I'm laughing so hard :D

I'm getting the impression that Firefight legendary isn't just a load harder than anything we've encountered before, it's ten thousand loads harder and served with a bucket of impossible.
Can it really be that hard?

I look forward to trying (most likely in vain) to conquer this feat. It must be done, it will be done. Believe.

During the after-PAX shenanigans, a group of four that had done very well - got to round 3 on Heroic - got cocky and decided to play Legendary. They didn't get through the first round. It was a slaughter.

Yeah, I'm loving the look of the rooftop mission (and Windward, which is what it's from). I do love me a good sniping mission.

What has given you that impression. Having only played a bit of Firefight on legendary and much more time with heroic, I think the difficulty is very comparable. With 4 player co-op it shouldn't even be a problem unless there's some skulls on in the campaign or you get pretty far in Firefight. When I played that firefight match I only died once but my teammates had wasted the rest of the lives and left me alone to face a chieftain, some brutes, and a couple smaller dudes. I was one brute away from clearing the round but died. That was only one round but it was a brand new map, with inexperienced teammates, and little experience myself.

It will be Total Carnage. It will probably, actually, be harder than Vidmastering Marathon.

Bring it. I'll even just use the Plasma Pistol, and only the melee for that, even.

(I'm kidding, that'll just be for a Legendary run through, maybe.)

*clears throat* N-n-n-not... one... round? and there's around 300 or so rounds?
I just can't fathom how difficult round 300 must be if round 1 is insanely hard. Maybe we'd get sent back to the lobby instantly because the game knows we're not worthy of trying. :(

Oh! The conflictions! :S
Which will I believe? I guess I'll have to wait for myself.

I know a lot of people found H3 campaign on legendary to be difficult but for me it was more... moderate, shall we say? I miss the days of games being impossible without great determination. I hope firefight won't allow for waltzing around like a fool without repercussions but I don't think I'll be prepared for the all-singing-all-dancing-end-of-the-world-there-is-no-hope type difficulty.

Nah, one round is 15 waves. (Honestly, the whole wave/set/round structure is a bit too complicated - I could never tell when I was transitioning sets). I think it was the Chieftains at the end of the round that did them in.

I think it's really going to depend on the map. Legendary on Lost Platoon won't be a big jump because you're in vehicles for the most part. But Legendary on, say, Crater or Windward is very different because of the increased numbers and smaller map size.

All that said, I'm expecting the jump from Heroic to Legendary to be similar to the Halo 3 campaign, which wasn't all that brutal. Four players should be able to make it a few rounds, especially since we'll be able to talk to one another (which wasn't happening when we played at PAX).

5 waves per round - 3 rounds per set - 99 sets in total.

Is the pacing in odst supposed to be better in firefight? I love horde in gears but, it's a drag to do 1 wave, wait for them to spawn, do another, it gets tiresome, i'd prefer a more smooth set of onslaughts.

I don't know what difficulty or how many players were in the match, but from this image it took Brian an hour and 40 minutes to get to the 15th round. The rounds obviously get harder as time goes on thus making it take longer to complete each subsequent round. Ignoring that and simply extrapolating Brian's match out, it'd take 30+ hours of continuous play to reach round 300.

When Ghaleon and I played Lost Platoon on Heroic it took us 40 minutes just to reach round 3 of the first set. Of course thing's woulda gone faster if we had more people but Firefight matches in general are going to be ridiculously long.

I keep mixing up sets and rounds (hell I wrote it into the OP and still get it wrong). There's 15 waves per set, or that many between Chieftain rounds and skull toggles.

Though I don't think anyone's gotten much past set 7, much less 99. Once Iron turns on, it's ovah.

Waves come pretty close together, and seemed to overlap at times. I think there was a brief pause between the sets/rounds, but never more than a few moments. The pace was really brisk.

Yup, I'm pretty sure it says "reinforcements" when it triggers each wave and it doesn't wait for all the enemies to die before starting that next wave. Not sure if it's strictly based of time or how many enemies you've killed but there was only a brief moment if any time at all to catch your breath between waves. At the end of the round it gives you time to collect your shit and respawns things IIRC.

Couple the ever increasing difficulty per round with performance deterioration due to fatigue and you get exponential difficulty and inevitable failure.
It would be a bit easier to handle, I imagine, if it followed the same structure as GoW horde but I'm not much of a fan of that. The idea of your enemies being constantly reinforced sounds fantastic, I loathe that you have to seek out and kill every enemy in horde before you can ascend to the next wave.

Eazy, what difficulty did me you and dan play Windward on? Did we not complete like 3 rounds? ( we fought the chieftans 3 times? didnt we?)

Halo 3: ODST - Behind the Muisc

Special from 1UP. It has the theme of Halo 3: ODST and "Rain". Good stuff. Love your music Marty.

I wonder if this man doesn't get enough credit for the music of Halo...

Have been playing Halo 3 multiplayer recently to polish my skills for ODST, and watching some of my old saved films bringing back great memories. Really can't wait for ODST. Also reading Halo: Contact Harvest which is actually making me want to play Halo Wars, which I never got to play...Enough about that though, bring on the silenced pistol, firefight, and
engineers!

Rain is awesome. I can't wait to listen to the rest.

This. This... and this. :)
It was so good it deserves a new word. Fantasimalistawegasm?

Knowing the Halo soundtracks I have no doubt that the rest of them are just about as fantasimalistawegasmistic as Rain if not better.
I think Peril from H2 remains my favourite though.

Want nao! I'll just loop Rain for the next 10 days, I guess. :D

I know Marty always says he does his own thing, but I think there's some Shadow of Colossus influence in the ODST soundtrack.. which is a good thing IMO.

I can't stop listening to Rain, so incredible, thanks Louis Wu for those links.

My favorites are probably Halo, Covenant Dance, Under Cover of Night, Peril, Earth City, and the Mombasa Suite(mostly the part that was remixed as "Out of Shadow" in Halo 3). Though, the ODST theme(and the one theme that has been in the ViDocs, the one that is mostly Drums and Guitar) is getting high up there.
