The Official Halo 3: ODST Thread

I'm about to add an achievement list to the OP, so if you're avoiding them for some reason, beware. (Thanks to Louis Wu for pulling it together.)

I'll be doing an updated format to the list when I get home. I'm really digging the ones to ODST, as they encourage different play tactics. I never cared for most of the Halo 3 MP achievements.

The profile hotlinks for the GAF maps in the second post are also only about a quarter done...

Halo3 MP achievements were a real bitch. I remember back in the day when every pregame lobby was a cacophony of begging for people to line up for sword tripple kills and Splaser double kills and others.

I wasn't sure what you meant, so I went back and checked. That section was a copy/paste of Eazy's list- I didn't even realize there were some profile links in there (links are hard for me to see mixed into the text if they're not bolded). I'll fill it in a bit more later tonight. Thanks for pointing it out.

(On a semi-related note, I'll have my last map, Whiplash, in file share tonight as well and update the list, now that it's been beaten up a bit in customs.)

Just saw the Achievements in the OP, good stuff.

One thing I noticed is that Bungie replaced the swords you see on the shield that let you know of the difficulty with Silenced SMGs, noice.

And :lol :lol @ the picture of the "Trading Down" Achievement.

I still need:
Save this Film
Killtacular

Had 16 + Kills no deaths on SAndbox during a flag game, but did not get the medal for perfection...as for killtacular that seems super hard on a mythic map.

Wait for the next Grifball weekend; Killtacular's not hard in it.

I still need Maybe Next Time Buddy and Two For One from the original set, plus Killing Frenzy and Save This Film from the Mythic set. Dunno when those are ever gonna be cleared...

Oh and I think the Achievements that detail the missions in the game are kinda spoilerish if you stretch your imagination a bit because each picture for their respective mission is using the "flashback" item you find in New Mombasa, so some of them could be seen as spoilerish if you just take a guess at what happened. :/ (see Tayari Plaza's Achievement picture).

Really digging the site upgrade. Can't wait to start filling up that ODST page :D

I was just trying to get an idea of what the ODST battle chest would look like so I put this together:

There's still a few medals I don't know about or have forgotten. I remember hearing about one for beating a round as the last surviving member of the game, the rest, I have no idea.

Question: You will get to be in the Reach beta for purchasing ODST correct? I can't remember how that works anymore.
Yeah, it will be unlocked through the disk's extra menu at a later date. Like Crackdown with the Halo 3 beta.

Yes. Just like with Crackdown, there's an option on the ODST main menu that will open up once the Beta starts.

Edit: Double Beat

  • Halo: Reach Beta Access | Public Beta for Halo: Reach begins in the spring. Access to the Reach Beta will be granted via the ODST disc, through the "Extras" menu. Think Crackdown and the Halo 3 Beta.

Are you talking about Halo 3? I said I didn't like the MP achievements of that game, not Campaign. (Which were too few, IMO.)

Edit: Wu is in my head, rearranging the furniture.

Whoops. I missed the "MP" part of that. :lol My bad. MP achievements were too out there. Got most of 'em though :B Only missing like..three.

Yeah, I know, dumb question that I knew the answer to too. This kid's comment on the Kotaku article about the ODST Xbox bundle made me second-guess myself:

Nice idea putting the beta in. Some folk will pick this up just for that.

It's funny cuz it's true.

I like how instead of appealing to the masses by just putting the BR (and I guess AR) into Firefight, Bungie just took both out and tried to create an amalgam of each of them: the silenced SMG that somehow has like triple the range of the SMG in H3 and the pistol which is now scoped but still can't compare to the awesome that is the BR triple burst.

:lol I'm not gonna lie, the Kanye meme is one of the greatest in recent memory. Especially considering a lot of memes aren't funny nowadays anyways.

Really nice. That's a lot better job than I would've done, and yeah, the ODST achievements are really sweet.

In my very short quest to get my campaign count to 117 (at 116 currently, I'll play one more level sometime this weekend), I came across a very awesome find.

In my run through of all three games last December, there are a couple of things that make their appearances across all three games (the lock and key Forerunner symbol, for example). One of which is a Forerunner piece that, up until now, I thought was only in Halo 1 and 2.

In Halo 2 you can find it in at least one level (it's the only one I remember), "The Great Journey." The piece appears in Halo 2 in exactly the same way as it does in Halo 1. In Halo 3, however, while it is there, it's in the form of a hologram.

Really glad I found it. Wondering why it was in Halo 1 and 2 but not 3 was nagging at me.

Lol, found this in my Service Record. Thought it would be appropriate:

It was a pic I took for one of the Screenshot challenges to get the Mythic Map Pack early. I thought it was pretty neat. :lol

The sentence is supposed to go like "If you want it done right... go ODST". That's basically the name of the shot.

You (and anyone else who finds this sort of thing interesting) should read through Hindsight. We didn't find every H1/H2/H3 connection, but we definitely found a lot of stuff that is really cool. Including the symbols you mentioned:

This pattern of symbols has been repeated very often throughout the series; it was seen as early as The Silent Cartographer in the first Halo game (see here). One part of the symbol may be recognized as being quite Monitor-esque.

Awesome. I did the same; the ODST's do some weird stuff.

Really nice find Dax. Nice to know that the environmental artists do their homework very thoroughly. I wonder if they have a meaning, or a purpose, or are just decoration.

Yea...That's how I got that last 3 achievements I needed in Lone Wolves back before they added the extra achievements. Good times good times.

I've always wondered about the origin of those stains. It's a shame Dax's inquest didn't actually come to any sort of conclusion.
It's likely some sort of memory problem, i.e., a technical issue. The textures make sense after the Flood show up, but not before.

They were all pretty doable in one runthrough of the game.

Well, there were only 6 campaign achievements, and I got three of them the first time through. And one of them was Marathon Man, which took me awhile to find them all. :lol The only tough one to my knowledge was Too Close To The Sun, because shooting down a Banshee was sort of a pain in the butt.
