The Official Halo 3: ODST Thread

Alright, I realize I'm quoting from a couple pages back, but...

Sorry for the Lost spoilers thing, I've edited the post so it says they are Lost spoilers now. I figured that since my post was a response to your post about Lost, that people might figure out that the spoilers, since they weren't for ODST, were for Lost. My mistake. But as Flipyap said, they weren't specific. They were along the lines of "I wonder what's going to happen."

Scarabs are listed under the vehicles. Scarabs in Firefight confirmed?:D

Very cool.
that would be so scary, a scarab comes in at the end of a round instead of chieftains, I'm frightened just thinking about it.
So I REALLY want to get the Annual Vidmaster achievement (everyone in ghosts, legendary, skull). My GT is Alivor, send me a XBL message if you're willing to help me. I'm trying to do this before ODST drops.

Keep out a weather eye on here in the evenings. I think there are a few people that still need the achievement. I am usually down for a run also.

My gold subscription ran out the other day and I have Lost Odyssey, Tomb Raider Underword, Chronicles of Riddick, Dead Space and Far Cry 2 in my backlog. I think i'm going to try and wait on buying ODST for as long as possible.

It's gonna be hard though.

I have no reason to be proud of making this, but I'm posting it here because it makes me giggle.

And, I'm back out of the thread on my media blackout. See you all next weekend.

Actually Romeo (Tough, argumentative) should be Raphael and Mickey (the smart one) should be Donatello.

Romeo is Raphael for exactly that reason.

Mickey is Mikey because I couldn't ignore the similarity in the names, and they're both kinda playful characters. I didn't want to give the contemplative Dutch the playful Turtle. Also, name alliteration.

But hey, we've now officially talked about it more that I thought about it initially.

Been reading the main Ascendant Justice articles dealing with Halo 3 (Terminals, the Librarian and Didact, Mendicant Bias) and I came across this:

Despite the fact that the naval garrison was aware of the likelihood of just such an attack, their ability to effectively defend against it proved insufficient. This has always been the enemy’s [modus operandi]: [flood] your opponent’s ability to process information with so much noise that no meaningful resistance can be put into action.

[3 minutes] ago those same population centers began disappearing under brilliant flashes. This was not an ill conceived, poorly implemented counter attack; it was a deliberate denial of resources – those resources being the remainder of [CE-10-2165-d's] population.

CE could mean "Combat Evolved" and the "10-2165" could be a date. Seeing it, I remembered the Halo Timeline on Xbox.com.

2164: INTERPLANETARY WAR
UN-sponsored military forces began a pattern of massive buildups, culminating in the first real interplanetary war. After the successful Marine deployment on Mars, recruitment drives and propaganda tactics strongly bolstered UNSC (United Nations Space Command) forces. UN forces defeated Koslovic and Frieden forces on Earth, then began a systematic and dedicated drive to crush their remnants on the various planets they held throughout the system. At the conclusion of these brushfire conflicts, Frieden and Koslovic forces were defeated in the face of a massive, unified and very powerful UN military.

While the description is listed under 2164, there's no indication that this Interplanetary War ended in 2164, because the next significant event is 2170.

In a way, the Flood and the UNSC were not unlike each other (metaphorically, of course) during a period of time: they were both massive unified entities that were involved in ending a certain conflict on particular planets. It's a bit of a stretch, I know, but it's just a passing thought.

I had a temperature of 102.5 at 4AM this morning and then I had a sweat storm that knocked it back down to 100.2.

Wow. Didn't know that and sorry to hear it. Speedy recovery man.

Although...I heard that at a 103 temperature you start to hallucinate and Dax's posts make sense. You should try it!

(Just messing with you Dax)

You'll be over it by launch unless it hits you severely. I came back from PAX with it and after three days at home all I had was a headache and a cough.

If Google calculator is to be believed, holy crap. Get better soon. I have a kid in my class, and on my lunch that got swine flu from camp. Left. Recovered. Went back to camp for some stupid reason and got swine flu again. I'm afraid.

Pretty sure that's not possible unless he got some other strain of it, but whatever.

Swine flu sucks, ODST rocks.

I really like the bungie.net redesign, looks much cleaner. Only thing that kinda bugs me is the blank left and right sides, feels kinda empty even with the color gradient.

Also for some reason it really amuses me that I can see that only 33 people have played ODST in the past 24 hours.

WTF, you fuckers are playing halo and I'm battling the swine flu. FFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUU
Same. Living on ibuprofen, missing career fair, and you sobs playing odst early. what a shit day.

Well, I'll be ready to join the ranks this coming Tuesday. I was torn between this and NHL 10 and my need to shoot people on the interwebz won out.

Mind spoiler tagging the first two words of your post? Or maybe the entire post? There's a new vehicle or two, and that might be it. And it's considered a spoiler. :\

It's on the damned site in clear view, I saw it just looking around the stats. Hardly a spoiler.

I read the description it sounds like a fusion coil, that's all. They give you a kill when you explode enemies near it probably. Something like that is hardly mobile.

I've been debating the price and value of this game for months now, but playing through a portion of the campaign yesterday convinced me that this game is indeed worth every damn penny of the $60. So I plunked down the whole amount on a preorder today while I was out shopping for Mrs. Timelike's 30th birthday presents.

You win this time, Bungie!! Can't believe I ever doubted you.

Good to hear. I remember being a bit surprised to hear you tearing into ODST initially. ;)

Once again, the retailers here in Saudi Arabia broke the street date and started selling the game as soon as the shipment arrived. :D

Sometimes it pays off to be a Saudi Halo fan! :lol

Regular Edition: 199 Saudi Riyals = $53.06
Special Edition: 299 Saudi Riyals = $79.73 (The US special edition goes for $100)

This is probably the best $80 I've ever spent on a collector's edition (considering the fact that it comes with something USEFUL!!)! :D

FWIW, there's been plenty of vehicle discussion and it's all been tagged so far. You're the first not to.

But fair enough. I didn't want to know it, but I ran the risk. I read part of the chat with Staten and he said there's a new vehicle, but wouldn't name it so as to not spoil it. So I was hoping to be surprised. But that's what I get for readin' the thread. Oh well.

When in doubt, [ spoiler ] it out.

@hazimov

I was wondering why my stats wouldn't upload on the website. Thanks for clarifying.

If you live in a port town like LA or Long Beach, copies are now floating around at your local mom and pop retailers and stupidly staffed larger chains as well, I would suppose.

You've already completed it on Heroic? How would you compare it to the other Halo campaigns?
Halo 3 is like a keg. It does the job well, and everyone has a lot of fun.

ODST is like a fine wine. Sip it slow, it still does the job, but it has woody undertones and and a lot of subtle perfections that only time and passion could create.

So which do you like more? Or is it hard to choose?

Oh come the fuck on. If that wasn't worth posting than nothing is. At this point there's no reason to look up any new ODST info, all we can do is wait. What's there to derail? More spoilers? And since when was it a crime to try and make that wait easier by linking to incredibly interesting pieces of work done by a fellow Gaffer?

EazyB, how big are the AX 720s because my AX Pro came today and its GYNONKULOUS

as in, "needs its own power supply" gynonkulous wtf
Mine is comparable in size to the ones we used as PAX to play Halo 3. It has its own amplifier which needs a power source.

All this rabble is spoiler free, for your enjoyment:

ODST's campaign is much better. Not sure how it will play with 3 other players, but I couldn't see it ruining the experience.

The narrative is much easier to follow this time around. While bouncing around the timeline through flashbacks may seem like a more confusing way to present the story, it actually works really well.
The narrative works so well in ODST, it kind of shows the glaring faults with the story and cohesiveness of the story arc presentation in general with Halo 3.

To me, M.C. and Cortana weren't as interesting in the Halo universe as the entire struggle of man versus the covenant. I found myself more emotionally drawn to the marines identifying and revering M.C. than the Chief himself. So the ODST shift in perspective was really awesome. Most of the characters feel pretty fleshed out. You definitely feel more like apart of the overall struggle through gameplay and story, than the god who leads the charge.

The gameplay is what everyone remembers from the halo series but, the big change is you have to play alot more conservatively and you have different tools for the trade.

The engine is showing its age at this point, but there are a lot more setpiece moments in this game. I can remember a few occasions where let out a Neo-like "Woah" at moments.

I wasn't disappointed spending 60 bucks on this. It's more Halo 3, but it is in no way some bastardized add on. At least that is my opinion so far.
