The Official Halo 3: ODST Thread

As for the wii-website review, its pure nonsense, comparable to the earlier review from associatedcontent. The guy complains about the game being dark and having to use the visor often....which is the point. The visor is terrific and I wish that it could be retroactively applied to some really dark levels in Halo 2. Its infinitely better than the crappy flashlight. And you'll play the bulk of the game in flashbacks so its not even a real issue anyway. The visor is perfectly integrated with the visuals and you'll never complain that its annoying to use it or you're staying in that mode for too long.

I don't know, man. I think the VISR should've just been on as a default. It's almost always more beneficial to the player to have it on. Unless you're looking directly at the sun, there's not really any reason to turn it off.

Also, the game will be 5 hours...if you play it on Normal. But then aren't other Halos around the same length in Normal? Maybe an hour longer? Play it on Heroic like any self-respecting Halo fan, and I assure you it is a a full length campaign. No question. The haters are grasping at straws with the whole "expansion" connotation. If you picked up any previous Halo for full price, there is no reason you shouldn't pick this one up as well.

Yeah, when you play the levels on Easy, you see how really short they are in terms of time and geography. It was taking us between 3 and 8 minutes to finish the missions on Easy. On Legendary, it was taking us between 20 and 40 minutes.

I thought this too, but some of the firefight maps I saw (
Chasm Ten I believe
) combine dark and light areas of the map, requiring you to juggle between the two while fighting off covenant. I assumed that the reason they kept it a toggle is that it may have some sort of disadvantages we haven't seen, or maybe there is some sort of light/dark sequence in the game.

For taking your time and enjoying the scenery, you'll want the VISR off because you can't see any of the world's true colors and details with it on. When there are Covenant patrols around every corner, though, you damn well better have your VISR engaged, soldier!!

Seeing someone on my friends list, you to be specific, playing ODST was a bummer. I'm not going to lie, I contemplated sending you a horrible message to try and mar your experience as much as possible.

Sorry, dude. I thought about appearing offline, but I thought it would make me look cool to be seen playing! We'll be kicking Covenant scum all around Mombasa soon enough.

managed to get the game early...and was too late to send a friend request to the Gaf Firefight gamertag, so anyone who has the game already add me, cause firefight sucks alone :(

Can't hold back the excitement for ODST much longer. I just finished reading Contact Harvest and now I'm reading Cole Protocol. I also never got around to getting Halo Wars so I went out and rented that to help hold me off until ODST. Can't wait.

I don't know where in CA you live, but a little birdie told me a retailer in Long Beach will be carrying copies tomorrow.

PM me for store, I don't want the gaflurker army to beat you to the punch.

You're entitled to your opinion and Imma let you finish, but ODST is going to be the greatest game of all time.

Oh I know its going to be the greatest, too bad there is no way I'm gonna find it early at all. :(

WIGGLE THE WIIMOTE TO MAKE HIM NEIGH OH MY GOD

Wow Bungie, congrats! My fiance just independently pre-ordered ODST! I lol-ed, but then realized the awesomeness of it all. I think it was when she watched the live-action commercial. It sold her. She wants to support the franchise to see a movie come out too.

Good games Falagard. And I don't want you to think I got off because we were losing. I had already been playing for a while and I needed a break. Good ish though.

It was pretty interesting. I guess the Spartan and Brute armor variants from Halo Wars really are cannon now. And maybe it was me, but seeing those poor little Grunts dispatched was kind of brutal. I felt bad for 'em. :(

Edit: For those who didn't watch on the East Coast, they covered ODST a little more and previewed "The Babysitter" from Halo Legends. It was three separate snippets actually.

Was nobody watching Spike TV just now?

I was, the snippets from that one episode of Halo: Legends were somewhat underwhelming, but considering they showed what I would guess is less that five minuets of three unrelated scenes, I'll still give it the benefit of the doubt.

However WTF at the Spartan looking like a chunky guy in a green suit.

It's anime and covering an IP that's probably pretty foreign to Japanese anime companies; I wouldn't expect much from the writing. The ODST sniper was drawn and written to be a very clichéd arrogant character. Then he messed up like a rookie by alerting the Brute and proceeding to losing his Rifle in the water. Setting expectations to low.

I did enjoy the Spartan vs. Brute action though. And yes, the Spartan was drawn to be very wide and fugly in some of those shots.

According to the Waypoint Twitter, they showed off Halo Waypoint during tonight's GTTV, how did that look, Blueblur? I really can't wait for Waypoint.

They must have shown it in the beginning because I didn't catch it. :(

I didn't see them discuss Waypoint at all actually. I know I saw a graphic pop up near the bottom left corner that read "Halo Waypoint launchs on Nov. 5th" or something to that effect early on. But I don't recall them actually even saying "Halo Waypoint" during the show. All in all, it was a lackluster episode of GTTV aside from the "Babysitter" snippets.

Fact: Frankie wore a red shirt.

Blurred gamertag? Why would someone blu -- ruh roh.

Last time I posted one without it blurred I got 45 god damn friend requests and uncounted messages about how to capture video/screens. No thanks.

Edit - sorry, I should clarify (since there's someone currently messaging me about capturing) that I don't mind being asked questions on the forums. I just won't do it over Xbox Live or PSN.

Edit: Holy Broken Frames, Batman

Wow, just now bothered to dip into a Halo thread, and wasn't aware you could share Custom Maps so easily. That said, here's my most recent one. I may have to put a few more up there for everyone to try...

Quadrant
Four Launchpads on four paths. Dogfights, Snipers, & Territorial Warfare.

I had fun building it, and there are effectively 4 launchpads, each with their own defenses (though one of them feels fairly exposed, it does have some decent cover). Built for aerial dog-fighting and tower-to-tower sniping. It has a lot of... interesting parts. Each of the four Quadrants has strengths and weaknesses; some have great sniping positions, some have great weapons, some are easier to defend, some have interesting layouts.

http://i31.tinypic.com/j7rtr8.jpg
The more exposed launchpad, firing across at what I like to call the "Corporate Quadrant" because of the arch-based facade. Each base has some advantage in that you can fire on the flying vehicles from certain ones (for example, this bunker is heavily exposed, but can bring down all three bases' flying vehicles pretty quickly, especially with it being armed to the teeth).

http://i29.tinypic.com/256wtpt.jpg
The "Double Deck" Quadrant; there's actually no way to get down to the Banshee from the base above; it's connected instead to the central platform via a tunnel. If you're heading for the easily-defended base (only one with an energy barrier), you're running on top of this tunnel.

http://i30.tinypic.com/2m4zp0h.jpg
Overall view. From left to right, the Double Deck quadrant (with Banshee down on the flight level), Corporate Quadrant, Highspire (Yes, you can get on top, it's sniper-oriented but fairly easy to infiltrate), and finally the "Exposed Quadrant".

Give it a try, see if you like. I'll upload more to my file share later... Apologies if my posting / sharing in this manner is a bit of a faux pas.

Not gonna lie, I enjoyed the Spartan Brute fight.
Also, for those who are not a fan of a bulky Spartan, perhaps thats just how this one is? Seems to be pretty strong, considering the one handed block of a hammer swing.

Not terrible, but not very exciting either. I'd say I'm slightly impressed (though the Spartan looks awful) but my expectations for something like this after Gotham Knight are next to nothing. Still seems to me that Halo and anime just do not mesh well together though.

HOLY FUCK

I just drove both boys down to the football game at the high school, and as I returned, I noticed a padded envelope sitting on the ground outside my garage. (I work at home, so this is the first time I've left the garage today.)

It's got a copy of ODST in it. It's been there since... I don't even KNOW when. This morning?

FUCK. I could have been playing all day.

k, gotta go now...

Got mine too yesterday! But I was asked to keep it offline until Sunday morning =(

Seeing this almost makes me embarrassed to be a Halo fan. The first part where they're sneaking around and killing the Grunts was okay, but fist fighting with Brute Chieftains and stopping a Gravity Hammer mid-swing? Yeah, might as well go ahead and make that Spartan yell for 20 minutes powering up trying to become a super saiyan. Jesus Christ, that was horrible.

Meh, seems like exactly what you'd expect from Halo + Anime.
