What?! If anything, the games are a complete embarrassment when it comes to displaying the spartan's true speed and strength.

They are incredibly powerful in the novels and lore and I'm pleased to see them in action as such.

If you want a disabled, stiff, and slow spartan, play some halo 1-3. In the lore, they're viewed as barely sub-superhero. Legends, you know?

Just because something is anime, doesn't mean it's going to be terrible (although, most are, imo). Take Animatrix, for example.

Yeah, I'm going to go ahead and assume this post is sarcastic. No way is a Spartan, no matter how strong, going to disregard his gun and run up to punch a Brute Chieftain in the stomach. Like I said, all this needs is the Spartan screaming for half the episode "powering up".

Are you trying to say it's cliched or something? The stupid lengthy "powering up" segments are done to pad out the length of shows on the cheap. This was not that, although the animation was rather crude anyway.

People seem to view Spartans based off Bungie's story-telling in the games/cinematic, rather than the books or stories themselves. In Halo 1, at least, the Covenant felt like a dangerous specie and you were up against the wall for survival. In Halo 2 and 3, not so much.

I thought those two clips were pretty cool, and I can't even stand general anime.

Also, Halo Wars portrays them closely to the books, as well. You'd have to play the campaign and watch the cut scenes to know, but it's pretty amazing there as well.

I'm saying that all it needs is the powering up segments to make it complete: DBZ in the future.

Only thing I think was good out of Animatrix was the Second Renaissance, so I don't think that's a very good example. It also has much that's very typical of derritive anime.

I've already said how I felt about the rest of it. The whole scene where the ODSTs and Spartans are sneaking through the forest and stealthily taking out Grunts is pretty awesome, but from the point where somehow the Spartan catches a gravity hammer mid-swing and struggles against the strength of the Brute Chieftain to the end of the clip is just plain dumb.

Unless you're talking about something else...I've only seen the videos Olivero posted above.

The Second Renaissance was awesome, yes. While that was only but a small part(I think it was like, what, 20 minutes long at the most?), it still proves my point that anime can be good and get a good story across. It doesn't have to be crazy over the top nonsense like the Spartan never firing a single bullet and punching a Chieftain in the stomach DBZ style.

The spartan almost got gravity-hammered and dropped the gun when they rolled out of the way. Considering their speed and power, I don't see how going hand-to-hand is strange?

And that definitely wasn't a chieftain.

It's strange because that's not what Spartans do. At least, that's not what I think they do. I follow Halo's story strictly from the games (I'm trying to read The Fall of Reach novel I bought a few weeks ago; trying. :P), but Spartans don't do that. Halo is all about weapon combat, not UFC fights with Brutes.

I thought, overall, the clips were alright, but some of decisions (like Thermite said, a Spartan dropping his weapon to have a DBZ-esque fight with a huge Brute) are not right.

And, correct me if I'm wrong, but don't Gravity Hammers have some sort of shockwave that emits from it for every swing, or can Spartans suddenly negate the whole point of a Gravity Hammer just by catching it, unaffected, mid-swing? lol

But like I said, some of the parts in those Legends clips were pretty sweet (especially the section with the Grunts), but we have to keep in mind that this is just a small preview from one episode of the Halo Legends series. We'll see on the rest of Legends and if it holds up - in time.

It wasn't. Check out the books, Spartans are badass to the extreme. Bungie portrayal of them in-game does absolutely no justice. I'm pretty sure John, or another Spartan has gone hand to hand in the books.

Well, lore-wise, they are all about hand-to-hand and weapon combat about equally. Many, many times they are forced to fight covenant (and their trainers as children) with no weapons. In fact, they're masters in both arts.

Trust me, if you have an imagination and make it through the books, you'll see that the games do absolutely no justice to what it should be like.

Hopefully Reach caters to the idea more, but that doesn't change the fact that ODST is going to blow me away :)!

I know, I've read Fall of Reach, First Strike, and Ghosts of Onyx (never got around to reading any of the newer novels yet). I wasn't about talking specifically about whether or not Spartans are strong, I was talking about his general attitude in the post. If you look closely, the Spartans are portrayed pretty damn well in the games. Your speed is MUCH faster than the other Marines, and I don't ever seem to recall all the various Marines and/or ODSTs being able to jump completely over Elites and Brutes.

And, iirc, hand-to-hand combat has happened maybe one-three times out of the books I read and even then, it was done with a melee weapon straight to the head for a killing blow, after all other options were exhausted (ie being out of ammo, etc), not some punch to the stomach.

A thought that just struck me, that I guess is only tangentially related to ODST.

ODST thus far has the BEST intro sequence in any Halo game, by giving a different view on that moment from Halo 2 as well as really grounding you in what it's like to be an ODST. For Reach I'd like a similar treatment for the Spartans. Like, it would be REALLY awesome if the tutorial/prologue took place over the years as whatever Spartan character you control is being trained at Reach. Jumping through the years from conscription, to augmentation, to MJOLNIR... man, that would be the most rad thing ever.

100% agreed. Being able to play or at least see them grow up and go through training would be amazing. Some of the best material in the books, IMO. It would be such a missed opportunity if they skip it.

It amazes me how Bungie has managed to change our perception of what we want from Halo in terms of storytelling and how the Campaign should be played, but also raised the bar on those types of things and more with just a campaign expansion.

All the more reason to get absolutely batshit excited for Halo: Reach. :D
 
I fear that they may not take too many risks with Reach. Halo has a very specific formula that hasn't be changed until ODST, and that was a spur of the moment project. I'm not sure what to expect.

They caught the mistake :lol, but mine is reserved at gamestop. My buddy's the one who actually paid for it using my newegg account and shipping info. All he asked was I hand it to him still wrapped lol.

I'm actually glad he has to wait because at first, he made it sound as if we were going to co-op it all day everyday haha, but as the order was processed further, he started making it sound like he was going to rush campaign(solo) and get the achievements asap. Now we're on the same page as almost everyone else, and I get $20 off my next newegg purchase ;).

And I fear that they make too many. Who the fuck knows, Reach can be anything at this point. Sequels to multiplayer focused games are weird as fuck.

I never really thought about the AR being a prevalent feature, but now that you mention it I'm interested to see how the AR holds up against the silenced SMG, scope and all, range and damage wise.

In the books, sure, but what I've seen of ODST is making the in-game Master Chief look quite lame.
When an ODST can do stuff like jump over a Brute Chieftain and punch a tank until it explodes, the only real moments of badassery exclusive to the Chief seem to be in the cutscenes.
And even then, they mostly involve falling from/in orbit, attached to a piece of alien metal.
 
You get a $10 credit towards a game when you preorder ODST @ Amazon. Just as good as the TRU deal with ECA if you live in one of the states where you don't have to pay tax. :)
 
I remember the first day of Halo 3's release quite fondly. Everyone on my friend's list was playing Halo 3; nobody was playing anything else. I expect somewhat similar results for ODST.

I think I've seen some videos of ODST firing a AR(can't fine one off hand), but does anyone know if they changed the sound, when it fires, I never really paid attention!?
 
I ordered my copy from Tesco and It came this morning, shame I'm in work to 5.30. Saying that might bugger off early now.

THIS!!!!!!!!!!

If there is one thing I hope we get from Reach is the fact that the Spartans are extrememly powerful and you actually feel that power when playing. Though MC is awesome, in the game he doesn't feel anymore powerful then main character of COD4, or any other FPS.
