The Official Halo 3: ODST Thread

AdventureRacing said:
Nothing AA has said is wrong and the only reason people would get really offended is if they themselves have an agenda.

Halo 3 and ODST are not the best games graphically. I can admit that. Halo 3 is still pretty much my favorite game this gen but that doesn't mean i have to say it's perfect in every way.
Once again...

As for the graphics, different outlets define that category in different ways. Some only define it as technical prowess. Others include the quality of the aesthetics into the score.

You're simply a troll (or an idiot if "troll" is too touchy) if you can not understand that concept. The game is visually more appealing than Halo 3 because the art direction is superior, even though the tech hasn't changed.

Also, lets not be coy. His first post in this topic is a complaint about a review score being too high in one section. We ALL know ODST isn't in the top echelon in the graphics department, but its aesthetics ARE extremely appealing. The art directors did a wonderful job in creating a moody atmosphere. So please, save us "the voice of reason". If it wasn't a troll (an intentional ploy to get a rise from fans and to knock the game), then it definitely was an ignorant comment anyway that deserved to be called out.

Overall it may seem like the gameplay took a turn for the worse but the main complaint being made is that your not like Master Chief so it makes sense not having his abilities.
It may sound like horde mode from Gears of War 2 and theirs no arguing that Firefight is an offspring of that but Firefight adds a little more fun factor to it.
This new weaponry fits the mood of the game very well seeing as how your trying to be a sneaky investigator in the streets of New Mombasa.
They're all just very poorly constructed. That's what's bad about them.

Probably will be drowned out due to reviews, but this is probably the best kill I've ever gotten in any Halo game. Could someone maybe render it(no Bungie Points left..) so people don't have to download it to the game? It might be GIF worthy. I was laughing for the rest of the game due to that. :lol

I'm sorry, Blueblur.

It's hard to believe that websites like The Koalition are taken seriously enough to receive review copies from a publisher.

Back on topic. I'm not surprised by the review scores. It's a Bungie game. Of course it's going to be excellent.

NIIIIIICE!!!!!!

I am glad to see the game getting great reviews. That's what these are too. I've never understood why people think anything below a 9 is a bad score. Either way thanks to these reviews Tuesday can't come soon enough for me. Hopefully the UPS guy will come in the morning and not after 4PM like normal.

Just saw the Giant Bomb review, and I am PUMPED. Had an awesome birthday party today, and in less than 24 hours I will have ODST, so yay for that. Now I just hope I can beat Batman tomorrow so that I won't have that in the back of my mind as I spend the next week stuck in Firefight.

EDIT: also, goddamn, GB must be getting loads of cash from Microsoft lately.

Some neat artwork here from the Canadian launch party.

Quality of the pics aren't the greatest due to a crappy camera.

Wow, better reviews than I expected. I was expecting solid 8s pretty much all around. Gametrailers and Eurogamer reviews are probably the ones I'm most in line with at the moment, but I'm glad to see it scoring highly from other outlets. It's a great game, but I thought it would be docked some points for value. Not that there isn't a bunch there, but that nearly the entire multiplayer component is 2 years old.

Firefight is just plain awesome though; I absolutely love it. The campaign is also rock solid and may be my favorite next to Halo 1. The only thing that bothers me about the campaign is I can see the Rookie sections dragging on replays, since there'll be no point in searching out comm stations (really that's my biggest motivation when playing as him :lol ).

Anyway, you guys who haven't played it yet are in for a treat.

Gotta add that the Rookie sections definitely aren't boring on this first time through; I find them very engaging. Those sections feel very fresh, a new take on the Halo formula. Not sure how I'll feel about them on subsequent playthroughs however, though maybe I shouldn't guess on that until I actually play it again.

Well, the reviews have more or less settled things in my mind. Sounds like there's a lot of length that can be gained from ODST, and most of the reviews are very positive.

But alas, I am poor :(. Will have to pick this up later on.

Does not compute. Episode Two is longer than Episode One, yet they chose to combine it with Team Fortress 2, a game with super-long multiplayer legs (it's been going strong for 2 years).

I love worldwide releases, it always means us here in NZ get it a few hours before everyone else. :D

Well, except those who have it before release date of course.

Seriously. I just went to check the quicklook and it kind of felt like I was visiting an ODST fansite. The review page is especially overODSTfied.

Not that I mind. Hope the hats fit! ;)

better reviews than I was expecting tbh, I thought it would struggle with cynical reviewers being just a rehash of Halo 3 and even inclusing the same multiplayer maps.

The nowgamer review is ok, seems like a reputable site to me, people just have to remember its the reviewers opinion and everyone might not see the game the same as other people.

VideoGamer - 9/10
Team Xbox - 9.4
Worthplaying - 9.5/10
G4 - 5/5
Eurogamer Port- 9
CVG - 9

Am I missing something here or aren't those all terrific scores?

Why is everyone bitching?
I was expecting 7s and 8s given what we know about the length of the campaign and the fact that it's still based on the H3 engine. So those are surprisingly good score as far as I'm concerned.

Those who were expecting 9s and 10s across the board were just insane. Wait for Halo Reach for those expectations.

Most big sites obviously tend to let people who enjoy the genre in question in general, which is why most high profile games tend to get high scores. While I enjoy some shooters, games like COD and Halo would certainly not get anywhere near as high scores if I were to review them. I suppose it makes sense but it would be more refreshing to see more variance. Reading the actual review helps naturally.

e: this doesn't really apply seem to the nowgamer reviewer though. It's perfectly reasonable to consider all the halo games quite mediocre while at the same time being a huge shooter fan, however.

Smells like an expansion labelled as a full price game to me and imo graphics are starting to look a bit dated and basic. Still, it'll sell millions, everyone at MS will be high-fiveing, and there is probably a lot of mileage from the 'horde' gameplay element if you are into that (which I love in the CoD WaW zombie maps). I feel it'll do the same as GTA4, everyone buys it, and a month later you end up with lots of trade ins clogging the channels. Which is when i'll get a cheap copy as the sp story is probably good fun, if a bit short :)

They won't sell it back if they wanna play in the Reach Beta

I've never personally questioned the price of the game too much as I got Halo 3 recently and very cheaply bearing in mind that ODST would be released soon. That meant I decided not to buy the Map Packs. But for +10million people who already own Halo 3 and have owned it for 2 years now, what does the second disc offer them? It makes it more strange considering that Bungie/Microsoft allow those premium maps to be available for free within several months after release so eventually you'll get the same maps in ODST. What about those who have even paid for those maps when they were released? Does the fact that ODST come with new two maps justify paying for the second disc in total?

Halo has always been about the Online experience and even Bungie can testify to that so I'm surprised that they agreed to this price for the title - they usually have a reasonable perspective of value.

Of course this isn't helped by the fact that Modern Warfare 2 is released in just over 5 weeks. When you think about that and how you may not want to divide your time between two Online games, I can understand why many are resentful about the pricing.

Can't wait for tuesday. I wish I would have played through Halo 2 and 3 in preparation. Maybe after ODST.

Any I Love Bees fans wishing this was the secret link between halo canon and the ILB viral thing from 2004? Shit was rad. Best halo story ever, and it's not even recognized by bungie.

I always wished the superintendent was somehow related to the AI from ILB, and all that.

Only the first map pack is free. I paid for every map pack so far and have no issues buying ODST at all. Honestly, I'd still pay full price even without the Multiplayer disc.

this

I don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but ODST install sizes are pretty small. The first disc takes 3,5 Gb of space while the multiplayer disc needs only 3,4 Gb.

EDIT: Oh, and I didn't realize until the second time around that
Orbital has a cameo in the epilogue of ODST
.

With due respect, I think you'd find a heck of a lot more people showing hate to this game if it was only the campaign + fire-fight for a full price. I was mainly drawn to it by Firefight, but also because I don't have the premium maps. But even then I don't know how long I'll be playing the game. I'm sharing it with my brother. Luckily I can justify the price but I do empathise with those who are frustrated that they cannot.

Yeah I don't expect everyone to be able to justify the price, and as a 'hardcore' Halo fan I'm probably not the best judge of value, but for me it's an awesome package.

Disappointed with Jeff/Giantbomb's review, one or two many paragraphs spent explaining things rather than commenting on well they worked (much better in Jeremy/1up's review).
Either way, both think it's very good, which given their impressions on their podcasts, I'm not surprised.
Roll on Tuesday :D

Reviews are just about what I expected. Happy with the results. :)

Not happy with this:

ODST release date: 22nd September.
Start of uni term: 22nd September.

Which one do I go for, GAF? :P

Eurogamer mention the price point as being an impediment to a higher score... but I think their comments section indicates how silly that is when only the US version is full price, we get it about £30 rather than £45 here.
