If you want to get a copy at Gamestop, I would highly recommend trying to reserve a copy, even if it's mere hours before the midnight release. EVERY time I've ever checked GS to see if they had a new title on release day, not only did they not have any extras, but they sneered at me and gave me the "you should've pre-ordered" routine. It seems silly, but if you don't pre-order, somebody else might waltz in tomorrow and put their name down on a copy that could've been yours.

They usually have more than enough for preorders and walk ins...but it kinda depends on the clerk you're dealing with I guess. Last Midnight release we had (Madden) we had enough for preorders and walk ins.

Of course, if your store is known to do that, you might want to just reserve it.

Believe it or not I just got around to hearing the sample tracks.

Neon Night, Rain, and Traffic Jam are awesome. Traffic Jam really gives off a secret agent feeling.

EDIT: Are we going to be able to customize the ODSTs in firefight mode?

In a way, I kinda don't want the game to come out just yet. I'll have it on launch (Amazon Prime, for the win), but I'll barely have time to play it in the week. Then, in this thread, I'll have to read about how much of a blast you guys are having in Firefight, Heretic, Campaign and whatnot.

That dong d-dong dong dong!

Oh and Blood, that sucks bra. What a terrible friend. Totally shoulda snagged you a copy. You should /remove from your friends list IMO.

Hey HaloGAF- Just a question: I got a gamestop text saying ODST will be available "Tue AM"- Is this considered a midnight release? When I pre-ordered about 2 weeks ago, the southpark-esk character told me they didn't know if it would be a midnight release. Anyone got any info that could help me figure out besides calling them?

I'm going to be lazy and copy and paste from the OP:

09-17 | Gamestop has published the list of stores holding a midnight sale for ODST. Swing by here and see if yours is on the list.

24 hours until I take off for the midnight sale, which I suppose is something. I'm going to be rather distracted at work tomorrow.

24 hours to go for us Central time zoners! (But secretly 23 for me seeing as how I'm driving to a Gamestop under the eastern time zone.)

I posted mine like 10 seconds too early. I was anticipating a delay. Also, tried adding GAF Firefight2 but I received a "does not exist" error? GT Olivero
It's GAF Firefight 2, with a space before the 2, Ghaleon has it written wrong in the op.

Mission Accomplished

Holy crap, because I haven't made many animations, your frame timings were confusing the fuck out of me for a few minutes. I would export my gif thinking that all the frames were 1/10th of a second because I clicked on a random frame in your gif and that's what it was. But at the beginning and end when he spins, the frames are there for 2/10ths and 3/10ths of a second, and the frame of him standing straight forward lasts for a full second.

Glad to have taught myself something. :D

Bravo. Looks good.

Ars Technica released their review, reviewer didn't like it much:

The Good

* New campaign missions adds to the Halo story
* New multiplayer maps, two new weapons in single-player
* Good voice acting, with some funny lines
* All released Halo 3 multiplayer content on one disc
* Firefight mode is a blast

The Bad

* Short campaign
* Sub-par graphics
* Rehashed multiplayer
* Cheesy music
* Set pieces lifted from past games
* Linear game play in missions
* Hub level used to pad length
* Low value for the money
* Co-op that breaks the game's internal logic

The Ugly

* The fanboys reaction to a panned Halo game, on both sides of the fence
* Microsoft learning it can get away with charging $60 for $30 worth of new content

Verdict: Rent

Might Goozex this one down the road. Are what this person says about the hub layout correct? Non-linear exploration was something I was actually looking forward to.

Giant Bomb's review is the one that is a bit disappointing for me. They're giving out 5/5 a little now and then and 4/5 only translates to 80%.

I think it got a 4 and not a 4.5 or 5 because they want people to know that it's worth getting but don't want it to explode into a shitstorm since the only video and banner ads on their site are for ODST. That coupled with a 5/5 for what was originally marketed as a side story would be much more likely to receive unwarranted skepticism.

Giantbomb did add a disclosure statement at their end of their review:

Disclosure: The game featured in this review is or was an advertised product on giantbomb.com.

At least they're open about it.

I know, it's completely contrary to what they said on Listen Up.
It is completely contrary to the awesomeness of the music in general. If there was one thing I always loved in Halo it was the music. This time around, they did something a little different, but the game is a little different. It fits.

Actually, it translates to 4 out of 5 stars. Fuck this metacritic/gamerankings bullshit. I hate those goddamn sites with a passion.

First time posting in this awesome thread, I guess the hype finally caught up with me, I'm not really a big MP fan but I love the Halo universe and have purchased every Halo game (apart from Halo Wars) on day one, I remember waiting in the rain to pick up Halo CE from my local video store, I ran home with the copy in my hand and remember being blown away by it, I guess a big part of my love for the Halo franchise comes from early nostalgia, but even being aware of that it doesn't stop me from getting all warm inside at the prospect of another SP Halo campaign, I really can't wait to pick up my copy of ODST.

Has anyone got a link to the starting menu score (music) for ODST ?, is it any good ?

The Ars review aside, what's the general consensus so far for the single player campaign? The reason I ask is because i'm more of a casual Halo fan and i'm a Silver user (rules out multiplayer). The whole stealth/open world aspect really grabbed my attention and Ars seems to be in the minority opinion about the game, so...

Well you're right. I guess it translates to Giant Bombs own review scale:

5/5 Stars: While we don't believe any game is perfect, we recommend this game without reservation.

4/5 Stars: Still very good and easy to recommend, though it doesn't quite live up to its full potential.

3/5 Stars: The halfway point. An inherent appreciation of this game's specific gameplay style, characters, subject matter, and so on may play as big a role in your enjoyment as the actual quality of the game.

2/5 Stars: This game's problems outweigh its good qualities.

1/5 Stars: This game will make you wish you had died in a fire moments before turning it on.

Its shit like that where you can tell the reviewer is really has it out for the game. Its the kind of person that complains Lord of the Rings is "too epic". I mean, get off your high horse man.

What the fuck?
Yeah, the music is fucking great. I seriously think ODST is right up there with the first game for me, campaign-wise, and the music is just sweet, sweet icing.

Also, someone asked about the hub world and non-linearity. You can play flashback levels out of order. There's plenty of room to explore. The "levels" themselves are linear; they play like condensed versions of stages from past Halo games. But the hub is very open. Gives you a whole city to move around in, and after the first level or two you can choose wherever you want to go whenever you want to go there. There's not much to do in this overworld, though, besides search for scattered audio logs and trigger flashbacks. Still, I think it's what sets ODST apart from other games in the genre. Really singles it out, makes it feel fresh.

The "stealth" aspect isn't really there, at least not much more than it was in "sleeping Grunt rooms" from the series' catalog. The battles are given a tactical emphasis, though, because there are lots and lots of routes around enemies and ways to get the drop on them or avoid them completely. There are groups of patrols wandering around, scattered snipers on rooftops and balconies, and sometimes Covenant troops stationed at specific bottlenecks around the city. More often than not, you'll spot them from a distance and be able to ask yourself "what's the best way to tackle this situation?"

I really really love it, far more than I expected to. The gunplay still feels very Halo, but there's something in it that's foreign for the series. I can't quite put my finger on it, but it feels much more satisfying than the past two games for me.

I still haven't put as much time into exploration as I'd like, but it's the most sandboxy part of the game, you get out of it what you put in. I can understand how someone might feel like that, but the game does reward you for exploration with the audio logs and supply caches.

ADDENDUM: From an early impression of my first playthough in a previous post, I said it looked like the friendly AI's ability to drive a warthog were improved, unfortunately on subsequent playthroughs, I was wrong. They still drive like idiots.

The general consensus is that this is a refreshing new take on Halo that also combines the best of Halo gameplay. ODST is more balanced and refined than Halo has ever been. It plays like the "greatest hits" of Halo.

BUT, if you're not going to play Firefight or Halo 3 MP, then I would suggest waiting a while before plucking down your cash. You'll probably find some people selling ODST Disc 1 for cheap in a few weeks. If you ARE going to play Firefight then you will absolutely be happy with your purchase.

Cheesy music? Really? Thats just crazy talk.

13374 Woodforest Blvd Midnight launch, Houston Tx.

This should be a good one. Last time they had pizza and drinks. Though I preordered at my own store, so guess I wont be attending.
