The Official Halo 3: ODST Thread

woah loving this game, just got 34475 lasting 19 mins in firefight on legendary wtf, to be fair I was camping a bit but im stoked with my untouchable killing spree none the less :D

The guy that finnished me was the 2nd chieften with the power hammer, fucking thing took about 8 clips on various weapons, 4 grenades and a melee attack :lol

I just got over 100000 but I almost didn't leave the spawn area at all :lol :lol

To kill the chieftains take out their shields then shoot him in the head with the pistol, their helmet falls off with about 5 or 6 shots to the head.

I finished the campaign yesterday (in splitscreen co-op), and while I can see good intentions in the game, resuming the game halfway meant that I could see a clear difference in quality in the second half.

But before I get to that: GhaleonEB in the end credits. Nice.

Anyway, the first half of the game may have the annoying tutorials (imo), but the difference in gameplay and artstyle make the first half a solid experience while playing as the Rookie and the first 3-4 flashbacks. After that though, it drops fast and clearly betrays a vast amount of rushing. And it would appear that rushing makes the worst come out of Bungie, as it did with Halo 1. Yes, it's generator time!
I'm talking about taking out the sandbox gameplay that is displayed earlier in the game and massive re-use of assets later in the game, including missions that are several firefight maps (or the same corridor) stuck together in the later missions. Sure, they are intended to be more intense in terms of number of enemies and plot wrap-up at that point (and that they do very nicely), but you can't miss the design practise that has haunted Bungie since Halo 1.

It's highly inconsistent with the premisse of the first half and its gameplay. It's as if someone said: let's just go Master Chief Halo from this point onward. A case of severly mistaken identity, I guess.

naggin about plot and other specifics from here. Do not select if you are still playing the campaign.

Finding your teammates on the backdrop of the city at night was really neat, as were flashbacks at daytime. However, the second half of the game seems to go into "vehicle corridor mode" with Rookie on foot sections in between, which make the flashbacks seem like: "oh, it's another vehicle section", until of course the Rookie gets a vehicle section of his own. What doesn't help, is that Halo Havoc code is "whobbly" for good reason (explosions make things fly around), but when a road is littered with small crap, it just makes your vehicle go all over the place except forward.
The backdrop for that Highway level is awesome though, having capital ships swoop in above you, making it clear that this is where Halo 3 'begins' and the two games have been connected at this point. The Superintendent is awesome too, allthough his 'leading' was never really well executed during the Rookie sections, imo. I still relied more on the map than on its 'advice'.

however, allthough I've felt that the timescale and backstory had allready been written to oblivion (Halo Wars, basically, but ongoing from Halo 2), the section past the credits says "one month since... [game events]". What the hell? I'm supposed to believe it took Master Chief a MONTH to crashland back on Earth? That Halo 2 took place in a month? That a large force of Brute lead Covenant Dreadnought ships would NOT glass the basically defenseless Earth in a matter of DAYS? How is this in any way believable when I've clearly experienced a very different timescale with Halo 2,3 and the plot of ODST itself?

That small bit of information really pissed me off, to be honest.

Just beat the game. Took me 3 hours and 50 minutes :P

Really short but so, so fucking good. Definitely the best encounters in the series.

Time for each level:
Tayari Plaza - 17
Uplift Reserve - 15
Kizingo BLVD. - 16
Oni Alpha Site - 18
NMPD HQ - 17
Kikowani Stn. - 24
Data Hive - 36
Coastal Highway - 31
Total Hub time - 64 but I didn't explore much and only found about 10 recordings

God some of you are smashing through the campaign. Myself and 2 mates just spent 3hrs playing on Legendary and only completed up to Kizingo BLVD. Mind you we do every now and then go on team killing rampages for shits and giggles but theres no way we'll go through the game that quickly.

AH! Three hour sleep is the only sleep a true man needs. Gonna get some grub and get my ass back online.

Decided to skip my only class today. No way in hell was I going to be in ANY condition to go and, stay awake and pay attention :lol .

See you guys online shortly...

Just a different style.

I started the campaign on Legendary last night. 2.5 hours for the first three hub segments plus two flashback missions. (Sort of like you, I guess. :D ) And I was really, really enjoying myself. Yeah, these can be speedrun - but I have much more fun exploring.

Eazy wanted to get from point A to point B, I guess. Nothing wrong with that. (I'm expecting to see speedruns of the entire game, on solo Legendary, come in at under an hour, eventually.)

I wonder if Bungie will do any SP DLC for ODST?
They've said there are no plans for it.

Game was on my radar then off(sorry) for quite some time but now I don't think I can pass this up having played all the Halo's.
One question, do I need my Halo3 disc anymore to play H3 MP? May be a dumb question but I haven't played H3 in 6 months and I stopped following the ODST threads. I'm back(maybe)!!
:D

Thanks :) Tis a shame to miss out on expanding the Halo universe even further. As long as they add even more Firefight stuff, I will be happy. :D

I am really interested in seeing what Reach ends up being.

BTW, has anyone confirmed if ODST is worth installing?

If I had more energy I'd make a in depth post about my impressions but I'm tired as hell and need to wake up in 2 hours. I had a fucking blast though, even got some Firefightin in with Trash.

Oh, 4 player co-op shenaniganry will definitely go down in the future. I just wanted to complete the game before becoming too exhausted so I only spent about an hour in the hub world. I explored a bit but didn't really get a good feel for it. It was just my first runthrough of many more to come.

Still really surprised with how fast one can complete the campaign missions though. They're awesome, maybe even the best Halo's ever offered, but concise.

If you're waiting for Firefight DLC for ODST, don't hold your breath.

I can't help but feel that they should've redone the Halo 2 cutscene for the New Mombasa thing in addition to the text scroll at the beginning to give people a better idea of where this fits into the Halo universe if they haven't been paying attention to the media.

Bungie said no DLC for ODST, but who knows what the future will bring

That's fine really. 6 months from now there will be a Reach beta, then 6 months after that will be Reach.

I tried adding: GAF Firefight2
but it apparently doesn't exist? What is the actual gamertag? I want to do it via 360, not PC so the link in the OP isn't helping.

so I haven't picked this up yet, I hate to be 'that' guy, but I think I'm going to wait for a price-drop.

Halo is one of those series that I never really get too hyped for, but then when I buy them down the line, I fall in love with them. Halo 3 has been my most played online (console) shooter, I stuck with it for a solid month or two, which is a lot for me.

Anyway, the reason I'm posting: how's the story? I've heard that it's a bit of a mystery, or something like that. That sounds super-interesting to me. Is it well told?

What armor is Tricia Helfer wearing? Is it a spoiler? If so don't tell me. If they never specifically say it, then please explain.

Facepalm at the guys that rushed through it, specially if halogaf regulars.
yep. i didnt explore the city at all, but it still took me about 7 hours (on normal). what the hell are these guys doing?
Soundtrack Question: when is it available for download?

Just finished. Solo heroic. WOW!
I enjoyed that campaign a lot more than Halo 3.

No complaints about the length either, it was actually longer than I expected.
Can't wait to get stuck in to some Firefight tomorrow, but now it's time time sleep.

Thanks Bungie!

All my worrying about Amazon's shipping was for naught. Apparently it actually shipped out at some point yesterday but they didn't feel like updating the tracking info until this morning. Bastards, causing me pointless annoyance. Oh well, it was put on a delivery truck this morning so it should be waiting for me when I get home from work or, if not then, when I get back from class.

Hooray! Now to stay the hell out of this thread before someone forgets to spoiler tag something. Which I actually should've been doing like 3 days ago. Oh well.

Got a chance to sneak home for half an hour and play up to the first flashback (in a lecture right now >_>, which I ran back to).
Can't wait to get home :D .

Yeah, my Johnson code is fucked. The scratch stuff is shit and it's messed up so I can't read the correct numbers. So dumb.

FUCK! Does this game not autosave? Did I do something wrong? I got it at midnight, played a couple hours, and just got up looking forward to continue before I go to work. It's starting me out at the beginning. I tried loading up last save and that's where it put me. WHAT FUCKING MODERN GAME DOESN'T AUTOSAVE OR AT LEAST TELL YOU? WHY WOULD THEY DO THIS?

No customers & nothing to do @ work is making for a very slowwwwwwww day. Even though I can browse gaf and watch any movie we got here.. lol

Free "Prepare to Drop" Premium Theme on the MP for gold members. Think it's a limited time deal.

Hmm scratch off you say. The GS codes have the simple pull out tag.

Edit: ODST at $50.99 on Amazon atm. Would be a deal with the ECA discount as well.

I went through solo on heroic. Shoulda done Legendary but thought it'd be a lot tougher than it was.
Yeah, I decided to Solo on Legendary and so far it's been about right, although I only played for about an hour (got to
the second beacon
) before jumping over to four-player co-op on Heroic with friends, which was far too easy.

Right now I've played as much Firefight as anything else. Haven't even looked at the new maps.

I played it on another 360 that I don't own.
If you want to believe that this game is great and worth it, then more fool you.
You have fallen into the halo hype trap and will buy up anything halo.
Let's face it, the game is nothing more than an overpriced expansion powered by and aging engine that should have been buried long ago.
What else uses the halo engine? EXACTLY.
I know the framerate stays at a constant 30fps but it does that with how many compromises?

Barso said:
Who said I hated the franchise?
I played a game to see how it played, what's wrong with that?
I sold my 360 because I was fed up with the hardware problems and live not being worth it, what's wrong with that?
I did not like this game,we all have an opinion just like we all have arseholes, what's wrong with that?
SIMPLE, I played it and was totally dissappointed and saw the game for what it is. A cash in.
But who can blame MS or bungie, if they have a successful franchise. Then that's what franchises are all about, making as much money as you can as long as you can keep the franchise alive.
Also do you not think that if bungie could hire out their engine, they would?
It's all about money at the end of the day and thank god nobody else uses this engine.

So I check my tracking number just now, and it's not in my town, and then I see.

Shipment Delayed
madcrazy.gif

It was on schedule last night when I checked. Plus amazon marked it down nearly 10 bucks. I should've just bought it today for 10 bucks cheaper, probably would've gotten it at the same time.

Oh well, not much I can do about it now.

Edit: Fuck UPS, it was in OK, just a couple states over (I live in new mexico) and a flight was delayed due to "mechanical reasons", ok that's fine, these things happen. What I don't understand is why it made it's way to kentucky, 700miles in the wrong direction, ugh. That's more distance than it was from me at it's starting point.

Picked up my LE copy from GameStop this morning. I am giving the game to my son for his birthday, which is tomorrow. Quite the dilemma: do I give my son an opened gift; or hold off until tomorrow night? Decisions, decisions.

Man, people over here are really friggin excited for this game. I know a couple people who pre-ordered it and they don't even own a 360. I'll probably sucker a playthrough off of them.
