The Official Halo 3: ODST Thread

Im a few missions in and im REALLY digging it thus far. The atmosphere, music, and voice acting is all just fantastic.

Im also taking my time and not rushing through anything. Really enjoying exploring the city.

Impressed I am.

I finished the game about an hour ago and I decided to try Firefight by myself on Normal. I lasted for quite a while and got to 100k points on my own so those 200k points achievements should be easy to earn.

Ugh went in on Legendary, and made it to the first hunter pair. Now I am going back to heroic. Crazy ODSTs having to do pull the same weight as a spartan, talk about unfair treatment.

Sorry if it's been asked and awnsered already in the thread.

But is the Halo 3: ODST multiplayer dvd compatible with Halo 3 players?

So if i'm playing Team Slayer am I also playing with Halo 3 only owners as well as ODST players?

Most people now seem to be making their way through the first few missions of the game. Enjoy it and take your time. There is plenty more awesome ahead. In fact I think this is the first time a Halo game has been consistently awesome throughout it's campaign, and there are NO dud missions.

Heh. Glad I'm not the only one dumping those stats in a spreadsheet. :lol

That helped me fill in a couple of gaps.

Yeah I find it interesting.:D I'll keep checking the next couple of hours before I head home to play.
The little brats are getting out of school and the big brats are leaving work a little later so I'm interested in how fast the number is going to jump this afternoon and evening.

Yes, the only difference is the 3 new maps.

Does this game have the same installation issues that Halo 3 has/had? I like to keep the games I'm currently playing installed.
No. You can install for improved load times.

One of my fav things, is the wider and pulled back P.O.V.

Finally Bungie!

I hate playing zoomed in, like in Halo 2, 3 or Killzone 2.
Hopefully it stays this way in Reach.

I am highlighting all the spoiler text and you guys are just talking about Hunters, snipers, Brutes, etc.

Is there really anything new about this game besides tweaked gameplay and re-shuffled geometry and encounters?
It's not really anything like Halo 1, 2, or 3, if that counts for anything. Well, single player warthogging still sucks.

Actually it was rather decent, for being a terrible goddamn warthog level. Beat up ass hog getting taken out in a single covie-rocket-launcher-thing-i-forget-the-name-of is maddening though.

Am I understanding correctly that "no matchmaking in Firefight" means that I can't just go into Firefight mode and find 3 random people to play with? Can I only play Firefight with people on my friends list?

If that's true, that seems like a pretty serious limitation. I'm surprised more people aren't complaining about it. Even if it's because of a technical limitation on Microsoft's side (from what I read, this may be the reason), it still sucks.

Firefight not scaling to the number of players also seems kind of lame? Why wouldn't it?

Do I just have my facts wrong? Gears 2 horde mode did both these things.

It requires alot more team work than Horde mode apparently, so guess thats why they did it.

Another contributor to the Halo 1 feel. I've also noticed the weapon sounds have been beefed up considerably. The AR in particular sounds louder and more powerful. Anyone else notice this too?

Sooo, twice today I've had a game of Firefight that could not be played. Game-breaking, stop motion lag, with five or ten seconds between frames. I know I raised this before release, but it was by far my biggest concern, and now it's my biggest disappointment.

It's on Bungie. Firefight has the same limitations that Halo 3 Co-op had, you could only play it with friends not randoms.

Yea, AR sounds fierce, at least compared to multiplayer. Ditto brute shot.

This game is soo much fun on harder difficulties (Legendary Co-Op, Heroic (or Legendary if you're so inclined) solo). The encounters are a ton of fun, and as someone else mentioned, better than Halo 3. I'm going for the Classic Achievement on Uplift Reserve and I'm having all sorts of craziness going on around me. I really want to shoot, but I can't. :lol Just running around trying to hijack a ghost is turning out more fun, rather than tiresome.

Back to playing.

Yeah lack of matchmaking for Firefight is bizarre, especially given the cap on friend lists. Is this gonna be patched in later?

TGS guys will remember me as not being too good at Halo (I recall being told to hide multiple times), but I'm holding my own in Heroic! The
first Hunter Battle was epic. I lured one of them through a building, and when it came out I bombarded it with grenades. I ran in circles around the bus, ducking, hiding, and getting in shots when I could. Eventually I ran up behind it, jumped in the air and brought a melee down finally defeating it. The next one I ran through buildings and killed the grunt on turret. I used that on the Hunter, and played a game of Cat and mouse around the same bus that I killed his friend by. He got caught on a blockade and shot a big blast out, but it bounced and hit him leaving him defeated.
By the end I felt good about myself.

I'm finding that I am playing a lot differently now too. I'm staying back and taking more shots from far away, and using cover whenever I can.

Oh yeah, I also spent two hours in the initial hub world section before the first flashback, just exploring. Looks like I won't be in the "Beat it in 5 hours" camp...

Come on, that's the lamest reason anyone's ever heard. That cannot be their official line.

I think they mentioned that Firefight was built using the campaign portion of the engine, or some such.

So is this game worth getting? So far to me it seems like a glorified expansion pack.

Nah, that's the apologist' tune. I doubt there's any reason beyond putting that much work into it was outside the scope of a simple "expansion" or whatever you want to call it. It's disappointing and if you think there hasn't been enough bitching about it, that's probably because people have just accepted it for the bitch move it is and moved on.

Can you really move around? Everything seems blocked off by those huge red gates.

Is there anyone who has uploaded the different cutscenes from the game? I accidiently skipped the final cutscene of the first flashback mission, and I'm curious to want happended at the end.

So I picked it up today...I am planning on giving the TRU card to a friend so he can pick up the game for $40...does the deal run through saturday or end on saturday?

It'll probably come back up sooner or later once more people get the game.

The Brute Shot is to be FEARED

Sounds are definitely beefier, but maybe that's because I'm playing with a decent pair of headphones, instead of the tv speakers I normally use.

It's based off campaign tech, which means that if one person drops, everyone drops. Imagine that with randoms.

Not really. I'm just weird like that. It was all blocked off yet I still managed to kill 2 hours in it. I went down like every alley...:lol

While I have just picked it up, I didn't notice any difference in the sound. Hm.

Like I said, there probably is a technical reason why they had to do it and what you just described would suck, I agree. That said, the customer shouldn't have to suffer because of their technical limitation. They should have figured out a way around it.

Horde mode came out a year ago. For better or worse, I could find random people to play it with. Even if there's a good reason Bungie couldn't match what Gears did, the reason doesn't matter. It simply should have worked.

And not scaling to the number of players? Why?

I've said my peace on the subject, no more bitching.

Was going to pass on this based on asking price, but the Amazon $51 deal with $10 gift card (+ECA $5 discount) works things around to right below my $40 strike price anyway. Looking forward to digging in.

Reading around the 'net suggests a challenging campaign and nice story presentation populated by interesting and favored va such as from Nathan Fillion (as "Buck", heh) and other Firefly leads.

There's a whole lot about firefight that seems half-implemented. Like it's just meant to provide an idea of what it could be. It's just begging for the crazy customization multiplayer has.

May or may not be placebo effect from using dinky silenced weapons.

Picked up my pre-order during lunch break today @ Best Buy Burbank (with about 10 other rough looking dudes,) and they had no idea what I was talking about when I asked for the pre-order bonus firefight code. They had previously given me an empty dvd case (which I thoght was bizzare, but then a bunch of you said you'd gotten the same,) so am I fucked in terms of getting my Johnson on? Will there be any other way to attain the elusive man?

:/

Still hyped to jump in tonight. Sounds like the best Halo yet.

picked this up today. plan on going through the new multiplayer maps and then digging into the campaign. Some friends and I have already planned a legendary co-op run and firefight mode run :D

Yeah, I definitely noticed it the first time I fired it.

My store still has tons of the the preorder cases for what it's worth. Find one that's shrinkwrapped and get that. I know it's another 5 bucks, but it should have Johnson.

The end of NMPD HQ was fucking amazing. The part where you're in the construction site, defending the crashed pelican from Banshees and Phantoms. Fucking EPIIIIIIIIC

Heading out to Best Buy right now to pick it up, can anyone tell me if the Sgt Johnson code is bundled in the game or was that only handed out at midnight launch?

edit: oh it's a pre-order bonus I guess? shit...
