The Official Halo 3: ODST Thread

My girlfriend's daughter and i completed the Legendary Campaign in about 10 hours, taking the time to kill EVERYTHING that moved. We didn't evade Covenant ground forces, we went on a hunting expedition!

Having someone to share the experience with made it much more enjoyable than it would have been if i had gone in alone (note: we go through one entire Halo (CE, 2 or 3) Campaign almost every second weekend - usually on Legendary).

and, (real spoiler)
1000 rockets in a single rocket launcher made up for the fact that
Buck refuses to fire the rocket launcher when you give it to him :lol

My only gripe was that there were dead Zebras in Campaign. :D

[*]Skulls | These modifiers will cycle on and between each round of Firefight. Gradually more and more stay on, with all seven eventually on for good. The skulls are:

2pytgqr.jpg
| Enemies are much more adept at dodging grenades, vehicles and other projectiles. Enabled out the gates in Firefight.

309htmq.jpg
| Health for all enemies is doubled. Considered the next difficulty after Legendary.

2e4zz4l.jpg
| Shielded enemies are impervious to bullets, and must have their shields stripped with plasma or explosive weaponry.

wqps7d.jpg
| Enemies throw more grenades. Lots and lots and lots of grenades.

sexifl.jpg
| Stamina no longer auto-recharges. The only way to get it back is to melee attack an enemy.

2cxt5hl.jpg
| The ammo left behind in dropped weapons is half the normal level.

70c8sh.jpg
| Extra lives are useless - die once, and it's off to the spectator camera, either until the end of the game or until the start of the next Round.[/LIST]

Quoting this because it's actually, you know, REALLY FUCKING IMPORTANT to be able to identify what skulls or what.

For instance, that diamond with what looks like ricochets glancing off of it? THATS NOT REFLECTIVE SHIELDS. IT NOT BEING ON DOES NOT MEAN YOUR BULLETS ARE DOING SOMETHING.

I was losing my mind trying to keep track of what the fuck was going on about an hour into firefight. I take it that the white horizontal flashes are meant to be invincibility marks, right? The same shit that chieftains deploy, which *has* to be invinciblity or else I am going to lose all faith in whatever ability I thought I had.

White horizontal flashes? ON the enemies themselves? Probably just overshields, from the Engineers.

Game is awesome so far. I'm loving the aesthetic and overall design of the city environments.
And Firefight, gawd, so much fun!!

Nah, there weren't any engineers. OR I DONT THINK THERE WERE. Fuck me. It was just normal.

And yes, on the enemies themselves. Looked *identical* to the chieftain's powerup.

Wow... (audio log spoilers)

When I was playing Data Hive I was thinking 'why the fuck is it frozen in here?' I just listen to log 24 where Kinsler threatens to flood it with Argon.

The campaign was awesome, but it was a lot shorter than I thought it would be. The end pretty much came out of nowhere. We managed to beat it under 3.5 hours.

Haven't tried out firefight yet, or the new maps, but am excited to try them out. Got 2 map packs to catch up on.

Co-op Heroic Campaign complete. GREAT game, and GREAT music. The campaign might even be more fun than Halo 3's. My only complaint is that I wish it was about 3-4 hours longer. I beat it with a friend in about 7 1/2 hours which felt longer than Halo 3, but not long enough.

Only tested the waters of Firefight, and it seems fun so far. Need a full 4 people to see just how good it is.

Played through and finished the game last night, really enjoyed but and I have some questions

What is the crtieria for unlocking the weapons caches? I unlocked two after completing missions, do you have to do something special in a mission to unlock them? I would have thought after the first one unlocked that I was going to get a new one after each mission.

With the engineer killing/not killing achievements, do you have to not kill an engineer running through the entire game to get the second one? I killed a couple through the playthrough.

On the tank mission there is an achievement called both barrels. I take it if you don't take the tank there is rocket ammo lying around to help you with this? Same with the laser achievement on the demolitions guy level?

Thanks

Overall a really great package, only managed a quick twenty minutes trying firefight solo before bed and it looks like it's going to have a lot of legs to it.

Also first time a game has made me laugh out loud for a long time:
"Make sure she has balls"
The shotgun guy who comes with you in the data center is fucking awesome, halo folklore in the making.

i have a question. my amazon order is going to arrive tomorrow and i already bought the game because i couldn't wait any longer. anyway, is it possible to return the amazon order to(let's say best buy) and get full refund?

Laser Blaster:
A banshee kill with the laser will give you two credits for some reason, I assume because it counts the vehicle and pilot as two separate kills. With all the Covenant charging toward you on the bridge, it's not hard to line up a few and get multiple kills with one shot. A laser has five charges, so you can get ten kills - there probably is another one on the map, but I didn't bother to look.

Both Tubes:
For Both Tubes, you get two rockets at the start, and then there's another with four rockets in it behind a barrier on the far right. You should be able to get at least four kills with your two rockets from the Covenant coming out of the garage on the left. Then go to the Scorpion you need to drive, go up the road behind it and there's a health pack and a rocket launcher right behind the silo thing that's there.

Good Samaritan:
As long as you don't directly kill any with the Rookie, you're fine. I don't remember unlocking this at the end of the game - I think you might get it after you drop into Data Hive. The achievement specifies that you can't kill any at night in the city - killing them in flashback levels is fine. It's also fine if they're killed by their bombs because all the Covenant around you are dead or because you got too close, as long as you didn't directly fire at them to kill them.

Weapon caches:
I think it's associated with the audio logs, but I didn't figure out how to find them until I got the third one, so I might be wrong. It makes sense for it to unlock one once you have the choice of four flashbacks to go to, so you can Mongoose around.

I didn't realise there was extra rocket ammo. I spent about fifteen minutes trying to do it with only two rockets :lol (I did it though)

So..
So I think I did kill one out in the city as the rookie, am I screwed for this achievement now? I'm planning on playing through again on Ledgendary so hopefully I can get it then.

Ah that makes sense, how many logs are there? Think I've got about 5 so far.

Are they kind of like HL's Lambda caches? I love finding obscure stashes like those in games.
Yes, actually. They're pretty cool.

Shoot at the unarmored section. I took 'em out without even dying once.:lol

I still can't figure out how (or why, rather) you and others blew through the campaign so fast. I just finished my third flashback, and I've put over three hours into Campaign so far.
I'm probably taking the same amount of time as you. I'm up to the second flashback, and I've clocked in a total of two hours so far.

I'm soloing it on legendary beacuse it just seems to be meant to be played solo. Running around new mombasa while being completely isolated and trying to solve this mystery...it seems like it'd be odd with a bunch of people tagging along. And there's also the fact that it's not that lengthy so I don't want to just blow through it.

I want to go solo but I've got a friend who wants to coop it...trying to see how GAFers feel about it.

Spud, Therms and I just started a Legendary co-op run and I have to say, it is AMAZING. If you turn Meta-scoring on, it basically becomes FireFight w/ infinite lives and an open world to explore at the same fucking time; it's amazing. You can actually get the "double kill, triple kill, etc." medals in Campaign thanks to Meta-scoring. <3 Bungie.

They've really reinvigorated what constitutes as a Halo game to me (for the better) thanks to ODST.

Within a BSP, you and your co-op buddies can free roam wherever and do your own things. Like for example, in one instance, Therms was looking for Audio Logs while Spud was admiring the 'super cute Engineers' that were just roaming around while I was in an arena-type environment dueling Brutes w/Overshield. But eventually we'd come together at the
Weapon Supply Caches
and
drive the Mongoose the SI gaves us around the city just dickin' around.

Good fucking times.

shit. looks like my loan went straight to the office of financial aid instead of being sent to my pocket. now it looks like i def wont be playing ODST for a while. fuuuckk :'(

What does BSP stand for? It was mentioned in the last Vidoc, I didn't get it =[

Loading up Streets from the menu just brings you into an open city if you've completed it IIRC. I seem to remember reading somewhere that the only way to get it again is to start a new game at Prepare to Drop and go all the way through, saving/resuming, so the game recognises it as a cohesive playthrough.

Also, on Deja Vu:
fuck yeah rocket launcher raaaaaaaape

Listening to it more and more... and ODST is now easily my favorite Halo soundtrack of them all. The music for this game is just goddamn masterful.

Ya I really like it.

Did a patch just go up? I got disconnected and it says to update.

nvm it's a system update, no features, just preparing for facebook/twitter

BSP = file extension that uses Binary Space Partitioning "to generate levels that can be rendered quickly while minimizing the number of polygons that need to be redrawn every time the screen refreshes".
Seems that the original bsp algorithm is not fantastic for large open spaces, so go Bungie!

In the immortal words of Justin Timberlake - "I'm lovin' it".

The SMG/Auto Mag combo is such a joy to use. I'm a lot more impressed with the SMG than I thought I'd be, the range and power is solid and the Auto Mag, words can't describe the feeling I get poppin' skulls. It's bad-assery at it's finest.

Dipped my toes in Firefight late last night for the first time. Splitscreen with a friend, it kinda felt like something was missing (2 more players, probably), I need to get the full experience with 4 player I think. I'll definitely be jumping on tonight for some games with you guys. Apologies to the folks sending me game invites. I didn't want to unleash a guest on a gaf lobby.

I just got ODST and played through about thirty minutes and I like the feel for the game but mostly me, my brother and a friend played firefight for about a hour. Pure fun!! If anyone wants to play on Live my GT is: JStudd Send a FR and a invite. I'm down for some action

Just got finished with a solo Firefight session. I actually had to stop because I need to get something to eat, but I made it to about 76,000 last time. I beat my last solo high score by about 38,000 points.

Does this game have Avatar awards? If not... it's the first first-party release since they implemented the system, and the game has been done since May. It should have awards.

Do you think ODST will have long legs in the sales charts so close to the release of MW2?

Meus Renaissance said:

I personally don't like Call of Duty, either WaW or MW, so that won't make me stop playing ODST. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Meus Renaissance said:

Yes. There's more than enough room for both MW2 and ODST. I've never been a big fan of COD, so I won't stop playing ODST.

The automag reminds me of Alyx Vance's pistol from HL2.

JUST LETTIN YOU KNOW

ODST in general gave me a REAL Half Life 2 vibe from start to finish. There was even a section in a flashback with an abandoned rest stop/post that me and a buddy got out to check that immediately brought back memories of Freemon raiding houses.

Haven't played Halo 3, so does it make sense to pick this up story wise? (I'm not exactly a Halo fan, but maybe willing to give the series another chance...)

It has a better story than Halo 3, and ODST has a pretty cool story imo.

Its set at the same time as 2, so for the most part you should be fine.

I think ODST will have legs all the way up until the release of Reach. I'm sure that CoD4 has already left it's mark on the sales of ODST. I know a lot of people I used to play Halo 2/3 with who dropped it completely for CoD4. They're not buying ODST.

However, some might for the Reach beta. Brilliant idea to package it in. And as long as you can buy ODST a week before the beta comes out and still be able to play in it, the game will have legs. Have they said if the Reach beta is limited in anyway in terms of when you buy ODST? I don't think I've heard anything like that.

Everyone has been talking about the campaign and FireFight but I've hardly seen any mention of the new maps. Heretic is great. I'm really happy with what Bungie did. I played Team BRs on it in the Mythic Playlist and it clicked just like it used to be in Halo 2. I was moving around the map with fluidity, predicting spawns and acting on them. *cough* I went 28 and 6 with a Killing frenzy and a Killtacular.

http://www.bungie.net/Stats/GameStatsHalo3.aspx?gameid=1363315108&player=NYSTOFMIND23

Also, Citadel. Wow. I played CTF on it as well as slayer and I had a lot of fun on it. I'm still trying to find where the fuckin sniper spawns but I'll eventually find out. There seems to be a lot of opportunities in the map to be sneaky and get up in places where people won't expect you. I'm looking forward to playing on it some more.

Vidmaster Challenge: Déjà Vu

Complete Highway on 4-player Legendary LIVE co-op, with Iron, and no 'Hog or Scorpion.

Does anyone have this achievement or the requirements? If so, could we please together because I'd like to unlock it

By the way, what does this Skull mean with the 500 figure over it?

The 500k means your highest Firefight score was above 500k (but below whatever the next threshold is).

Simple to the point verdict:

Halo 3: ODST is actually better than Halo 3.

Better crafted experience.

Thank you Bungie for giving us a game that finally was awesome like the like the old Halo 2 E3 2003 Trailer

My thoughts exactly.

Anyway, when are they going to address the online issues?
