The Official Halo 3: ODST Thread

Any chance we might see a patch for public co-op and firefight?
The game has been done and in the can for over four months, and based on tech Bungie has already used in Halo 3. I'm guessing they know of the issues, and they would have addressed them before release if they could. Hopefully they at least comment one way or the other.

Checking the b.net stats, Halo 3 hit a milestone just now: Players (All Time): 15,000,231

Over 50k new Halo 3 players since ODST released.

Ya I'm sure a lot of people who got the Xbox 360 late and passed on Halo 3 got ODST instead.

Interestingly, today (day 3) ODST hasn't really grown in unique users. I think by the end of the first day it was around 800,000+ and at the end of the second day it was already around the 1.2M mark, and hasn't really changed since then. This game might be very heavily front-loaded.

Why not? They could set an arbitrary limit to recent film saving, 20 films or 50MB or 2 weeks old, or whatever before it starts deleting the oldest ones to make room for the new ones. Replay data doesn't take up very much space anyways.

I always figured it was handled in this type of fashion, until today.
Then it would become another form of "screw you, Bungie/M$; give me moar space!" from the people who would forget to pull out the files they wanted to actually save, similar to the custom content gripe that goes on to this day.

There's no telling why they changed the feature from the beta to the way it is currently (unless someone in the know can point it out), but as it stands I'm willing to give Bungie the benefit of the doubt that it was for a good reason. Personally I wish it was like the beta apparently was, because drunk Halo loses something when you forget to save the film. :-(

Got stuck on my Chopper on Lost Platoon by a Grunt last night in FF. He retorted:

"Bet you I CAN stick it!!!"

It made me lolololol and then I died a little inside.

A friend of mine said he's heard one sing "we are the champions" after killing him! :lol :lol

Anyone want to play Firefight right now? I invited some people from GAF Firefight 3 but they are playing campaign. I haven't played Firefight at all yet and it sounds fun.

You can just play Mombasa Streets to get the 29/30 logs, then go into
Data Hive
for the 30th.

So if I go back and play through Mombasa Streets just before
Data Hive
I should be fine? I'd rather not play through the whole thing again until I do my Legendary run and then I just want to focus on gameplay.

I have to wait until 12am to get on, here's my peak time (now and for another 3 hours or so) speed;

:lol

Thankfully, it's not that bad later on when I usually play.

I assume at least a third of those are new accounts via one months etc, there are a ton of ppl that have like 5-10 accounts they play on. They love owning noobs over and over while messing up matchmaking in the process.

If it's your 1st playthrough I would play through to the end and complete the game first... then head back to the streets then to the Data Hive.

Just to nerd out with some halo lore:

Has Bungie explained why there aren't any Elites in ODST? The game takes place during Halo 2's time line, immediately after Master Chief leaves Earth. In Halo 2, we fought a ton of elites on the ground and during this time, the covenant has yet to split.

IIRC the Prophet's troops left with him. Then a Brute invasion force landed shortly after the slipspace.

If you were paying close attention, during the first flashback,
Buck takes notice of all the dead Elites on the ground
. It's obvious
some Elites were killed by Brutes right before Regret made his slipspace jump.

Heh, maybe we should start dividing up Firefight invitations by location. i.e. "Looking for Firefighters in the Midwest."

Edit: I've got a 20mb/20mb 7ms connection to Chicago.

"Sweet Clyde, laugh derisively at their internet connections!"

AWESOME Futurama quote!

Yeah, I've already completed the game so I guess I can just go back to a point when everything is completely open to me.

Ordered the ODST soundtrack from Amazon today. Since it released the same day as the game I was hoping best buy would have it, but no luck. Now I am kicking myself for not ordering it right away, o well.

Just noticed there's a new medal in Firefight: Sticky Spree. As there is a medal above that for every other kind of spree, I decided to get 10 stickies in a row, just to do it. Triumph! There is a medal for 10 stickies, and it's called "Sticky Fingers".

You will not regret it! I bought it from Sumthing Digital and even though it was one of the dumbest services I ever bought music from and I had to sort it out afterwards since it was all messed up, all of that was totally worth it. Its simply enthralling.

So, question: What order did people do the missions in? I inadvertantly skipped one when I found the door to the
Police Station that I'm meant to blow up with Dutch
locked - was it meant to be, incidentally? - so I went to another one and jumped some ways in the story. It actually annoyed me a bit, I have to say - I wish that I had played it wholly chronologically.

I wanna play ODST so bad. D: Some of my friends are making fun of me for not having finished it yet when I'm "such a Halo nerd." Stupid work. :(

There seem to be a bunch of new medals. Did a medal exist for an EMP kill before? That was new to me too.

All the missions forward after the first one, for which you are boxed in the tutorial are meant to be entirely free form. Personally I enjoyed having to piece them together though.

If anyone is up for some firefight or some coop. add me plz. i'll be playing all night.

Got no mic though. Girlfriend is sleeping.

Oh yeah, so I finished
Data Hive
on Legendary [solo! i'm so proud of myself. fuck brute shots] and I have 27/30 audio logs.

But, if I go to the level select and choose New Mombasa Streets, will I have to search for them all again? because I know choosing a new level erases whatever progress you made in the hub.

Less than 50 miles away:

That's actually the best I've ever seen it.

Yeah, lots more medals. I especially like the assist one, lets me know on the fly when my kills are being stolen :lol

Was wondering for a while what Dream Crusher was for; apparently it's 10 consecutive hammer kills.

Audio logs you have already got won't appear the second time, and the number carries over.

No, you save all of the VISR data, it's just level progress and level-based achievement progress(like "Dark Times" and stuff like that) that gets erased. You can go back to Mombasa Streets to get the final 2 logs in it if you just select it from the menu.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned and that I've been really impressed by is how smooth pulling up the map is. A lot of games take a second or so to load objective or map screens, but in ODST it's totally instant. You see enemies moving around in real time and everything.

Is it possible to jack one of those covenant tanks? I can kill the gunner. But, everytime I hop on one I can only throw in a grenade to kill it, not take it over.

So I'm guessing if you finish the campaign with a few audio files missing, there's aren't any good hints as to what areas the remaining are located in? You'd have to travel all over the entire city scrummaging in obscure areas? Just stinks that the Mongoose would be counterproductive for finding audio files.

I have played a few hours but haven't figured this out:

Can you join a Firefight game in progress? If not, will they ever fix that?

And will they ever fix the 'host leaves, ends game' thing? That's ridiculous.

Let's do Deja Vu later, mang :3

Alright, I'll try to get Naughty Naughty, some more logs, and try for Vidmaster Challenge: Classic. I'm currently installing ODST to my hard drive. I'm tempted to try to get the skulls, but I must have the last achievement be a Vidmaster.

I know its been asked, but I haven't seen an answer yet in the thread:

To get the achievement for beating the game on Legendary, do you have to do everything including the hub or can you just go to mission select and choose individual missions and beat them on Legendary?

Does anyone else feel that the Warthog is a bit faster in ODST than it is in Halo 3?
I'm sure this is due to the increased FOV. I get the same speedy sensation while lugging around turrets too.

All the vehicles handle a lot nicer than they do in Halo 3.
ODST version of the
Banshee
is the best yet. I hated how it got completely nerfed for Halo 2.

It was de-nerfed in Halo 3, that is when it could shoot green plasma again.
