The Official Halo 3: ODST Thread

Is the messy eye-shadow actually on Dare's in-game model?

OT: Just played up to and finished Assault on The Control Room. Pretty damn good aside from the incessant reusage of a few spots. Classic Needler/Pistol/Plasma Rifle nostalgia!

The BR's no longer needed with the pistol, and the game plays much better because of it (probably one of the reasons this game is being compared to Halo 1 so much - many considering ODST being the best Halo campaign since Halo 1). The game feels like a more advanced version of Halo 1. I'm personally abandoning the silenced SMG every time I find an AR, and I've seen others say something similar.

Bungie's not going to be taking the AR out, unless it doesn't fit with the gameplay of Reach.

I'm so glad that no one who designs the Halo games thinks like you do. If the Auto Mag replaced the BR, then we wouldn't get an SMG in ODST. You throw that Auto Mag in Halo 3 Multiplayer and it's shit with out being dual wielded. Just like the Halo 2 Magnum. Do you take down brutes with just the Auto Mag? No, you drop their shields with the SMG and finish them off with the Magnum.

The Battle Rifle is the reincarnation of the Halo 1 pistol. The scope, the rate of fire and its effectiveness in all situations against any weapons. You always have a chance with a BR.

edit: Ok, this thread moved fast while I was typing. If we're talking strictly campaign here, then you can get rid of the BR and have your AR and pistol love fest. That doesn't matter. People will use whatever guns for campaign. Shit, I even used the needler in campaign. However, multiplayer is another story and a more important one too. The Auto Mag as it is cannot replace the BR in multiplayer.

I'm starting to get worried about Reach's multiplayer. I hope it doesn't change too much.

I played Halo 3 on Heroic solo and it wasn't that hard even though there were some points where I thought I would never pass

should stick with the same difficulty in ODST as I have heard it is much more challenging?

just got the game, wouldn't mind trying out some firefight (good job on the no matchmaking, bungie), just don't expect me to be very good.

If you join the GAF Firefight 3 tag, you'll get a lot of random invites.

ODST is a ton more challenging if you try to play it like Halo 3. On the other hand, if you play it in a more tactical manner, and work with your teammates (if you're playing co-op), the difficulty is about the same. You just have to approach battles differently.

i don't even know what that is. To be honest i don't really play online at all, I just got a free month of Gold thanks to the dvd drive on my Elite going to shit and having to be repaired to i figured i'd try out the multiplay on ODST (single player is great so far btw)

How do I go about joining this GAF tag?

quick question: I'm about to get the last (i think) flashback item. If I start that level and beat it, will the game end, or can I still search the city for more audio logs?

Xbox LIVE has a "view friends of friends" feature. GAF Firefight 3 is a gamertag (the 3rd one, as indicated by the name, 1 & 2 are full already) created exclusively to make friends with NeoGAF people who need people to play ODST with. Once you get your invite accepted, you can open up your Guide, go to Friends, pick GAF Firefight 3, go to View Friends, and then send out game invites to people you see online playing ODST.

This is getting out of hand. There's no real reason as to why 3 separate gamertags should exist. There are random lurkers getting added to the gamertags. I don't know if it's worth the trouble of doing anything now but we should have had a requirement like putting your GAF tag in your XBL profile at the very least. It's just ridiculous that there are three now. :lol

Last flashback item starts the last flashback mission and play resumes in the city afterward. That doesn't mean the game is over though.

I think there is a new beacon after the last one on that initial list, which takes you out of the hub yet again. However, audio logs are saved even if you restart a new campaign. I found 7 on my Normal playthrough, and I'm up to 11 now on Heroic. It kept my audio logs from my Normal playthrough.

Solo and co-op audio logs are kept separately though.

The game will end and you can choose Mombassa Streets from the level select, walking around finding the rest.

Is it hard to believe that there are >200 people on GAF playing ODST?

If you do this, make sure you've finished your current campaign run first. Any time you do level select instead of resume game it overwrites your current campaign save.

Audio logs are always kept though.

No, it's not that. (Then again...) Actually, I've had a couple of GAFers tell me that people they got in contact with from one of the GTs weren't even GAFers. For example, one dude on there is a random person from Gamespot's forums that lurks the thread.

The GTs should be for GAFers. Why would I want to play with some random douche who can't aim a rocket launcher at an enemy standing still? (That happened!)

I'd like thank Rev09 and the other fellow Gaffers, sorry can't remember your names, for the achievements.

I have to come to realize that I'm pretty horrible at Firefight too. I accidently tagged one our teammates with a plasma grenade :(

oh, ok cool. Thanks. Kind of shitty to have to make a workaround like that but at least its something.

I don't see how that matters. I think of it like matchmaking. I generally add everyone if I find a team that doesn't lag and can actually play the game. For you, maybe you can choose only to add friends if they played to your standards.

Unless you're in a rush with a rental to kill off the inclusive difficulty achievements, Normal will still give some challenge as you adjust to the Rookie's vulnerability compared to a Spartan. Then enjoy Heroic.

Kind of off-topic, but does anyone know how to get your Bnet service record to use your correct timezone? All my games are timestamped 3 hours early cause I'm EST.

I can't find a timezone setting in profile, and my location settings are correct (City, State, Zip), but it still displays all timestamps as PST. It's driving me nuts!

Back on topic, just got Classic in a 30 minute run. 3 more to go, including Annual.

That makes me think, a few of the Halo 3 maps would be fun in Firefight. Sandtrap or Valhalla maybe.

You'd think because of the Firefight maps being campaign levels, that there would've been enough room on the disc for CGI cutscenes. If they can't fix the clay faces in-game, they could've at least made the opening cutscene not look ridiculous.

I'm not really bothered - the larger the pool of people to play with, the better. It is a poor man's substitute for matchmaking right now.

What does this have to do with my post? :lol

It made me think of Halo 3. The multiplayer maps weren't just campaign levels reused, and the campaign was a bit longer, so they might not have had space for better cutscenes. ODST should have more space for cutscenes, and therefore they should've put at least one really nice CGI one in there. It's kind of pathetic that Halo Wars had way better cutscenes than any FPS Halo game.

I can do Annual tomorrow if you want.

Honestly, I like the in-engine cut-scenes. Obviously they aren't the best of quality, but I'd prefer in-engine rather than jumping from the level you're actually playing to a cg cut-scene that looks completely different. I feel cg works better for Halo Wars, though, because it's a zoomed-out RTS and the cut-scenes would look stupid in-engine.

I guess. Halo in-game cutscenes bother me because they look so ugly. Even the ugly mugs in Gears of War look way better than the faces in Halo 3 or ODST. Actually, Half-Life 2 has better faces and it's a 4 year old game.

yup you need to keep the disc. the beta will drop in the spring (i think) and it will be where it says new intel right now in the main menu on the odst disc

I never played on Connect, and if I did, it sure wouldn't have been 2v2 BG. I take the throwback name to be more towards the rule sets anyways.

Drop Valhalla & Standoff, and add Slayer into the mix and maybe some KOTH, and you have a great playlist.
Personally, I think Standoff is OK where it is.

Valhalla is clearly too large for 4v4 in Throwback, and Team Slayer. The only 4v4 playlist it is fine for is Team Snipers. That said, has Shishka made any modifications to these maps? Any boxes added to increase shortcuts in The Pit? Any changes to Last Resort? Standoff? I've yet to play it, but I did clean slate the playlist details on Bungie.net. Only thing I'm bummed about is little variety among the maps and gametypes. They should add Assault and KotH, and also add Boundless, Narrows, Sandbox creations and Assembly.

No story spoilers but some comments in regards to the hub. I used spoiler tags to keep it clean.

So there are areas of the map that are still inaccessible after you finish the game. Anyone have an idea as to why? They seemed mapped out like any other area so I wonder if they're accessible in some way? Maybe it has something to do with the weird glow in the dark marks that appear often? And what's the deal with the blue and red target posters pasted everywhere in New Mombasa?

Good choice. I beat it on Normal and thought it was a tad too easy. I'm 2/3 done Heroic now and it is quite challenging and I'm enjoying it a lot more.
