The Official Halo 3: ODST Thread

No story spoilers but some comments in regards to the hub. I used spoiler tags to keep it clean.

So there are areas of the map that are still inaccessible after you finish the game. Anyone have an idea as to why? They seemed mapped out like any other area so I wonder if they're accessible in some way? Maybe it has something to do with the weird glow in the dark marks that appear often? And what's the deal with the blue and red target posters pasted everywhere in New Mombasa?

I'm pretty sure that's just to give the impression there's more to the city, that you're in one portion of it.

Headed on now if anyone wants to play firefight/co-op.

I was reading the IGN review, can you only play firefight with friends?

Well there's no matchmaking, but people don't have to be on your friend list for you to play firefight with them. Friend of a friend, for example.

great games today guys...managed to unlock the Recon helmet. It doesn't look so cool now that i have it. :lol

I've never thought the recon helmet was particularly good looking. Aside from people wanting something they can't have, I've never seen what the big deal is.

No, it's not that. (Then again...) Actually, I've had a couple of GAFers tell me that people they got in contact with from one of the GTs weren't even GAFers. For example, one dude on there is a random person from Gamespot's forums that lurks the thread.

The GTs should be for GAFers. Why would I want to play with some random douche who can't aim a rocket launcher at an enemy standing still? (That happened!)

The problem is that there's no ODST Firefight thread in Online. Ideally, someone should have started the new account and then THEY sent out the invites from the list in that thread. That way there's no lurkers or anything. They would accept no friend requests, only confirmations from the requests THEY send out.

With the website integration for friends it would take all of a half hour I bet.

As of now, it's kind of a backwards method.

I've always liked Recon. If it was always available I'd be using it anyway, and once I unlock it I'll be using it regardless of how many others end up using it :D

There's nothing wrong with it per se. I've just always been partial to the EVA and Security helmets. Big visors FTW!

another audio log question: Is there any in-game hint system to find the ones I'm missing (besides the super giving you proximity hints)? I'm at 22 and want to find the rest before I head for the final sequence.

Good choice. I beat it on Normal and thought it was a tad too easy. I'm 2/3 done Heroic now and it is quite challenging and I'm enjoying it a lot more.

As always, Heroic is definitely a nice upgrade. I always enjoy contrasting my experiences with how the same fights play out on the various difficulties. Good thing with ODST is that even on Normal you can't quite wade in to an enemy infestation without taking some worrisome hits, more so with the Rookie roaming the streets late game.

Final note, I'll just add my approval to everyone else's regarding the soundtrack. Great stuff.

Wish you could make film clips from campaign. My friend and I did Oni Alpha Site on Easy, and instead of blowing up the bridge, we charged straight into the Covenant on the other side.:lol It was pretty epic, and it's epic to watch, too. Afterward, my friend stayed on the other side of the bridge while I blew it just for shits and giggles.

Easy is easy.

I found this quite interesting. Originally popped up on the HBO forums and spread over to /v/, searched and couldn't find anything here.

The Inferno, as I recall it (having read it about 2 years ago after enjoying 'La Vida Nuova'), begins with Dante wandering lost and alone, in a 'dark wood'. It is night when you awaken in New Mombasa. The city towers above you not like a frightening wood.

The first helpful hand you encounter is that of Vergil, who guides you to supposed safety--Vergil, the Superintendent of New Mombasa, who shares the name of the Roman poet who wrote the Aeneid (about the Hero who survived the Trojan massacre (perhaps an allusion to Buck and Reach?)). Vergil guides the Rookie, like Dante, through 9 levels; the 9 circles of Hell.

New Mombasa burns, like the common image of hell. It is dark, dangerous, horrifying. And Vergil guides you gently, offering help with cryptic statements (in game, it is composed of the Bumble-bee-esque conglomeration of audio bytes).

Later, as you encounter the final lost squad mate, you descend to the 9th level of the city substructure where it is frozen; that is to say, not unlike Satan's frosty chamber. For what seems to be little to nor reason (as far as I could tell).

Food for thought. ;)

With Oni Alpha Site I like how Mickey says "I have to do everything myself" (
regarding bombs
) if you cross the bridge and decide to lay waste with the Spartan laser before moving on.

Need 2 people to do Endure on Firefight. On the Alpha Site mission. We're in the lobby right now

HBO

I like the comparison but
the Data Hive is actually frozen for a reason
. Not that it's really relevant.

need some people to play firefight with. my 6 year old can't cut the mustard.

GT: steve o 3000

Go ahead and send me an invite anytime you see me online. I'm always down for some firefight.

Played through
NMPDHQ, Kikowani Station, and Data Hive.
the first two were plain awesome. The third might not be as much fun upon replay, but the excitement from going
straight underground to finally find out what's going on with the Super and ONI
was unbeatable. Can't wait to do more playthrough of them
other than the Scarab fight. That was damn hard for me. Also reminds me of a funny moment: after making a round with my Banshee, I need a fresh one. I drop out from about 15 feet and land on an outcropping of one of the dock things. As I jump across the gap to a brand new ride, I get smacked in the head by my old banshee and go down to low health. I'm somehow standing on the side of the dock, slowly slipping. Eventually, Gunny went and drowned. Similarly: I was making good progress, and I had cleared out everyone except the Scarab, or so I thought. As I float back to regain stamina, I get hit by a fully charged PP from the one grunt left, and I fall with my Banshee down to the depths.

No way, man. I was referring to another instance.

Yea I've gotten a few pretty bad kids off that list but I've also had a lot more awesome games meeting some new people I never would have. I imagine in a few weeks though the real GAF Firefight (GAF Firefight 2 :D )will be able to handle all the real players who are still going to play. This is like initial hype stage of the game.

I played Halo 3 on Heroic solo and it wasn't that hard even though there were some points where I thought I would never pass

should stick with the same difficulty in ODST as I have heard it is much more challenging?

Yeah it's much more challenging especially doing it Solo,it's not frustrating but big battles take a while as a lot of moving to and from cover is needed, the grunts are vicious little bastards in ODST and obviously an ODST not being as strong as MC means that getting up close and personal with the larger enemies means you'll come off worse as even the grunts need at least two butts to the face before they fall down.

But when you do win the tough battles against the convenant ,it feels good.

just got endure after a 2 hour run.

not as hard with 4 people playing with a plan and saving up lives for the last set.......atleast not as hard as deja vu. still dont have that shit

That's pretty awesome stuff, Wu. I haven't posted much in regards to ODST and how I feel about it, but it's a great game and I think the team at Bungie did an amazing job for 14 months worth of development time. Because I love it, there are things that I don't like about the game (I've been nitpicking on my own but more on those later) but it really doesn't take away from the experience I had my first time through as the Rookie.

I've said what a fantastic piece of software ODST is on Twitter to some of the Bungie dudes but I thought it would be nice to post it here for the others that surely lurk. It is an amazing game that really surprised me when my expectations were set to 'very low'. It has left me wanting more from Bungie and more Halo. A year ago I simply was barely interested in spending more time in the Halo universe and now I'm dying to know more about Reach.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how Bungie improves the presentation, user interface in-game and menus, visual design, AI, 3D character and environment modeling, gameplay mechanics, modes (How will Firefight work with Spartans if it comes back, I wonder!), sound design and music (More new style music Marty, please! And I love hearing the characters chatter in-game; they're much more interesting that way.), and animation further than ODST already did.

Oh, and I got Recon a couple nights ago but haven't played it. I expect to run into trash talking kids in MM eventually. :)

Is it possible to shoot down a Phantom in Firefight?

How many points, roughly, does it get you?

No.

Come on now, if it was we would just shoot down the 5th wave phantoms every single time.

I'm really concerned that Firefight won't last because of the lack of matchmaking, but more importantly, because of the game breaking lag. It's a huge hassle to even find a game, and when you do, there's a chance it won't work, which is such a kick in the pants.

Edit* Is Xbox Live down? I just got disconnected and can't reconnect.

Edit* nevermind, someone tripped on my ethernet cable and pulled it out.
