The Official Halo 3: ODST Thread

Was playing FireFight on Lost Platoon and one of the drop ships just stopped and didn't drop off anyone. For about 10-15 minutes we tried to shoot it down, and it just stood there. Then randomly it dropped the guys and the game continued.

Anyone else had that happen?

Nope. Sounds like a really annoying bug. It would've been rough if you guys used all the ammo available on the Phantom before it started to drop guys again :lol

Is there any information yet about when the Reach beta will become available?

Most probable time is Spring 2010 like the Halo 3 beta, considering it's scheduled for Fall 2010 release.

Had to smile at the last one.

Any customs going on tonight? I haven't really given any time to the new maps yet.

Asked that question earlier, no one responded to it or I missed a response.

Either way, it doesn't seem any customs are going on.

What does it mean?

Something for fans of the books. Halsey was instrumental in the development of the SPARTAN II program, and...

spoilers from the books:

Did escape from Reach, and is currently stuck in a Forerunner shield world.

There isn't much more enemy variety they could've done. All the enemies in the game are in the 5 waves.
Right, that's my point: they could be paced better through the rounds, especially vehicles. Gradually increase the predominance of Hunters and camo Brutes, for instance. Add Wraiths to the later rounds, rather than right from the start. Just pace it a bit more. As it is, after one Round I feel like I've played almost all Firefight has to offer - I've faced everything there is to face on the map. I'm already burned out on solo Firefight for that reason.

But I'm just grouchy today. Firefight is a lot of fun. But there's so much more that could be done with the concept, and what's in ODST is pretty stripped down. So I'm hoping to see it more fleshed out in Reach.

AHHH, FINDING LAST LOG MAKING ME CRAZY

Data Hive mission when the SI says "crime scene; restricted access", the NMP dude will go up to it and force his way in. Follow him and at the left side of the end of the room, you'll see the Log on the wall. Then you can laugh at what happens next.

And just yesterday and today I experienced the "2 frames a second; game-breaking lag" that everyone was talking about. It seems this game just randomly assigns two peoples' connections to be at war with each other even if they both have an open NAT.

It really is ridiculous how they decided to handle campaign/FireFight netcode and Matchmaking netcode seperately. I just had to laugh when urk came in yesterday saying "what issues do you want us to address?" Joke post? Maybe the issue that's been apparent since Halo 3's launch and for some stupid fucking reason has been copy-pasted into ODST? Every Halo/Bungie forum and their mothers have a ton of complaints about the horrible way the Campaign co-op/FireFight netcode handles host selection and latency.

This needs to be patched. There are no excuses. I don't care if Reach comes out next week.

Man I'm glad they allow you to go back on the Mombasa Streets after beating the game.

It's so fun just running around the city at night and having a bunch of small battles. Plus I still have 7 more audio files left to find!

Finished the game the other night. Great fun, not as good as HALO 3 obviously, but worth my time and money. Loved the hub world.

If I have one gripe about the entire thing - and forgive me from not checking through this humungous thread for an answer to prove me wrong; its that we finally had another opportunity to fight against Elites given the timeline, yet they weren't included in the enemy lineup. Don't get me wrong, I fear the hammer brute as an ODST - he makes me run my ass off, but nothing has ever instilled as much fear in me from these games as much as the invisible/gold elite with a sword. Are we to believe that as soon as Reach's ship jumped after the Elites were still campaigning against the humans in New Mombasa that they were all suddenly wiped out by the Brutes? The Brutes' campaign and the civil war hadn't started THAT quickly. We could have had a few opening levels against Elites. :(

Yep. People who can play completely lag free in one group will have game-breaking lag in another group. Testing things by having every player take a turn out to see where the conflict lies, it always ends up being 2 people who can play fine normally that for some reason are having a conflict. We don't know enough yet from anecdotal reports to know if the conflict is caused by geographical location, ISP, router, or other cause. We do know that it happens even if both people have open NAT.

I really hope Bungie is trying to recreate the problem and figure out what's going on.

It's because they never programmed Elite enemy AI, and given the time and budget for making ODST they couldn't fit it in.

Reach will certainly have Elites again, because it both makes sense to the lore and because everyone knows that Elites are way more fun to fight against.

In Halo CE, Elites felt like fighting my equal when they took cover to recharge shields. Brutes just charge at you when you drop their shields, which is sometimes dangerous and can set you into a panic, but a combination of both would make combat much more exciting.

One thing I sort of wish they'd have done was have a few stragglers in the city at night that you can randomly find either holed up in cover fighting off the covenant or wandering around as the Rookie is. They don't even have to be ODST...just random soldiers or police. I mean it's just a little strange that the Rookie is the ONLY human in the hub.

I'd take one for a ride on the mongoose and cause some havoc :lol

Ya that'd be nice. There are a lot of things they could've done better with ODST, but the game is still pretty good. Let's hope they learn from this for Reach.

Would have liked a multiplayer deathmatch mode in the city HUB. I mean the entire city HUB.

Go around in packs of 3 or 4. Don't even get me started on how great/heart-pounding Zombies could be.

So...what's the best level to attempt the Vidmaster: Classic achievement?

Seems like all of them are damn near impossible.

Uplift Reserve. Grab the 'hog at the beginning of the level and drive past everything (make sure you don't have a gunner, otherwise when he shoots it'll count for you too) until you come across the Ghost that's just sitting there before you go inside a structure. After that, just continue to boost past everything.

At least that sounds feasible :lol

I'll give it a shot.

Yeah, it's not too bad. It only gets hard in the final part where there's
a Wraith, two Brutes on turrets, and a Brute Pack/Chieftain with a Fuel Rod gunning for you
.

It's really easy as long as you just gun straight through.

It's nice to not have to deal with those Cortana/Gravemind messages like in Halo 3...

...but that low health beep is at least as bad! I'm playing through on Legendary and it's driving me crazy, I'm constantly backtracking to find a healthpack and make it stop. Seriously, how did that get through playtesting?? Halo 1 had basically the same health system and I didn't need to hear that godawful noise every time I lost some health.

Besides that really grating issue, though, I am very much enjoying my playthrough, definitely liking this more than Halo 3 so far.

Just played a few HALO 3 MP games from the ODST CD. Same ol' maps like guardian and other boring ones. Any tips on how to get playing on the three new maps included on the disc?
