The Official Halo 3: ODST Thread

Any tips on how to get playing on the three new maps included on the disc?
The Team Mythic would be your best bet seeing that it is only the mythic maps and some community made Sandbox maps.

Uplift Reserve. Grab the 'hog at the beginning of the level and drive past everything (make sure you don't have a gunner, otherwise when he shoots it'll count for you too) until you come across the Ghost that's just sitting there before you go inside a structure. After that, just continue to boost past everything.
A gunner's kills WILL NOT count against you. I ran this with a gunner and a passenger with a Spartan laser and got the achievement. Just don't honk your horn, because that DOES count as firing a weapon.

I actually got Wraith Killer and Classic on the same runthrough :P

It's nice to not have to deal with those Cortana/Gravemind messages like in Halo 3...

...but that low health beep is at least as bad! I'm playing through on Legendary and it's driving me crazy, I'm constantly backtracking to find a healthpack and make it stop. Seriously, how did that get through playtesting?? Halo 1 had basically the same health system and I didn't need to hear that godawful noise every time I lost some health.

Besides that really grating issue, though, I am very much enjoying my playthrough, definitely liking this more than Halo 3 so far.
Indeed. Bungie's UI is generally the best I've seen, so it's especially jarring. And even if you take just a little bit of heath damage, it beeps. I'm a Legendary + Mythic skull run, and it's beeping most of the time.

Another nuisance is the degree of visual distortion when you take damage. It's annoying, but especially bad when Black Eye is on in Firefight. The screen is red, blurry and distorted and I find myself trying to melee someone just to get rid of that, never mind my health.

Two very perplexing UI decisions there.

Yea its ODST weekend I'd assume no go on customs anyways.

Have fuel rod cannon shots always bounced like brute shots?

Since Halo 3 I believe. They ignite a second after firing though. And brute shots don't bounce anymore I think.

Did a 520K and 450K game today. I'm done for today. Never expected to get anywhere CLOSE to those numbers, let alone achievements :lol

Got to Set 4, Round 3, Wave 5 on Chasm Ten today before lag made the game unplayable and we lost, sadly. But then we got Deja Vu, which was hilarious, with the thousand-round rocket launchers and mongeese. Honestly, that was the most fun I've had in a long time (especially just sitting and firing rockets nonstop the whole time at the end of the level).

Presumably the logic there is that a normal human feels the effects of a hit more than master chief. I don't mind the red hue much since it's a decent visual indicator that you're hurt (and indeed how hurt you are). Similarly, the beeping thing, I mean I can glance up to look at my health bar but that can be a lethal act in a lot of circumstances.

I guess it can help, but the red hue is already telling you what the beeping continues to do. If the beeping is a cue that you're close to death, then just beep it a few times. I never understood why some games(especially Zelda) have it constantly beep to drill it in your head. And for the hue, I think they should have, atleast, disabled it staying like that in firefight when they put skulls on...it's pretty obvious that gets annoying after awhile.

Finished the campaign story today with a friend on co-op. we blasted through it on normal but fully plan to revisit it on Heroic as we old tell some of the setpieces would be made much more awesome by the added difficulty.

ODST contains some of my favorite Halo campaign levels from all the games. they’re shorter and less repetitive than Halo:CE. they’re epic and huge like Halo 3 and there’s no bum mission like Cortana to bring down the experience.

really tight, focussed game that I quite enjoyed.

As for the characters and story, the ODSTs were fine but the little love story between Nathan Fillion and Number 6 was pretty awful. It didn’t feel natal. bit of a shame but I feel Halo’s storytelling peaked in CE, so… yeah.

Anyway, I think I’ll go back and explore the rest of the night streets on my own and play back the main missions on co-op on harder difficulties. great fun.

I'm starting a new game on legendary, and I have a question. I notice that most of the city is locked out once again. I'm pretty sure that the number of audio logs you have are related to the number of weapon caches open. Tell me I don't have to go hunting for those damn things again.

You don't. They carry over.

Beat it! :D

This is the best Halo campaign I've ever played. Better than Halo 1! BETTER! This has everything I've ever wanted from a Halo campaign following Halo 1. Great atmosphere. Great sandbox qualities. Great music. Great and logical designs all around. Great use of the written lore that was always left out of the main games.
(There's a mention of Dr. Halsey! Cool stuff!)
Just great stuff all around. To me, ODST feels so much more like a Halo game than Halo 2 and 3. As I played through ODST, I always felt this sense of Haloness; a really good vibration I got when I played through H1. I never felt that when I played through H2 and 3.

About the ending:
Does Halo 3 really take place one month AFTER Halo 2? Seems like a pretty wide gap to me.

I really hope the campaign in Halo: Reach follows the same kind of design philosophy as ODST. Everything about ODST seems to focus and refine upon what made Halo 1 a great game. It'll be a damn shame if the campaign is strictly linear and uninteresting like Halo 2 and 3.

Yea I know, that seemed weird.
When you first get back to the surface I thought that was supposed to be Truth's fleet and they were going for Halo 3 happening right fucking then. That would have been fucking cool. Instead they went for the "MC hanging out with Truth for months on end" stupidity. What, that suit has a cheeseburger maker inside of it too? And where the fuck did all those covenant come from anyway? Regret had a secret backup fleet nobody noticed? One that mysteriously got Truth's order to kill all the elites from fifty bazillion miles away?

I really think Bungie needs to do mocap. The cut scene just looks alittle strange.
I unno, I kinda like the puppet people now. It's got a strange charm to it. I wanna replay Halo 3 and see if I like Keyes or Truth's terribleness now.

I think I'm about 10 minutes from finishing my first heroic playthrough. Where was the e3 drop sequence?? I want to watch that part on my tv...

Ghaleon (or anyone else), do you have any good tips for legendary mode? I'm at the start of Tayaki Plaza and I cannot get close to the brutes because even if the brute misses with his brute shot, if I'm caught inside the blast radius, my entire stamina goes out the window and from there only 1-2 subsequent shots follow and I'm dead. I always thought Legendary mode did too much damage in Halo 3, forcing me to stay back and shoot, but this is ridiculous. I feel that I can't get any hits on me at all because then I'll have to scurry for a health pack. I'm sure that if I really push through, I'll get past this and the game eventually, but if there isn't some trick I'm missing and I have to play through the game like this, then I'm not sure I want to play legendary, atleast not without a co-op buddy backing me up.

Legendary is all about having the right tools for the job. If you're up against a pack of brutes and don't have plasma combos and plenty of cover, you need to back off. If you need a partner, GT: Drbo

It's at the start of Bucks first mission, so all I got on me right now is an AR and pistol...though I could grab a grunts' PP. Thanks for the tip :D

And, unfortunately, I can't co-op. Sorry if I made that sound like a request, but I have no Live at the moment, and it doesn't look like I'll have it in the near future either. I appreciate the offer though.

Nearly done with my second play through on Heroic. This is one of the top 5 FPS games ever made and it nearly claws its way to the top at number one. The design in this is almost flawless.

What would you say your top five were? :D

Finally got the Audiophile Achievement, without any guides too! If I hadn't heard from this thread that the last audio log was within Data Hive, I would still be combing the streets of New Mombassa.

Managed to get Both Tubes, Naughty Naughty, Stunning, and Classic this evening as well. All I need now are the rest of the Firefight Achievements, and Déjà Vu... Help, guys. :(

Soundtrack's good stuff, by the way.

This is the first Halo game that I have played where I really like the story in it. Usually I just find myself not caring but I'm really enjoying playing this one.

:(

I should be able to get Blades of Fury later today, then I'll try to start my Legendary playthrough sometime next week. Got
Uplift Reserve
and
Coastal Highway
finished on Legendary due to the achievements but I'll play through the entire campaign in Legendary. Though it kinda sucks that you can't go back and redownload the logs in each complete playthough. Probably won't feel like a complete playthrough without them, to me at least.

Got the Vidmaster Endure today...

We played Heroic for 2 hours and got through the four rounds, but I had to go afterwards and so we had to hurry up and end it. We had over 10 lives at that point and could have kept going but I had no time :(

Well, to be fair,
we really have no idea how much time elapses during Master Chief's whole ordeal in Halo 2. I wish they would write a book version of the events in the main saga campaigns. It would make this shit easier to figure out.

I've been making my way through on legendary today, it's actually easier than other Halo games on legendary(atleast so far). I remember that skirmish well because the battle rifle just doesn't have the range to deal with Brutes and the pistol is weak against them as well so you're stuck in no mans land. Either try to pick up a needler off the ground as it's the most effective weapon on Brutes or go along the lower path. For some reason that forces the Brutes to come to you rather than staying just out of range of the BR.

Oh and like someone else said earlier, I walked right past the 2 hunters at the end, don't want any of that mess.

I finished campaign earlier with only 3 audio logs. I suck. :lol

It was pretty good though.

They're mostly annoying, but you are missing out on the weapons caches scattered throughout the map. Alteast, I think they unlock as you pick up more audio logs. Not only do you get some ammo for the pistol, but the mongoose!

That was like the coolest video I have ever seen.

I had a gunner in the back of the warthog and his kills didn't count towards me. That or he didn't kill anything.

Hmm, I think caches started unlocking for me when I was on my second run after doing missions. Though not exactly right after it but after I kill the enemies that dropped in the area right after the mission was completed I'd see the unlock indicator pop up. It's weird though they do help. The first time I unlocked the one with
sniper rifles
in it I was all like "oh hell yes" and then just ended up using the pistol anyway. :lol

But I'm just grouchy today. Firefight is a lot of fun. But there's so much more that could be done with the concept, and what's in ODST is pretty stripped down. So I'm hoping to see it more fleshed out in Reach.

My favorite part of Firefight is the bonus rounds where all the skulls are turned on and it's just complete craziness (raining grunts, dozens of grenades flying around) and you have to survive 60 seconds and hit a certain score in order to earn bonus lives. The enemies are super aggressive but you also have to be somewhat aggressive in order to reach the score in the time limit. Makes it a lot of fun and tense.

I'd like to see more stuff like that in Reach's Firefight mode - waves of timed objectives rather than a never ending thing.

Pretty interesting though part of me expected this to be a joke video, since it's so quiet. I was afraid to have my speakers turned up in fear of a goblin or scary image to appear on screen with a loud screeching. :lol

Not to mention that the name 'Windward' is in all likelihood a reference to these lines from Eliot's 'The Waste Land':

Phlebas the Phoenician, a fortnight dead,
Forgot the cry of gulls, and the deep seas swell
And the profit and loss.
A current under sea
Picked his bones in whispers. As he rose and fell
He passed the stages of his age and youth
Entering the whirlpool.
Gentile or Jew
O you who turn the wheel and look to windward,
Consider Phlebas, who was once handsome and tall as you.

Once again, Shake Appeal mentioned this some months previously:
