The Official Halo 3: ODST Thread

WHAT THE FUCK! We were on the bonus round after the fourth set and the game said their was a campaign error!

COME THE FUCK ON! GOD FUCKING DAMMIT!
Campaign error is a new one. ODST is like hell for achievements. That's what it is. Achievement hell.

love the HUD for ODST, would love something like that for Reach. It feels like Halo yet still new at the same time. Visually having HUD appear as if your looking through a visor is a plus.

Halo 3 did that, but it was a lot more subtle.

Keep the shield indicator from Halo 3 (I don't like ODST's red hud thing visually or functionally) and remove radar to increase map movement. Nerf melee lunge.
Agree on both counts. I really hate the damage and stamina indicators in ODST - a big step back from the unobtrusive clarity from the first three Halo games. I still think the current radar set up - visible if moving quickly, invisible if sneaking - is ideal. But I like not having it in campaign, so if keeping it out of campaign means it's gone from MP, I can deal. (I bailed on customs last night because I don't like playing without it.)

I'd like to see the health system go back to the Halo CE/ODST model. I say H:CE because it lacks the annoying beeping sound and the red screen. I really like the two part health dynamic, and I think it would interesting in multiplayer as well.

As for radar, they should definately keep it. Radar lets the patient people sometimes have an advantage over the massive ADD mainstream population. I use crouch all the time and sneak up on people for a kill. If radar was removed, it would completely remove the extremely small stealth element in Halo. I wouldn't mind if the radar range was shortened or didn't work on multiple floors, though.

When you got down to the last bar of health in Halo 1, you could hear your heart beat. It was a nice, subtle touch.

Just a thought, what if Reach/Halo 3 implemented a compass like ODST instead of radar. could potentially be cool, if the range is limited to like 15-20m. Radar is a double edged sword really. So much more fun and unpredictable without it though, and people don't have to rely on it so often.

Finished up the ODST campaign tonight. All in all, it was my favorite of the series. I love that it trimmed so much of the fat that clogs up the first three Halo games. Until the
tunnels
and
highway
sections, at least. Those endless identical hallways and the
interminable vehicular escape
weren't fun any time before and they aren't fun now.

I liked the idea of the hub world, but the execution was a completely missed opportunity. That part of the game should've been just as consequential as the missions themselves, or it should've been dropped altogether. A big part of the problem is that Bungie's designers fumbled their opportunity to use their imaginations to create an interesting playground. The tone/vibe of the hub is terrific and it's a nice structural idea . . . it just doesn't bear the fruit that should have. Bungie also deserves credit for making this character precisely as uninteresting as Master Chief.

I hope Reach follows up on ODST's ideas more so than Halo 3's ideas.

Eh, I don't like the old-school healthpack mechanic. The need to stop playing and hunt down revives is not fun to me. If they want a to add a sense of long-term urgency they should make shields take longer to regenerate or tweak the Halo 2/3 system of having an invisible health bar alongside the shield bar. Increase the health bar's duration or make it so you have to stop moving or shooting for about 30 seconds for it to start regenerating, all the while make the shield less durable to balance each one's importance.

As for radar, I enjoy the stealth mechanics of crouching to get off the radar think it does more harm than good because it makes camping much easier and makes the only being stealth takes forever. Without radar Halo becomes much more movement oriented and stealthy flanks and such become the strategy. If they were to implement a sprinting feature (which I think they should) it'd be cool to see people show up when they reach that speed but having to crouch slows down the gameplay too much.

You make a valid point. In order to eliminate the searching for healthpacks (which I agree would be detremental to gameplay in multiplayer), there could be both a shield bar and a health bar. The sheild bar could regenerate the same as it does now, but then the health bar could slowly regenerate over a period of minutes. That way someone who won a fight but let the enemy get away could still hunt that person down and have an advantage over him. Is this what you were tlaking about with the invisible health bar and such?

As for radar, maybe there could be a dumbed down version. Like maybe it could tell the player that someone is moving to your east, but it doesn't actually show exactly where the enemy is. Like the general direction or something.

Slower natural shield regen + faster regen with the aid of another player (support class?) would do the trick for me. They semi-solved the hunting-for-medpack problem by having dispensers throughout the city, but you still end up with checkpoint saves where you're out of ammo and have a one pixel long blinking, beeping health bar, with the next dispensers guarded by engineer protected teams of brutes, snipers and grunts. Ouch.

Whatever they do, I hope they keep the POV of ODST. Didn't notice the difference until i went back for some Halo 3 missions. Much, much better.

One other thing this did was help the sense of scale. The buildings and other elements of the environment feel much larger than they do in Halo 3 and especially Halo 2. When that cruiser pokes through the clouds during the highway mission, it looks huge. That was something Bungie had tried for but never accomplished in Halo 3, where there are massive structures all over, but they never feel that big.

The thought of Annual doesn't seem that hard after playing Deja Vu.

I just got the game and cannot believe that there's no match making. I'm guessing Bungie really wants to focus on team work in FF, but is there no option to search for a game? No one on my FL plays ODST...

Yeah it's a real pain in the you know what to get a game going. Even with the Firefight gamertags it's still hard to find people at the same time you are looking for a game.

I was helping 3 of my friends get the Endure achievement, they are all hating the guts of everyone at Bungie right now... we got kicked back to lobby during the bonus round AFTER the 4th set. They were all celebrating, they basically had the achievement, and suddenly, black screen and a collective scream of rage. Unbelievable.

edit: just saw Imperial Hot's post at the top of this page, THE EXACT SAME THING HAPPENED TO US :-O

IAWTP!!

WTF BUNGIE!!! WHY NO GODDAMN MATCHMAKING? I totally killed the co-op experience for me in Halo 3 and now its doing the same for me in ODST. Not everyone has friends who are interested in the same games. If L4D and GOW can do this for thier campaign mode why can't you lazy bastiches do it as well? This shit pisses me off so much? WHY!?!

BTW you guys my GT is Magus Cimarron so if any of you want to play firefight or campaign please friend me.

Friggin Bungie! :(

Anyone know where I can find a Ghost on Mombasa Streets, shit is so fun to ride around and listen to Jazz.

Also anything of interest near that Stonehedge looking rock thing with 2-3 engineers floating around it in a secret door room?:lol

Oh hey, I have kind of a random question.
My live account is currently not gold status so I haven't been able to play online yet.
But I have played a few rounds of Firefight solo, and it's damn fun. The best part is seeing the points appear when you shoot an enemy.

Does this happen in co-op in the campaign? (with scoring on, obviously)
It's just so gratifying to see that number pop up.

This is probably an insanely obvious question, but can I unlock things such as Hayabusa, E.V.A., and E.O.D. Armor (solo play unlocks) with only ODST? I'm very lttp with the 360 and I do not have Halo 3.

I'm pretty sure I can't, but I'm wondering if anyone knows for sure.

Nope. The only armor you can really unlock is Recon

It depends on the armor perm. Some of them can only be done by either collecting certain amount of skulls in the Halo 3 campaign or finishing certain levels.

There are many though that can be obtained through the multiplayer portion.

These should be the ones you can unlock without the campaign. E for elite, S for Spartan

(E) Ascetic Body Unlock "Up Close and Personal" Achievement
(E) Ascetic Head Unlock "Steppin' Razor" Achievement
(E) Ascetic Shoulders Unlock "Overkill" Achievement
(E) Commando Body Unlock "Triple Kill" Achievement
(E) Commando Head Unlock "Overkill" Achievement
(S) Katana Complete 49 Achievements for at least 1000 gamerscore
(S) Mark V Head Unlock "UNSC Spartan" Achievement
(S) ODST Head Unlock "Spartan Graduate" Achievement
(S) Rogue Head Unlock "Spartan Officer" Achievement
(S) Scout Body Unlock "Too Close to the Sun" Achievement
(S) Scout Head Unlock "Used Car Salesman" Achievement
(S) Scout Shoulders Unlock "Mongoose Mowdown" Achievement
(S) Security Head Earn 1000 Gamerscore points.

Yep, just turn on campaign scoring and it's essentially FireFight w/ infinite lives. Only downside is that the announcer doesn't say anything so if you get a double kill, only the medal will pop up.

Finished this yesterday and while I enjoyed it, it hasn't replaced Halo 1 as my favourite in the series.
I was a bit surprised that the flashbacks told a linear story. I was expecting that since you can trigger them in any order, they would be completely independent. As it is, you're much better off finding them in the suggested order.
I'm also now a bit confused about the overall Halo timeline. I thought Halo 3 followed straight on from Halo 2, but the ODST epilogue seems to indicate that there was at least a month between them. What was going on during this time? Also, at what point did the Covenant civil war begin? ODST has evidence of Brutes & Elites fighting much earlier than I thought it started.

Anyway, hopefully we've finally seen the end of New Mombasa. It's a nice place, but three games is enough. :D

Just noticed this, thought it was amusing. Also makes me the 10,000th reply, sorry about that :lol

I just did a solo Heroic runthrough the other day, I have to say I thought people were just being arses about the fact the game seems much easier but honestly I think that is the least trouble I've had with Heroic by myself. Did a few levels on Legendary yesterday and what would usually have been crazy hard in the other games seemed fairly normal really. It was still a bit of a challenge and I died a good few times but it was no where near the difficulty of past games.

Really enjoying playing through this again, moreso than Halo 3 as I don't have to skip certain levels . Such a great game.
